Vehicle Detail
This is a great, survivor 1957 Oval Window Bug. The body is in great shape for a 55 year old car, but does need a little TLC. I recently bought this Bug on a whim for my 16 year old daughter who is getting ready to drive. Wife wanted a newer one with air bags, etc., but I convinced her our daughter would have a lot more fun in this Oval. But after bringing it home and starting to dig in to it, its to nice now and could be great later to allow a 16 year old have it for her first car (the owners I bought it from begged me not to let her tear it up)! Unfortunately, they were all right, and I don't need another hobby car in the garage sitting next to the other one I don't drive. Not to mention a 68 Chevy CST truck and a 60 Chevy Wagon I've started on at my sons house. This Oval Bug deserves a good home with someone who's going to drive it. Its been sitting inside for to long already! I bought it from the 2nd owners who owned it for 37 years! They moved out here to VA from CA, and then parked it in their barn in 1982, and brought it out recently to sell (Real nice folks!). I brought it home, cleaned the fuel tank, free'd up the reserve valve, cleaned the hard fuel line, installed a new fuel pump and rubber fuel lines, and she fired right up. The car runs around the block, goes through all forward gears and the reverse with no problems, brakes are good, but needs to be tuned from sitting. Carb needs to be pulled and cleaned. Carb is only a couple years old, but has been sitting. Body is in good shape. The rear passenger foot wells need attention. The foot well behind the drivers seat needs a pan, the one under the battery could use a pan as well (or could glass over, but pan replacement is best). I have the pan for the battery area. The heater channels are in super shape (hard to believe) and the interior heats up great. Main body is nice, all 4 inner wheel wells are in great shape, trunk area nice, spare tire wheel well needs some hammer and dolly work as it had a minor tag at one time. One rust hole about the size of a quarter in the lower drivers side rear quarter panel, minor surface rust here and there, trunk lid still secures tight and pops open with the interior cable pull. W engine deck lid is nice and secures with the latch, rear apron perfect, doors look nice and latch, windows roll up and down, passenger window crank missing, but bought two new ones (need installed with clip), outside handles need to be adjusted to pop door open, currently reach in and use interior door handle, front seats need a good cleaning and adjust forward and backwards plus still have the side stamped metal plates installed (these are always missing), no back seat, but available here on ebay or craigslist all day long, all glass looks good, headlights, tail lights, dash lights all work. Brake lights and turn signals need attention. Original rear view mirror with single drivers sun visor still there. Needs front King Pins, tires look good but have been sitting. All fenders look good, need some hammer dolly work, front drivers fender had an old body repair at one time. The red paint looks to be old enamel, and possibly the thrid coat. I think the original color may had been seafoam green, not sure. All I did was pressure wash it and hand rub it out. It has scratches and chips all over it, but the patina looks cool!!! The owner told me he installed a 67 transaxle years ago, and a 62 front beam, because the front brakes shoes on a 62 beam are wider than a 57 beamfor better braking. Emergency brakes even work. He had a lot of great stories with owning this car for so long and was an all around good guy! I have some extra parts in picture with a tow bar. Hopefully you won't need it, but good to have. Also don't know what type of roof rack it is, thinking something from JC Whitney from years ago, but real cool to look at! Throw a surf board on it and drive it around like that, or an Old Vintage Cooler! This Oval window is a blank canvas!! Its still original, so you can give it some minor TLC and drive it as it is, fully restore it all original, or restore it full custom. These things don't come available much anymore, and not where it hasn't been all cut up. Take your time and drive while you restore! Now the business stuff; possible answers to questions that will come; Not looking to trade, won't take payments, I'll take a Million dollars for it, so if you want to make an offer, make one. I know what these things are worth. No, I dont recommend driving it home, it needs to be trailered or hauled with the tow bar, I have a clear title. Cash on pick up, or certified bank check, of course won't release the Bug until it clears. The mileage can't be actual, so assume a lot more for a 55 year old car. Thanks for all the interest and offers! As stated in the ad, I really dont want another car and cash, so please no trade offers. And no, I don't recommend just coming and driving this Oval home. You need to spend a weekend with it and fine tune it before hitting Route 66! I won't take less than my starting bid, so please don't think I'm desperate. I'll just put her away and play with it from time to time. This great little Oval is just going to go up in value with time! Thanks again. I've got the drivers side outside door handle working, and the wing window latch both working tonight. Just took a little WD40 (amazing stuff) and elbow grease. Will work on the passenger side door tomorrow night. Pulled the carb fuel inlet float valve and soaking it in carb cleaner tonight to reinstall tomorrow as well. I adjusted all 4 wheels brake shoes, and have good brake pedal with no pulling to the left or right.
