Vehicle Detail

Here’s one of those cars that most of us dream about... Finding a low mileage Convertible in a desirable color combination, with longtime ownership history, documentation saved over the years since new, running and driving like a new VW did back in 1964 right off the showroom floor and best of all – unrestored. If that catches your attention, please read on further. This stunning Bahama Blue (color code L-519) 1964 VW Cabriolet was in the hands of just 2 owners for 49 years and lived a pampered life. It was lovingly cared for since new and was considered a member of the family. It has 80,908 original miles on the odometer, and still has the original drivetrain.Chassis # 62655515Body # 6693Engine # 557 655Bought new on July 20, 1964 by Dr Edward Mohns at Thrift Motors Inc. in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Dr Mohns was living in Texas at the time and the car was driven home to Dallas TX which is where the car would spend the next 8 years. Lyle Ozman Motors in Dallas would perform all of the service on the car during this time. This can be tracked through the original Service Booklet. In 1972 Dr Mohns moved to Otis, Oregon and retired here. His beloved 1964 beetle was no longer needed as daily transportation and became a “Sunday driver”. When not out for a leisurely drive the VW was tucked away in the garage under a car cover. Dr Mohns passed away in 1997 and the Volkswagen was sold to the Hauxwells. The Hauxwells were longtime friends of the Mohns and Dr Mohns went over his criteria for becoming the caretaker of his VW. He wanted to make sure that it would be stored properly and maintained, as Dr Mohns was very proud of the fact that his bug had well under 100K original miles, and still wore the original top. He knew he had something special. The VW saw very little use under the Hauxwells ownership, they fulfilled their commitment to the Dr Mohns and were very good caretakers until 2013 when they decided to sell the car to me. To highlight a few of the unique items about this bug:100% rust free, flawless original floor pans that have never been repaired and perfect convertible support rails. Car was always garaged and never left out in the elements. Because of this the door alignment is perfect and they have that nice “clunk” when you shut them. The battery tray is also rock solid and original. No rust! I was told this car never spent a night outside. Obviously impossible to prove but as you’ll see, it’s a viable story. One repaint done years ago in the original color. Still shows well.Still wears the original top and top boot cover in dark green. This is the 100% factory correct color combination for an L-519 car. Original top is in excellent shape. The top frame folds up and down beautifully, alignment is perfect where it meets the windshield, just as you would expect from a car that has never been apart. It had one very small tear where it looks like the top got pinched (approx. 1” long) this has been professionally repaired. See detailed picts for a close up. Original cloth headliner has some tears and staining. These are the nicest original door panels I’ve seen in a beetle of this age let alone a convertible. Rear seat looks like it’s never been sat in, front seats are absolutely perfect. The original owner put plastic covers over the front seats when the car was new, those plastic covers were removed in 1997. The seat material is a very attractive corduroy pattern blue / green pinstripe with some subtle highlight pinstripes in orange. Some people I’ve talked to refer to this seat material as an early 1964 offering only. Very unique and rare to see this and personally my favorite stand-out feature on this car. Carpeting and rubber floors mats are original. There’s some excessive carpet wear on the driver’s side front well where Dr Mohns Yorkshire terrier got carried away and decided to use the carpeting as a scratching post. The original owner called it an anxiety attack and it was scratching at the door opening to get out (like a dog scratching at a back door sill that wants to go outside to relive it’s bladder). That was the first and last time the Yorkie got to ride in the bug. True story that I felt was worth sharing.(5) Original date coded wheels with original beauty trim rings, correct for a Cabriolet of this vintage, original to the car, and all 4 hubcaps are also original to the car (verified by the family that these are the hubcaps the car had when new) with proper L-519 logos.Still has the original Continental Spare tire in the proper 1” whitewall. The 4 tires on the car are new Firestone bias ply 5.60-15 with 1” whitewalls that have 0 miles on them. These tires were carefully selected so they would match the spare and give the car the proper stance and appearance that it had when it rolled off the assembly line in 1964. It looks like its right out of the factory VW brochure.Complete tool roll in blue vinyl (which is factory correct for a bahama blue beetle) spare fan belt that has been with the car since day 1.Correct Bahama blue running board mats. This color is not available in a reproduction. This pair has aged gracefully with the car and they look amazing on this survivor beetle.Original sticker on the header bow for how to care for the convertible top. Have never seen another.Original battery maintenance instructions on the top of the battery lid. Have never seen another.Original factory inspection markings done in a white stencil on the fan shroud. I have seen these before but only on unrestored cars.Original short 6V Bosch coil with the proper sticker still attached.Fitted at the dealership with front and rear seat belts. Installed per VW manual and done right without any extra holes being drilled in the chassis. It’s hard to describe how nice this car runs and drives. The electric choke setups up effortlessly when cold, the engine starts immediately, and the idle comes down flawlessly as the choke comes off, engine runs perfect. It just benefited from a valve adjustment, oil change, tune up, carburetor rebuild, and full fuel system cleaning from the tank back. This was done to ensure reliability as the car had sat in storage for many years. The spark plug wires are original to the car, I was tempted to replace them but it runs too nice to justify changing out parts when it’s unnecessary. The brake system was recently inspected and gone through as needed; the front soft lines were replaced as they will still the originals from 1964. It also got new front wheel cylinders and front shoes. The car stops well and all brakes are properly adjusted and bled. The convertible drip tray that sits below the deck lid has all the proper bits including the original to the car black rubber drain tubes, and anti-rattle rubber buffers that sandwich between the drain tray and deck lid. Have never seen these on a restored convertible that’s been disassembled and put back together. Another minute detail that sets this car apart from the crowd. All electrical contacts were cleaned one by one down to the fuse panel. Everything on the car works (including the horn, gas gauge, dash lights, even the radio works, etc.). It’s still the original 6V system and has a brand new battery. The interior dome light is finicky, it comes on about ½ the time. The wiring in this car has never been altered, it’s all factory OEM front to back.It has the original black cardboard wiring cover and front trunk liner still intact and in very good condition. All original date coded glass including the original windshield with proper logos. Also has a period correct AAA sticker on the front windshield along with the rear bumper. These were put on when the car was new and are still with it today. They have that great patina to them and add character to overall look and feel of the car. I also have the corresponding AAA paperwork and vinyl sleeve that was kept in the glove box.I have the original owner’s manual, convertible color brochure, radio warranty card, blue vinyl VW sleeve that would have been kept in the glove box, old registrations that track mileage going back several decades, old insurance cards, there’s a lot of provenance included. Please keep in mind that his beautiful VW is unrestored and has 81K miles worth of wear and tear. Even though it will pick up a trophy at every car show you take it to, best original and otherwise, it has rock chips, scratches in paint, glass, chrome, dings in hubcaps, dings in the body, and many flaws like any used vehicle of this age. Please view gallery pictures as I will include as much detail in the pictures as possible. I want to set the expectation up front that it’s not a nut and bolt restored car and is not perfect. Included with the sale are the original issue Oregon plates when the car came to Oregon in 1972. Not the 1964 plate or frame that is shown in the pictures. Over 100 pictures can be found here:https://picasaweb.google.com/dustin.howell/UnrestoredBahamaBlue64Convertible#I’m happy to sell the car worldwide and will gladly assist in shipping arrangements.
