Vehicle Detail

1962 Ragtop Beetle: A Great Driver Car Imported from Germany This 1962 Beetle was originally a European Model, owned by a German in Germany itself. In 1995, it was brought across the Atlantic by a guy in the military to the US. The original color is Ruby Red, but the guy who brought it over had it painted black sometime in the 90's. The paint looks decent, and will polish up nicely, but it does show some signs of age, so a new paint job isn't needed, unless you wanted to make it into a show car or something. The main goal with this Beetle was to get it running and driving so it could simply be enjoyed. When I got it, the previous owner had a "buddy" install a crate engine and the "buddy" locked it up by setting up everything incorrectly. That has all been gutted and sorted out with a fresh 1776cc rebuilt engine, with 110 Cam, twin Kadron A.J. Simms modified (with matching A.J. Simms distributor with the matching curve), Bug Pack Header Exhaust with Fat Boy Muffler, Melling heavy duty oil pump, and as many German parts as could be found. The old accelerator pedal assembly was broken and tiny, so a brand new rebuilt pedal assembly was installed; complete with "big foot conversion" for larger feet, and a heavy duty caged roller pedal. This Beetle starts up easily, and once the carbs are warmed up, is very crisp, responsive, and fun to cruise around. A 1776cc was chosen for its high performance power, but fuel miser characteristics. With the sunroof open, this Beetle is a blast to drive and take in the summer sun. The same amount of time, care, and proper set-up that would go into a 62 356 went into this Beetle. All accessories seen in the pictures are included: Original Flat-4 Roof Rack, NOS Perohaus Turn Signals, Grundig Radio, Blaupunkt Face Plate, VW Crash Radio Knobs with VW Logos, old school original ignition/steering lock, old school original under dash package tray, choice of wheels (stock skinny/deep wide 5's OR 17" Escras), Original Flat-4 Banjo Steering Wheel with Flying Lady Horn button & Adapter, White-knob Lighter (though the Beetle isn't a smoker's car), OG Bosch "Black Tip" antenna with logo base, incredible Period German Beetle Accessory Visor from the 60's (Looks Yellowish/green from top, but Red looking from bottom), We just wanted to give options to suit different tastes. The bumpers can be either euro blades with guards, or complete American Bumpers with guards and over riders. This Beetle is a German vehicle, brought over to the USA by a military personnel individual who owned and operated it while in Germany. Because of this, German Export papers and German plate are included in auction. The interior has been completely replaced using original VW parts and Wolfsburg West parts such as new seats (complete frame/pad/covers), new rubber mats, square weave carpets, decent felt headliner, working ragtop with Golde handle, and all of the little bits and pieces that are so hard to find. There is a package storage unit installed behind the back seat, I believe it is a WW Unit. The suspension and brakes have all been sorted out and replaced/adjusted such as all new brakes, adjustable front end, new shocks, rebuilt steering box, etc. The king & links are in good shape, so those were simply cleaned, greased, and adjusted with shims to within VW factory spec.European Bosch Fluted Headlights (one globe, one converted to H4), Authentic EMPI Licence plate frame, Repro "D" Sign & NOS mounting bracket, lots of extra parts like original peanut turn signals, NEW chrome for vent posts (not yet installed), nice spare, all on-board tools (jack, pry-bar, etc.), the "Idiot's Guide", and a lot I will update later. 4 way flasher conversion, 12V conversion, modern tires, and many other niceties have been installed on this Beetle to make it more comfortable on today's highways. There is a make-up case from the 60's that is full of additional parts, as well as the front trunk area. 1962 Authentic Maryland Plates are both included; front and back. This is a running, driving car with everything working except the radio. There is a radio plate in the glove box, but the original Grundig head unit isn't hooked up. The face plate is Blaupunkt, and the knobs appear to be "VW" crash knobs with logos. Many parts included are specific to 1962 (under seat cards, for example). The engine starts up and runs like a champ. The rust is minimal, but there are solid floors and solid heater channels. Any rust repair is minor, and appears on fenders, 1/4 panel, and so on. The front a rear aprons appear to have been replaced (maybe back in the 90's) and are bubbling in spots (not from rust, but from poor paint adhesion). There is some rust corrosion under one headlight, on one tail light housing, etc. See pics. The heaters/floors are very dry and solid. It looks like the stuff that needs addressing is easy to get to (the top side), ie. fender, tail light surround, and a few spots here and there. This is a nice driving car for fun on weekends and can be driven as-is, or given a fresh paint job (with some minor bodywork) and taken around to local shows. Please message me with any questions, as I am sure I am forgetting to put something in here. The title is clear.Buyer must arrange his/her own shipping. A down-payment could be paid through Pay-Pal, but the remaining balance must come via wire transfer (third party monitored). No personal or cashier's checks. On Jul-18-13 at 14:45:45 PDT, seller added the following information: For those of you who know how much time, effort, and money goes into actually getting a classic VW on the road, you will appreciate this Road-ready Ragtop Beetle. All of the parts have been pain-stakingly sourced from Europe, and high quality VW shops around the country. The car is photographed as it truly is, with no washing, buffing, or cleaning to try and hide anything. This is a solid driving Classic VW Beetle Ragtop with a lot of German NOS, Original, and super rare goodies being offered at a realistic price! On Jul-18-13 at 14:49:12 PDT, seller added the following information: Many folks are asking if this is a real ragtop from the factory, or a clip that has been welded on. THIS IS A REAL RAGTOP THAT CAME FROM THE FACTORY IN 1962 WITH SUNROOF BODY. Not a graft job or welded on sunroof mechanism. On Jul-19-13 at 12:15:36 PDT, seller added the following information: Forgot to mention Original Robri Aluminum fender guards and running board step.On Jul-21-13 at 07:29:06 PDT, seller added the following information: Fielding more questions: (1) The engine is a 1776cc, which is NOT stock. The original motor was a 1200cc 40hp unit that barely moved the car. This engine is a 1776cc 90-100hp unit that really keeps up with modern day traffic. (2) The engine was done correctly, with all of the high performance parts selected for quality over price. Everything has been set up by professionals, and the driveability is a testimonial to this fact.(3) I would upgrade the brakes to front disks if you are a very fast driver. If you simply tool around and drive with plenty of common sense, you will have no problems. This is a twin carbureted high output engine that will get someone in trouble fast if they are not experienced with rear engined cars with lots of power (such as Porsche 911, 930, 356, 912, and hi performance VWs).(4) The paint looks great from a distance, and polishes up nicely, but as stated in the ad, it was done in the 90's and is showing signs of age (some refer to this as Character Flaws). It ads character to the car, and allows the driver to drive the car without constantly worrying about someone hitting it, scratching it, etc. This is called a "good driver" in the classic car world. A "show car" is one with perfect paint, but anyone with a show car will tell you that they wish they had a driver; as the show cars are so perfect they can rarely be enjoyed, driven, and parked anywhere outside of a protective garage.(5) The photographs are HIGH RESOLUTION pictures. This is done intentionally so the buyer can zoom in on every aspect of the car to examine the body flaws closely...please use this feature, and ask plenty of questions before buying. I have done my best to give a true representation of this beautiful DRIVER. Ask anyone in the classic Porsche/VW community, and simply getting a running/driving VW is a feat in and of itself and carries much value. To "fix up" a derelict VW will cost 25k and upwards in today's market. On Jul-21-13 at 07:36:17 PDT, seller added the following information: A few folks have commented on the dust on the floor mats, spider webs under fender, and dust on the body. I felt that NOT cleaning the car was the best way to properly represent the true condition of the car. I could have easily run a buffer over the paint, armor alled the tires, seals, and rubber mats, and polished all of the aluminum; but i feel like that would be hiding things and generally putting forth a "doctored version" of the car. This is an honest representation of a Beetle that will clean up nicely. When it sells, I will wipe it down and put some wax on it if the buyer wishes. Most folks have their own way of detailing a car, so that is often left alone. Plus, some people simply enjoy polishing a classic car, bringing it back to life themselves. On Jul-21-13 at 07:43:50 PDT, seller added the following information: Regarding the WHEELS; the buyer needs to specify which wheels he/she would like on the car. The 17" Escras look great to some, but too flashy to others. The 15" Steel Smoothies with hubcaps are what originally came on the car; HOWEVER, the rear wheels have been professionally modified to be much WIDER. This is to provide more traction, and also to fill out the rear fenders and give the car an aggressive stance. The 17" Escras look cool, but require more turns to back into a parking space, and will rub if you turn the wheel too far one way or the other. Custom car guys and gals are used to this driving style, the inexperienced may not like it. The 15" Wheels have absolutely no clearance issues whatsoever, so if you want the Classic/Stock look with no driving issues, then go with the 15" Smoothies. The choice is the buyers. Just as I give a choice in bumper styles. BOTH sets of wheels are not included in auction; you must choose one set. We can negotiate a price if you want both sets of wheels.Same goes for bumpers. I just thought it would be cool to give the buyer some options. On Jul-21-13 at 07:46:06 PDT, seller added the following information: There are minor dents on a fender or two. Again, this is a character car, and a good driver. It's all about getting in, throwing the sunroof back, and cruising....On Jul-22-13 at 14:17:07 PDT, seller added the following information: I am getting questions about the license plate frame. It is NOT a reproduction, but IS a genuine original EMPI with the California stamp on back, and the two piece frame and Globe (aka Globe Frame). The speed nuts and posts are missing, so the globe appears to be siliconed on for easy removal, but it is REAL. These frames are wildly expensive to some folks. I just think it makes the bug look cool and is a genuine piece of history just as all of the other accessories. Repros are fine, but if you can get the originals it is that much sweeter to collect on your ride. All accessories on this Beetle are originals. Look up the Perohaus turn signals and you will see what I mean.
