Vehicle Detail
1939 Chevrolet Master 85 Coach Slant Back Street Rod Rare Classic (less than 1500 built), customer steel body, with air conditioning Questions? Concerns? Want to see 172 photos? Contact Chad! (330-353-1750) Often, when you see a custom built street rod for sale, it is a vehicle that is rarely driven. Sure, maybe the owners drive it in and out of its trailer, or down the street at car shows, but it’s not often they are taken out on the open road. Most of these cars are never tweaked and never have a chance to work out the “bugs”. You won’t have that problem with this Chevy. She was designed to be driven and enjoyed. Once you seat yourself in those plush leather seats, crank up that premium stereo, adjust the tilt wheel, and turn on the Vintage A/C (or heat), you’re ready for a road trip! Sure, she has a moderate size 305 engine, but that just means she isn’t as thirsty as some of those other cars. Let’s go! Equipment: · 305 GM V8 (out of an ’82 Camaro – per seller) · Eldebrock performer carb and manifold · 350 GM transmission · Vintage A/C and heat · Chassis engineering front and rear suspension · Flaming River rack steering · Leather seating area · Genuine Boyd Coddington wheels · Power windows · Reclining manual seats · Frenched headlamps · Lokar shifter · Lecarro steering wheel · VDO gauges · American wire harness · Pioneer AM/FM, CD, MP3, WMA/iPod · The title show “exempt” in the odometer section [ Paint ] – This Chevy was completely built and finish painted 8-10 years ago. The paint is smooth, shiny, and looks like a good production repaint. It appears to match correctly all the way around. The owner has put about 10,000 miles on it since it was painted, so it is very road proven, but it has picked up a few nicks on the front. There are a couple nicks with a slight dent on the front nose of hood, a couple on the front of the fenders, and a couple larger, brush-touched nicks on top of the left fender. The nose below the grill is actually a fiberglass insert and also has a few light nicks. See close up photos. The top and rear are mostly nick free, and if there are any fine scratches they are almost undetectable (as the car is such a light color). There is a little touched-up area on the back edge of the passenger door, and 2-3 little nicks on the running board. Upon close inspection, you can see a couple of small blisters in the paint on the body line below the rear window. There are also a couple of light cracks in the paint (see pics). Overall, even though this car was designed to be driven and enjoyed, it shows very little exterior wear. [ Body ] – In general, the body looks nice and straight…not “laser straight”, but very nice for an older steel body. The fits on the doors look correct for that era. Both doors shut well and feel solid. The gap between the hood and cowl, as well as the gaps around the air intake, are fairly consistent. Being extremely critical, the gap between the chrome piece and the right, front side of the hood is a little bit larger, but it could have always been that way. The fits on the rear fenders also look consistent, except for a larger gap on the right fender where the beading places through. The car has a smooth flowing back, but no trunk. We do not see any obvious dents on the body, or any fresh damage. Chad went over the car and tested different panels with magnets. He confirmed that everything except the running boards and the piece below the front grill are all metal. It is our assumption that in order to make this Chevy as straight as it is, that a skim coat was probably used. The seller did tell us about some repairs that were made to the body prior to the paint. He said there was some repair work on the cowl, the lower edge of the quarters, and the fenders. The rear area had some rust repair, and the rockers were replaced. More work may have been done, but this is the bulk of it. [ Chrome/Bright Work ] – The chrome on the grill, headlamp bezels, and rearview mirrors are in almost new condition. The hood ornament, molding, vent windows, and door handles look more original and show quite a bit more wear. They still have some shine. The tail light bezels have a brushed finish, and the gas cap looks nice although it does have a small dent in the top. [ Glass ] – It looks like there is a light tint on the front windshield, and the sides and rear have a darker tit. All of the glass must have been installed fairly recently, as we do not see any type of wear anywhere. We do not see any scratches, cracks, discoloration, delamination, bulls eyes, or even wiper marks. The glass is impeccable and looks almost new, if not new during the build. [ Interior ] – The interior was custom done with a vinyl and stitched headliner that matches the door panels (same material, with the custom design). The seats are a leather covered automotive seats. They recline and adjust back and forth manually. There are billet door handles, window cranks, and power antennas, as well as billet style surrounding the switches. The A/C ducts are surrounded by an aluminum piece. It has Vintage air conditioning and heating as well as a window mounted antenna (the black box on the dash is an antenna). There are left and right side, and rear view mirrors. The AM/FM receiver has a disc player and is iPod compatible with a removable front plate. The emergency brake is located between the seats, with a drink tray in front of that. It has reading lamps and a tilt steering wheel, and the rear seat backs give way to a storage compartment. Being extremely critical, the end covers on the seats and speaker grates have chipped and need to be repainted. The carpet in the rear is a little loose and needs to be pulled tight. Overall, the interior is very neatly done in a combination of nice, tan colored components inside and accent paint matching the exterior. [ Trunk ] – The trunk area has no exterior access but is accessible behind the rear seats. It appears to be fully covered and contains a spare tire that goes with the car. [ Tires and Wheels ] – The front tires are Firestone Firehawks, size P205 / 60 R15. The rears are also Firestone Firehawks, size P235 / 70 R15. The owner installed original, genuine Boyd Coddington wheels in a 5 spoke design. The tires and wheels do not show any type of wear, cracking, or damage, and the finish looks good. [ Engine and Transmission ] – The owner tells us the engine is a small block Chevrolet in the 305 c.i. configuration. It is coupled to a GM 350 automatic transmission. Under the hood, you can see it has: · Headers · Updated ignition · Vintage heat and A/C · Nice aluminum radiator with an electrical fan (set up to come on automatically when needed) · Chrome valve covers · Summit Racing · Chrome air cleaner cover · Chrome brake reservoir cap Very nice attention to detail! You can also see the A/C with a part sight glass is the same color as the car. The owner did tire rotation vs drive shaft, and believes it has 343 rear gears or close to that. He does not know if it has a positraction rear end. [ Chassis ] – The frame is actually a box frame, and it looks much as it would have originally. It has been nicely cleaned off and coated, and looks good with just a little surface rust. We do not see any rust perforation anywhere on the frame. The floor looks like it has been reconstructed with steel. It is nicely painted. Since this car was designed to be driven, the bottom side was kept in semi gloss black. Looking at the bottom of the transmission and engine, we see a little dampness and maybe a partial drip below the torque converter. The owner indicated that when it sits over the winter, the converter may leak down, and perhaps that causes some fluid loss through the speedometer gear set up. Underneath you can also see the rack and pinion steering and suspension in the front that was installed by the current owner. The 10 bolt rear end, emergency brake cables, and new exhaust (dual from front to back) were done during the build. [ Mechanical ] – Chad tested the following items, and they were working at the time of the listing: · Gas gauge · Speedometer · Odometer · Brake lights · Outside locking mechanism on both doors · Defroster · A/C compressor cycles and cools · Heater gets warm · Fan (on all 3 speeds) · Headlights · Front markers · Rear tail lights · Horn · Left and right, front and rear turn signals · Radio seems to power up fine, but we could not pick up any stations (the owner said it will pick up strong, local stations, but you would need a different antenna to extend the range) · The cowl vent in front of the wipers is in operating condition (opens and closes) but the handle had to be removed to accommodate the stainless and A/C vents. The locking mechanism for the driver’s window is not complete. The slide is missing; the Lokar shifting mechanism adjusts to all the different positions. When you first start the engine cold, it does blow a little bit of oil smoke. If you gas it a little bit, you get a little bit of blue smoke. As it sits idle, it runs around 13 volts. There is a little vibration, especially with the air conditioning on. It is minute but it does exist. As you start to drive, it does minimize, but it is not perfectly quiet. Going down the road at 50 – 60 mph, it drives nicely, and is very responsive and smooth. The rack and pinion is a nice upgrade, and it steers precisely. It does not have power steering, but it is easy to steer. Upon stopping, Chad did not notice any pulsation or pulling. There are disc brakes in the front and drums in the rear, and they behave as they should. It has a 350 General Motors transmission, and it seems to shift as designed. It is very smooth without any type of a shift kit. Driving at 50mph with the engine warmed up, the oil pressure is around 50 pounds. After it has been running on a warm day, it might run up to 180 with A/C on. Once sitting, it gets up to 200-220 (which is fairly rare), the electric fan automatically kicks on and brings it back down. This Chevy does track straight down the road. The owner has had been to rod shows in Louisville, Kentucky 5 or 6 times, to Michigan and Delaware once, and also to other shows. He has had friends follow him on trips and it is tracking correctly from behind. The way the build worked out, the rear axle is not centered exactly in the middle of both wheel openings. Questions? It is possible that this vehicle will be sold at a higher price than the highest bid (before or after the auction ends), if the reserve is not met. After the sale (if reserve is met or not), Auto Connection must receive at least a 10% deposit (wire transfer or official bank or cashier’s check) within 3 days of the end of the auction (or the Bill of Sale is signed). The high bidder/buyer has 10 days from this time to send the balance in full or final payment and inspect the vehicle (or have a 3rd party professional inspection). For the most part, the vehicle for sale is not “perfect”. It is unreasonable to assume that every single flaw in the paint, body, engine, etc. or any minor mechanical items (such as a light not working) be considered a reason to refuse the vehicle. Major rust/rot, undisclosed problems with the frame, etc. might constitute a legitimate reason for the buyer to refuse to follow through with the sale. In that situation, Auto Connection would negotiate with the seller and buyer to try to reach an agreeable solution. The buyer acknowledges that he has had the opportunity to inspect the vehicle to verify it is as listed and represented. He accepts the vehicle with all advertised equipment, options and accessories in "AS IS" condition with any faults or defects. The buyer will bear all future costs of repairs or correcting any defects that exist or may occur in the future.
