Vehicle Detail
In 1961 the MG car company released what would be the last variation on the revolutionary MGA. The MGA MkII benefited from a larger motor and front disc brakes, as well as subtle styling changes such as a redesigned vinyl-covered dashboard, a new inset front grille, and different tail-lights. While the original MGA produced 68 Brake Horsepower, the redesigned Mk IIs were significantly more powerful and produced 93 BHP from the factory. These changes, in addition to the front disc-brakes created a much more drivable car, capable of traveling well in excess of 100mph, and stopping safely and reliably. Although the MGA MkIIs were a significant improvement to the MGA production line, they were the end of an era as Abingdon quickly transitioned to MGB production in 1962. While over 100,000 MGA’s were made, only 8198 of those were MkII roadsters. It is easy to see that only a small fraction of those eight thousand cars exist today in their original configuration. This car is best described as a well-sorted driver-quality car. The car benefited from a full restoration just over 15 years ago by the previous owner. He had the 1622cc engine shipped to England to be rebuilt and shipped back. The car has less than 500 miles on it since the rebuild. The previous owner was a sculptor and got his enjoyment out of restoring the car, and not driving it, which is how we came to acquire it. Since the restoration is an older one, the car shows some patina. We have taken care to tune the car up and replace the battery. Nothing needs to be done to this car to enjoy it on a regular basis. The interior is high-quality red leather and really sets off the white paint. The paint itself is showing its age in places, and although it presents itself very nicely, is not a concourse level paint job. Of all the MGA MkIIs that were built, the most desirable were those that sported wire wheels. This chrome wire-wheeled MGA MkII is a beautiful example of the MG Car Company’s last and best shot at what became their most iconic sportscar. All the weather equipment on this car is like new (the sidescreens still have the paper on them). All in all, this is a tremendous opportunity to acquire a gorgeous and functional classic car that, due to its low production numbers, is sure to continue to appreciate in the coming years.
