Vehicle Detail
You are looking at the PlugBug - a car that gets me more positive comments than any other car I have driven! First, this is a fully restored, completely rust free 1974 Beetle in perfect shape. It is an Electric Conversion - a 96 volt Wilderness EV kit with Curtis on-road controller and custom battery trays. Look at the pictures, it is a very clean, professional conversion. All of this is installed in a super-solid Beetle that was fully disassembled, sanded and repainted in 2008. The paint job is very thorough and the car looks GREAT. Interior is fully redone, new headliner, carpets and panels. Don't know what the front seats came out of, they are on custom brackets, but they look and feel comfortable and sporty. All electrics work, are powered by a 12 volt battery in it's proper location. It has been enjoyed regularly (but never in the winter). As much as I have THOROUGHLY enjoyed owning and using The PlugBug , I can no longer stand to see it sitting in a corner undercover for 5 months out of the year (due to my living in Boston). It has been completely reliable for me and I will miss having it around but the PlugBug would much prefer to live in a climate that would allow year- round usage to maximize its practicality. This car is FUN. And your gas bill (or lack thereof) will make you smile ;-) No tailpipes and their associated noise and pollution either! Range on a full (overnight) charge is 40 - 50 miles if easy on the throttle , I have always had enough juice to get me home. Now the nuts-and-bolts . Wilderness EV kit neatly, cleanly installed . (12) 8 volt Interstate Golf Cart batteries mounted securely in custom trays. Batteries were new Jun '08, always kept full , should be good for 2 more years w/ 2-300 cycles per year. Charger is basic, check attached meter to determine needed charge, turn dial for 1 -12 hours , SET IT AND FORGET IT ! Electric motor is directly connected to the transaxle, no clutch necessary. Basically, you do NOT have to shift it at all, except to put it in reverse. Just leave it in 3rd gear to drive. Transmission is a Mofoco HD rebuild w/ approx 500 miles on it, reverse popped on the original from the torque this thing puts out . The car drives like a Beetle should and carries the weight of those batteries very well. Brakes / suspension / steering etc were redone as well when the car was restored. I recently had it checked out, and it needs new ball joints. I will have these replaced professionally before shipping the car. All 4 tires have less than 3000 miles on them. Check out the pictures - this car is amazing and easy to drive. I will either give you a short tutorial (if you are picking up the car) or record one for you if needed. You can see the video of the car driving below. 1974 Electric VW Beetle — This car is a real head turner.
