Vehicle Detail

1973 Mercedes-Benz 280 SEL 4.5 W108 M117 Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE DESCRIPTION: This is a vintage and rare Mercedes-Benz motor car. The automobile is used. Buyers will be bidding on a 1973 Mercedes-Benz 280 SEL 4.5 W108 M117. The car is being offered with NO RESERVE. The seller encourages European collectors to bid. This vintage 200-Series S-Class Luxury Sedan has the highly sought floor shift automatic transmission. The classic lines of the 280 SEL 4.5 are evident in every picture of the exterior. Buyers may click on any picture to enlarge it. The 200 series Mercedes Benz has legendary reliability and durability. This automobile runs and is in generally good working order, but the battery is dead so it does not start. This 280 SEL 4.5 Liter luxury automobile was built from May 1971 to November 1972 by Mercedes-Benz. Only 8,173 of these cars were ever made worldwide. This automobile, chassis type W108, was the premium range full size automobile of Mercedes Benz; it has a legendary reputation for being one of the more easily restored and sought after motor cars by collectors. This automobile is the long wheel base model: the Mercedes Benz 280 SEL/1 4.5L. This motor car was built in Stuttgart, but sold only in the United States (as evidenced by the VIN). It bears repeating that only 8,173 of these cars were ever made worldwide. This classic automobile is equipped with a D-Jetronic Fuel-injected SOHC 4.5L V8 that delivers 200HP. The M117.984 engine accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in 9.5 seconds. This Mercedes-Benz W108 vehicle is equipped with the 4.5L SOHC cast-iron block M117 V8 engine. It was produced from 1971 to 1972 in the 280SEL 4.5. The D-Jet EFI system is tuned further for the 4.5 motor car with a specific ECU that gives a 10% full-throttle enrichment. Only a Mercedes-Benz is a Mercedes-Benz; you should accept no imitations and no “modified” or “improved” cars. This car has no "improvements" or "restorations." It was never owned by an old lady and I won’t insult you with dealer’s tales. I am sorry that I have to sell it: I was laid off. CONDITION: Considering the age of this car, the chassis is in good condition. The paint is in fair condition overall. The front and rear doors are fully functional and built to last. The trunk of the automobile is in good condition and the trunk itself works perfectly. The front and rear bumpers are in very good condition as is the chrome of both bumpers throughout (all rust-free). The wheel wells and the underside of the automobile are well preserved and generally rust free for this motor car (the muffler has signs of “spotting”). The fabric behind the rear seat (on the driver’s side) can be lifted because that corner of the fabric has become detached; but this is easily repaired. The power sunroof works. However, looking carefully, you can see spots ---easily repaired--- where weathering has removed small spots of paint on the roof. The rest of the chassis is free of this kind of weathering. The original mocha brown MB-Tex interior of the front seats remains in remarkably good condition. The interior of the W108 is generally well preserved. Although time has taken its natural toll on this luxury vehicle, every interior component is present as it came out of the factory in Stuttgart, Germany. The striking beauty of this S Class Luxury Sedan lies in the floor shift automatic transmission with the classic gear knob. The transmission is functioning and shifts well. A detailed inspection of the interior’s dash and front panel will reveal some cracks. By clicking on any photo of the dash you may zoom in and see those cracks up close. In addition, please notice nearly imperceptible cracking on the steering wheel. Please notice that the 12 o'clock position of the steering wheel reveals a hairline crack. Notice also the cracking on the steering wheel at the 9 o'clock position. By clicking on the picture of the driver’s side dash, you can zoom in to see the odometer clearly marking 41776 (that is, 141,776) original miles. The automobile’s clock does not function. The original Becker AM/FM radio and temperature controls are all present and functioning. In addition, there is some peeling of the wood on the original wood face of the ash tray and the original wood frame around the windows of the two front doors. The luxurious burled walnut wood paneling that graces the dashboard is all original and untouched (not “restored” or “improved”). The original mocha brown MB-Tex interior of the rear seats remains in remarkably good condition. The headrests are all original and are in good condition. Notice that the netting behind the front seats is original and intact; everything remains in remarkably good condition. The MB-Tex upholstery of the driver's seat backrest has sustained damage (see it on the lower right hand side of the driver seat’s picture). The driver’s seat backrest has a vertical and narrow 6 inch tear. Otherwise, the original mocha brown MB-Tex interior of the driver's seat remains in remarkably good condition. In addition, there is a small solitary puncture in the rear passenger seat (driver’s side). Nothing else in the rear seats is damaged. The solid construction of this luxury sedan continues to be evident in the flawless operation of virtually every power window on this car. The front passenger power window is fully functional, but it stops about one quarter of an inch short of the fully closed position. The center front and rear (overhead) interior lights work, but are dislodged (easily repaired). The interior trim at the base of the driver's side windshield: there is slight damage at the interior base of the post and slight arching of the original wood trim (please see the corresponding picture). The vertical post of the driver's door: the mocha brown MB-Tex trim has unfurled, it is NOT detached, yet there is some damage to the MB-Tex on the post at those points (see the picture of thee driver’s side vertical post). Notice also that the step-plate of the driver's door is cracked which has brought on the onset of rust on the cracked plate. The chassis itself around that plate is NOT rusted. The front and rear floor mats are damaged (please see the detailed pictures). The factory installed battery needs to be fully recharged as the automobile has been in storage. This vintage automobile has not been driven on a regular basis or registered for such driving for almost 3 years. Yet, with a jump, the car runs and the engine purrs beautifully. The exhaust pipe: the original rubber supports detached when the car was moved 90 miles on a flatbed tow truck for storage. Regular wire was used to replace those supports as seen in the corresponding picture. The front left tire: the nut at the 3 o'clock position is missing. The bolt will need to be re-tapped and a new nut is required. This automobile will need new tires and wheel covers. Inquiries and physical inspection: The seller will entertain any emailed questions about this car. The seller will reply promptly and frankly to every question.
