Vehicle Detail
Offered for auction is a 1949 Packard Club Sedan six passenger TWO DOOR Straight Eight, also known as a 23rd Series car. Introduced in May of ‘49 with a serial number #23653364. It came with an Inline L-head Cast iron block with a Displacement of 288 cu. in. (The engine compartment contents are all there) As I have noted, this model is the TWO DOOR, and as such, is far less common than the four door of that same vintage. And the natural flowing lines of this design are amplified with this configuration. If you take note of the completed listings, all of the recent Ebay offerings are either the four door or one of the very rare and expensive convertibles or limos. For the era, this car compares as a Lead Sled or with the new clean sided cars of its time. Mercuries of this vintage have become such interesting and ubiquitous hot rods. Only the Packards and Hudsons of those few years offer the same sleek and powerful low rider looks. This two door Packard would make a great alternative rod to a ‘49 Mercury or 49-51 Shoe Box Ford. And for the restorer, this car is also well within the grasp of a reasonable and cost effective restoration. The Pluses: * The car is nearly complete. I may miss noting the absence of a few parts, but they will be small ones. Notably missing are the right side stainless stripe pieces. * The car was primed and does not have many layers of paint, as most of this age do. The stock black is (barely) present under and around the red oxide primer and rust you might see on the surface of the car is just that, a thin layer of easily removable surface rust. * have been told by the previous owner of the car that it ran when he parked it, albeit while using some oil. I have not tried to turn it over or start it. * It is a Montana car, for at least the past 40 years. As such, much of the corrosion and rust issues of other regional cars is not there. * The windshield and rear curved glass are there and in pretty good shape. Some of the flat glass may need replacing, but then that is no problem. * The grille and front bumper easily pass as drivers. While they are not concourse, they are very nice from 5 feet. * There is a clear title in my hot little hand. The frame, rocker panels and underbelly appear to be very solid and there is no fender or quarter rot. The car looks to have never been wrecked or substantively repaired. There is no visible bondo or other filler anywhere. The cranks and handles inside and out are all here. The Negatives: * There is isolated rust. . The car is not a rust bucket by any means, in fact is one of the cleaner unrestored Packards or other cars of that vintage I have seen. However, that said, there is a patch of rust in both front floor pans, mostly along the outer edge and not across the entire floor areas. Likewise, there are thin and rusty parts in the middle of the trunk. Both areas seem to be isolated to the flat parts and are not endemic to the car in general. * There are a couple of the flat glass windows which are cracked - easily replaceable just about anywhere. * There are a number of minor dents, the left rear quarter has a vertical crease; the right rear above the taillight has a dent; there are a couple dings on the rockers and there are a couple dents around the driver door, which does not align or latch well when closed. * The interior is largely complete, and nearly all the patterns are there, but the seats are totally shot. Some of the nobs on the dash are crumbly and the steering wheel is broken in places. * It needs all the standard attention any unrestored 64-year old car would likely need. Yes, this car has its bumps and dings, but overall it is a very complete and well-preserved time capsule. This is an awesome project car that would make a statement in any rod run or a very nice and distinctive car at a vintage rally. ********** Please look at the pictures and let me know if you need more. I would be happy to respond to individual issues and questions. This is an actual AUCTION. I do have a very low reserve on the vehicle, but it is half what one might expect for this model in this condition. Bid to win! Buyer is responsible for transportation of the car from my doorstep, but I will assist in any way I can. A deposit of $500 is expected within 24 hours of the end of the auction via PayPal unless arranged otherwise in advance. The entire balance is due with PayPal, cash or bank wire within 14 days of the end of the auction. The vehicle does not leave until funds are cleared and personal and cashier’s checks are not OK. You MAY leave the car, once paid for, here until July 8, 2013, giving you an opportunity to come get the car as part of a vacation to MONTANA. See Glacier Park, just 85 miles away (and leave the trailer here for when you are ready to load up and go home), tour through Yellowstone coming or going; visit the Lewis and Clark Trail or float the most scenic parts of the Upper Missouri River. Come, Play, and take a new project away when you head home. Please look at my many years of 100% POSITIVE FEEDBACK and BID WITH CONFIDENCE. I have bought several cars and hundreds of car parts on Ebay over the years and will certainly try to treat you the way I'd like to be treated I can be reached at 406 4 six 6 two 644.
