Up for auction is my 1981 BMW. I call it a modified BMW because the fairing has been removed and the instrument panel reconfigured. Also an aftermarket windshield added. The original fairing had brake fluid leaking on it and the fiberglass delaminated along with the paint. This is a very presentable motorcycle and shows very well. It runs great and burns no oil. It will leak a small amount of oil,about two or three drops from the left head when on the side stand. All of the controls work as originally designed and the wiring has been upgraded to accommodate the towing of a trailer. The trans shifts smoothly with no unusual noises or vibrations. I have the correct grease for the engine to trans spline and perform this maintenance every two years. I just took a compression test on the motor and it shows the left cylinder has 140 pounds of pressure and the right has 138 pounds. The cylinders are Galnikal plated and never wear. The battery is three years old and is a top of the line Glass Mat sealed type. The tires are new Avon's with little wear and are the correct size. These air heads are good for over 150,000 miles with the correct maintenance. The bike comes with a clean Illinois title,in my name. There is no title for the trailer. I painted this bike with DuPont two part paint with four coats of clear, each one polished. The striping is tape but its under the clear coats so it will never lift.The only section of the bike that has body work is on the tank and it was done correctly. The paint is three years old. No nicks , blemishes or rust any where. I mentioned towing a trailer, there is one included with the bike. This is a unit that I built that is ideal for this bike and it pulls straight with no wondering side to side. I have only used it for short runs less than 150 miles one way with my club. The only thing about the trailer is you have to keep in mind that there is a load pushing you and stopping takes extra time and distance. It's wired into the bike with running lights, turn signals,and stop lights. All are LED's so there is no significant drain on the battery. What does the bike need:The windshield needs to be replaced as a stone hit it a a crack developed. Its down low on the right side.The push rod tubes need new seals, they leak a trace of oil onto the lower engine housing. Not critical.The left side muffler has a patch welded on, was like that when I got the bike, highlighted in a photo.This bike draws a lot of attention and is trouble free if one performs the maintenance as required. The only reason I'm selling is: I have 11 motorcycles and at age 71 its a bit much to keep up with. Also this is a big heavy bike and I'm not strong enough to control it when moving around with the motor off. Need to thin out the herd to a more manageable number. Also included with the sale is the original owners manual, a Haynes manual, down loads from the Guru of BMW airheads and a manual on towing with a motorcycle.
