Vehicle Detail
1982 WV Rabbit "caddy" naturally aspirated pickup with 1.6L and Jetta 5-speed. WVO system my design after experience of 50K miles on MB 300SD. System is 2-tank, 6-port with closed return loop on WVO, diesel return to tank, a very tight system. Bought 2009 from expert home mechanic & friend who rebuilt lower engine but stopped short of head. No other history. Actual mileage unknown. Replacement odometer cable quit at 206K. No significant miles by last owner. I've put on ~15Kmiles (75% WVO) since 2009. Drove this vehicle NC to FL last August. Would do again without reservation. 38-40 mpg based on mileage calculations. Daily driver otherwise. Starts well on all but colder (NC) days but never fails to start. No problem when garage kept. Some smoke at start. Burns some oil but manageable. Oil pressure at idle runs 20 psi per gauge, 80+ at highway. [Note that picture showing oil pressure warning light is wired backwards so that RED is good.] Idles well, not a super quiet engine, but not rough. Easily maintained 70+ mph to FL. Can bog down on hills but not seriously. Body good, interior fair, engine/tranny dependable. No rust. Glass good. Doors close solid but with some misalignment. Paint good, albeit on a budget. Minor surface flakes. GTI wheel & seats. Some stains, no rips. Custom fabricated bumpers. Hitch, no lights. Rack can stay or go; custom rack for bed. Drove to FL with 18-foot kayak on top. Clutch has good life. Shifter linkage adjusted by local foreign shop. Shifter boot a little “shifty”. 5th gear tricky but always goes in. Great on highway. Vehicle not perfect but has never let me down or stranded. Wanted challenge of converting. Have Dodge Ram 5.9L (converted) and a gas truck. Am "vehicle heavy." Excellent first WVO vehicle. Full tank fuel and full explanation to winner. Bed rough w/dried oil from spills. Cleaned as well I could. Minor bare spots need tending. Worst oil under tool box$70 (Northern Tool) liner fits between wheel wells. Old shaped liner kept. Driver's side rocker panel damaged. Doors close tight but appear slightly off. No other body concerns . AC worked, but lost charge. Heater works, but vehicle never put out much heat. Defroster works. Fan best on high. Leaves slight anti-freeze on window. No significant drop in coolant. New expansion tank. Heater cable slightly bent. Might cut and just manually adjust per season. Lights, signals work (German relay. Fuel/temp gauges work. Horn works. Clock works but set pin busted. Dash lights work. Will pass NC inspection. Radio, dome light not working. Some accumulation of water behind seats but windshields properly sealed. Maybe left window open. Timing Belt 2010. Glow plugs 2010. new shifter linkage 2009, 120A alternator, AC compressor properly reseated; belts replaced. Proper oil changes w/Shell Dextron 15W-40 and Lucas. Recent battery. Tires have much life. One new. Good Spare. All 4 hub caps. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * WVO SYSTEM: 2-tank, 6-port w/closed-loop return on WVO, diesel return to tank. I am the only one to have run this on WVO. My oil is BONE DRY. I DieselCraft centrifuge to sub-micron. Pan test each batch. Pressure gauge shows 5-10 psi on either diesel or veg. Properly purge on shut down. Both filters easy to access. Pumps and heater for WVO filter all easy to get to. Have simply never needed to change WVO filter. Did once before FL trip just out of prudence. 1) Tank: and toolbox came with vehicle. Tank is Blitzer 15-gal air compressor tank. Cut out hole in bottom of tool box due to tank drain. Cut out slot for aluminum tranny cooler set in tank. Covered with plastic that cracked from heat. This, plus hole in box, proved to be source of oil in bed. Have since remedied splash-out. 12-gal usable oil. 2) Tube-in-Hose (TIH) heat exchanger uses single length of 3/8-inch aluminum from WVO pump to 3x8x14 plate FPHE by engine. Tube runs in 3/4-inch heater hose pulling coolant from heater. Brass isolation valves. Coolant return by insulated.1/2 copper . Coolant fittings all brass and tube. ZERO coolant X-contamination. Brass barbs. 3) Flat Plate Heat Exchanger (FPHE): NICKEL-BRAZED from WCR of OHIO. $250, not cheap Chinese copper brazing (copper = bad). Set behind passenger headlight away from air flow. Covered by 3/4-inches of closed cell foam. 4) 6-port Pollack controls WVO/diesel. Just past FPHE. Loop kept as short as possible. WVO stays below 180F; never an ounce of concern. Closed return loop on WVO, (160 average at injector nuts). Diesel returns to tank. Minimum WVO to diesel on purge. Never blended main tank. 5) Pumps: 2 CarQuest E8102S pumps in system (1 WVO, 1 diesel). Each runs only for its designated fuel. WVO pump pulls from tank and pushes through RACOR filter. Diesel pump under hood, pulls from tank. Right by OEM filter, easily accessed. Pumps have never failed or had vacuum leaks. 6) Controls. Keyed power from battery to kill switch (fused) and back to IP cut-out solenoid back to DPDT special for Pollack. Located @ left knee. Kill switch powers WVO filter heater. DPDT runs 6-port valve selection, pump selection. Separately installed lit toggle in cab controls 20A VegTherm relay. Additional VT Mega shown under hood will be removed. Not needed. Additional lit toggle available for other service. 7) Filters: Diesel stock (German). WVO is RACOR 690 with 83W heater wrap insulated. Starts on keying car. Additional sight filter on fuel return provides indication of fuel running. 8) Additional heaters: VegTherm standard from Plant Drive. Only needed in winter. Controlled by lit toggle (blue in picture). Heats fuel quickly on colder days. Uses lengths of 30R9 (high temp hose) on either side of heater. 9) Gauges: WVO temp and fuel pressure. Fuel temp gauge shown reflects vehicle moving in city traffic. Temp of fuel is 150-160 or more at injector nuts. No concerns about fuel being at proper temperature. Fuel gauge never used. Measure with metered broom stick. Simple, reliable. Full tank of fuel to winning bidder. Will thoroughly explain operating sequence to winning bidder. Any conceivable WVO system issue is simple to trace, and is a guaranteed “get home” system. $500 PayPal non-rundable deposit within 48-hours of winning bid. Seller reserves the right to end bidding at any time. Final payment by certified funds or local check that first clears. Prefer local pick-up but will try to work with buyer. Just that oil must remain <185. WVO has always remained in the heatlhy operating range. VegTherm 20A heater assures that.On Aug-05-12 at 07:17:38 PDT, seller added the following information: Additional pictures of undercarriage and towers available.
