Vehicle Detail

1965 Triumph Spitfire I love the American Muscle cars from the 60's, but there is just something about the European and British cars of the late late 50's to mid 60's. They have so much style, and most of all they are just a hoot to drive. I have owned a bunch of Triumphs in the past, this is the 2nd Spitfire I have owned. These cars started around 1963 as the Mk1. The 1965 Mk2 is basically the same car looks wise, but they bumped up the horsepower to be more competitive, so you get the best of both worlds, the charm of the style and the performance. I love the rearend of these cars, the lights, the way they look, this was used up til 1970, which was the year of my last Spitfire. The lower bumper upfront of the 1965 up til 1967, to me looks the best, because it exposes the grill opening, not only for cooling but looks great in my opinion. I got this car the way you see it, a gentleman had been working on it since 2006, and he had some health issues, which made him realize that it was time to pass his pride and joy to someone else. This car he did most of the work on himself, he was a skilled gentleman that had a passion for vintage British cars. I had seen the car at our local cars and coffee, and always admired its appearance there, it just looked special to me. It does have a free and clean title, odometer reads 60872, not sure if that is correct or not, assume it has rolled over at least once. He did say that it had been sitting in a barn when he got it since the mid 1970's. The body on the car looks to be very solid, the panels all look to be pretty sound. The paint is in decent shape, I would call the quality a very nice amateur restoration back in 2006. The gentleman took a lot of time working on this car, and getting it the way he wanted it. Much time was spent under the hood detailing the engine. There are a few rock chips on the car, and small imperfections on it, see pictures. The the top is pretty rare, it is a Steal, original Hardtop, which are very hard to find, I was told they can run around $1500 depending on the condition, especially the early tops like this one. The gasket around the rear window has a split in it about an 1" long. There is some paint chips along he edge of the top were the molding connects. The paint is good on the top, but will need a little touch up on the edges. The paint on the body, is shiny and looks nice. There are a few blemishes on the hood, were the paint shrunk a little around headlight buckets. Out in the sun, you really would notice anything. Under lights in a shop, you can notice little things here and there, but overall, out at a car show, and just driving around she looks great. There are some little tiny bubbles on the passenger side, down low on the rocker, look at pictures. Other then that the rockers look in good shape. The floors looks to be solid, no weak spots that I noticed, and the frame looks to be in good shape. Overall, the paint and body look nice, a few small dings, but over a very nice looking Spitfire. I wouldn't call it a $15-18K restoration, but for a 1st generation Spitfire, she is a very nice driver, that you can drive anywhere, and enjoy at local field meets. The interior is in good shape, carpet and seats in in great shape, door panels look nice. The dash bad is in good shape as well, and steering wheel. All the gauges are working in the car, tach, speedometer, temp etc. The headlight switch is not work, and the windshield wipers are not working. So this will have to be sorted out in the future. Overall the interior looks very nice for a driver, no show condition, but it is clean and pleasant. The engine runs great, it starts right up, and has a nice sound. No valve clatter, sounds great and smooth. The dual SU carbs have just been rebuilt and gone through, cost around $1000 to get them all working good and rebuilt. The engine has a few small oil leaks around the oil pan, and will leave a few drips on the ground when parked, I have not tried to snug the bolts up as of yet, that may be all it needs. It is drivable as is, this will be something you will want to look into later in the future. I did notice a little trail coming from the seal on the distributer gasket, so it may be this that is leaking and running around the pan gasket. Overall it does not bother me to bad, just something to tinker with in the future the way I looked at it. Underneath the hood is very clean. The brakes work great, they have all be redone as well. The transmission works great in all the gears, shifts nicely, no clucks or popping out of gear when you are out really driving it. 1st gear is a little whiny, but nothing that I am worried about, just the way it is. For the most part, it is a great little running car, probably one of the better running Triumphs I have owned. As I mentioned earlier, the headlights are not working, they are all hooked up, but believe it may be the switch, really that is what it has to be. Overall, a great little car, that can use a little tinkering here and there to get it all dialed in more, but hope in and drive it, and enjoy it right now. The tires are new as well, and in great shape. Please read the auction, look at the pictures, give me a call or text me, would be glad to help you with questions before you bid.
