Vehicle Detail

1964 VOLKSWAGEN 21 WINDOW SAFARI BUS/TRUE BARN FIND This bus was purchased in 1999 by my girlfriend's dad in Washington State. He ordered some parts for it, tinkered with it, got it running, and then parked it in his barn. He was told by the seller that the miles are real but there is no proof. I own and operate a small classic car restoration shop in Florida and purchased it a couple of months ago with the intention of restoring it. I had it shipped to my shop and after about a half hour of tinkering, got it running well enough to drive around the block. It is running on a 5 gallon gas can as I do not want to put gas in the tank without flushing it out first. The bus runs, shifts and stops. It has plenty of power as the motor is upgraded. A bit of research says the motor is a 1600 but I wouldn't swear to it. My shop specializes in classic American Muscle Cars and I have decided that I really don't want to shift my focus to the restoration of a foreign vehicle for myself. There is some rust on the truck but it is not bad at all and patch panels are available from a number of sources. There is a hole in the right front floorboard, a couple of holes in the cargo floor, the rockers should be changed (not a difficult or expensive job) and there are a couple of small patches needed around two of the window frames. The front (nose) panel is slightly dented but could be easily fixed and is not rusted. The bus has the drivers seat and one of the rear seats (seat back needs new upholstery). You will have to find a passenger seat and the other rear bench seat (there should be two rear bench seats). There are no soft interior panels included. All the glass is present, along with new weatherstripping. The trim, headlights, turn signals, etc are present. The sunroof canvas and bows are with the truck but you will probably want a new canvas (not torn, just a little weathered looking). I am, by no means, an authority on German engineering but, if you have any questions, I will answer them to the best of my ability. If you REALLY want, we can do the body and paint work for you at a reduced hourly rate that could be discussed. I would suggest media blasting the body and parts, replacing some panels (you can supply them or I can probably provide a wholesale price), patching some small holes with new metal (sorry, I won't use bondo or filler except for a final skim coat) and priming/painting. I would prefer not to do the final reassembly as that should be done by a guy that is knowledgeable in VW buses. I would prefer that you arrange your own shipping but we can assist if needed. At the very least, we will be available to assist with and document the loading. The bus comes with a clear Washington State title. On Nov-25-12 at 21:39:41 PST, seller added the following information: Might be willing to trade!!! What have you got??? Nothing that I have to feed please!!! On Nov-26-12 at 06:31:21 PST, seller added the following information: Ebay has advised me that it is a violation of their policy for me to seek a trade so, no trades. Sorry On Nov-27-12 at 21:37:52 PST, seller added the following information: The chassis/VIN number is clearly stamped on the pan to the right of the motor. The chassis/VIN number is 1188356 After several people have asked, I have determined that there is no M tag. It must have been removed with the passenger seat. I have been assured that you can send 50 Euros, along with the chassis/VIN number to the VW museum and receive documentation from them that duplicates the information of the M tag.
