Up for auction is this 1953 Mercury Monterey 2 Door Hardtop. I am listing the car for my father. Dad did some restoration work on it in 2008/2009 to be a replica of the car that he and mom took on their honeymoon. They recreated their honeymoon trip for their 50th wedding anniversary in 2009 by driving down the Skyline Drive in Virginia (about 1000 miles round trip). Dad has 5 other antique cars that are restored to AACA National Award level which he drives on a regular basis, so this Mercury has not been used much lately. Condition is as follows: Mechanical: Reliable with non-original drivetrain consisting of 350 Chevy engine, automatic transmission and Ford rear end. Some brake/exhaust/wheel bearing work was done before car was driven on the Virginia trip where they had no issues. Tires are original style and have less than 2000 miles on them. It has leaked about a cup of transmission fluid in the 10 months that it was sitting in my garage. Interior: Has been redone in the past to a respectable look that would work well in a “car cruise” type of show. Body: Repainted in 2009, bumpers re-chromed and done to a level that would be very respectable at a car cruise. The odometer shows 74,075 miles that may or may not be original. All in all, it is a nice looking 53 Merc’ that shows well as original except for drivetrain and interior. On Aug-09-12 at 06:10:09 PDT, seller added the following information:Potential buyers have noted the following and I want to be sure everyone knows: The car does not have a working heater. You can see in the underhood pictures that there is no blower motor and no lines going to the heater core. The car may not be a "Monterey", but may actually be a "Sport Coupe".
