Vehicle Detail
Absolutely Unique EV-1958 Goggomobil: offered again with a lower Reserve Price! This is one of the few surviving Goggomobils which were exported to the United States in the late ‘50’s and early ‘60’s. . These were special export versions, with the 400 cc engine, an automatic gasoline-oil mixer, and 7 inch sealed headlights as required by US regulations I have no idea when this auction took place, or what the final bid was on the only other Goggomobil sedan that I could find information on: http://jalopnik.com/goggomobil/ Modern Motor magazine, in its December 1958 road test, concluded, "A combination of several factors gives the Goggo its amazing maneuverability in local traffic - its tiny size, tight turning circle afforded by small wheels and more direct steering ratio, snappy gearbox and nippy acceleration. The initial success inspired Buckle to produce a coupe version of the Goggo with a more fashionable body. It had a larger rear window and steel doors, and a more powerful 400cc, 15kW engine. Top speed was 101kmh and the price increased to $1440.” This car was originally converted from gas to electric in the early '80's using a 400 amp aircraft starter/generator, six 6 volt batteries, and a series of sequential contactors. Through the years I have done a lot of reconfiguring. Current configuration is ADC motor, 48 volt AGM pack, (with a spare pack waiting) Alltrax 650 amp controller, Lestronics II 25 amp charger, and Newmar 48v-12v DC/DC. With a Lithium battery pack to reduce the weight, this little EV would really scoot! I really don't want to sell this absolutely unique EV-it is the most positive attention getting EV that I have owned=it makes people laugh or smile when they see it! But, I am not driving it, and we have too many other vehicles all requiring license, registration and insurance. I would like to see it go to someone who will show it off and bring that joyful smile to people’s faces. I do not know what the real usable range or speed is now, as the speedometer is not currently working, and I haven’t needed to drive it over 10 miles in recent years, as that is my round trip drive to work. I did have it up to 50 mph in the past with a different battery pack, when I was driving it regularly. There is an original shop manual that comes with the car, (which has been essential for me to be able to keep it operating) and I will include a detailed description of operating and maintenance procedures. I also have what amounts to a pick up load of spare Goggomobil parts, including spares for just about everything, (including a lot of internal combustion engine parts that it hasn’t needed for over 30 years…) tires, wheels, an original back seat, 2 doors complete with windows and hardware, brakes, axles, electrical, and on and on. These will go with the car at no extra charge if the buyer picks it up. There is a very good market for these parts. These are all of the defects and quirks of this EV that I am aware of:The windshield and doors need weather stripping. All other glass has new weather stripping. There is a small triangular tear in the drivers seat—this is visible in the photo of the interior. The cog belt drive system is noisy—it always has been, and I haven’t been able to change it. I have considered changing out the entire drive system, bypassing the transaxle/shifting mechanism for something that was designed for electric propulsion, but it seemed like too much work to replace something that was working.None of the gauges have been fully connected since the last major refitting of the car, which included painting and replacing the clutch. All of them did work before, but I ran out of time and energy at the end of the job, just as I was starting a new time intensive job. I haven’t needed them since for the driving I was doing with the Goggo. E-MAIL ME WITH ANY QUESTIONS This vehicle is sold As-Is, Where-Is. Pick up and delivery are the Buyer’s responsibility.
