Vehicle Detail
INTRODUCTION AND DESCRIPTION You are viewing my 1986 BMW 635CSi. I am basically an “American V8” kind of car owner (I have nothing against foreign cars – there are many excellent examples past and present), but I always wanted the “Big Coupe”, the “Shark”, or the “Bavarian Ferrari” ... all names this exceptional car has come to be known by through the years. But when this BMW was new, I was fresh out of college and had no chance to pay the lofty $42,000 MSRP (over $80,000 in today's dollars) back then. I purchased this vehicle in 2005. There is a lot of information about the legendary 6-series BMW coupes that is available online (search on the term "BigCoupe" to start). Connsidered by many to be one of the best-looking BMW models ever made, a little over 86,000 6-series "E24 coupes" were built between 1975 and 1989 and about half of those came to the United States. Over that entire 15-year series run, BMW continued to make refinements that progressively improved performance. The E24 6-series coupes ended production in April 1989. One of BMW's "Ultimate Driving Machines" was gone, but it still holds onto a loyal following to this day. My “Shark” is one of 1,007 left-hand drive, 5-speed overdrive manual transmission, catalytic converter-equipped 635 CSi E24 vehicles built by BMW in Munich Germany to USA specifications. The engine is the only one available for the 6-series that year: the 3.4L, fuel-injected, SOHC (single overhead cam) straight-six cylinder (iron block and alloy head). The vehicle has the Recaro leather seats, power-steering, four wheel power disc brakes, and a power sliding/vented sunroof – again, all standard luxury equipment specific to this model. The vehicle has just over 165,000 miles and still runs very well. If you are not familiar with these cars, please note that that the engine and transmissions (particularly the manual transmissions) are virtually indestructible (engineered with a 400,000-mile life in mind if properly maintained). Look around online or ask someone who has one ... "Shark" owners rave about how well their 100,000+ mile vehicles still run Aside from routine maintenence, the only major repair under my ownership was new brakes in 2009. I do know the previous owner replaced the radiator in 2003 but beyond that I do not have much documented maintenance history available. The vehicle was professionally refinished in 2006 in its original “Bronzit Beige Metallic” (base/clear coat), and note that repairs were made around both rear wheel wells and to the front air dam. The floor pans are rust-free and completely original. All glass is good, and the painted, stainless, and chrome trim pieces are in good condition and consistent (minor dings and other imperfections) with the age of the vehicle. The tires are 225/50/16 Falkens and are brand new while the wheels are 16x7.5 BBS-brand alloys that are in good driver-quality condition (other than the spare, I do not have the original standard factory wheels). This wheel/tire combo gives the vehicle a nice stance, taking advantage of the design flaring built into the wheel wells. The seats in very good shape (the front seat coloring has been retouched while back seats are completely original). The dash is straight, color-fast, but has a small, star-shaped crack on top above the radio area. All instrumentation works (cruise control lever is very loose but still functions), and the AC works fine. No diagnostic lights are showing, the horn is not functioning, and the glove-box handle is broken, All power options work (except power antenna which is stuck in a partially extended position enabling radio reception), including the sunroof. Included (not shown) is an aftermarket Pioneer multi-CD player that was mounted in the trunk under the package tray and that was designed to match the original OEM cassette player, however it may no longer function. The original owner's manual is included. The “Shark” still has a loyal, inspired following of owners and others who just always liked the car. These late-80's E24 6 series BMW's are still fantastic performance machines judged by any standard, and now of course much more affordable then when they were new. This is not a "show" car as most certainly there are nicer and justifiably pricier examples out there. But like I did, if you always wanted one, or just want another one to replace the one you sold a long time ago, a good looking, solid, well-running, affordable example like this 635 CSi might fit the bill for you. Never having owned a foreign performance/luxury car before, I am very impressed with the way this car handles, its smooth but spirited acceleration through all the gear ranges, and seemingly effortless high-speed (65+ mph) cruising capability. Not really surprising considering- after all, this car was designed to Autobahn standards. I sure hope it finds a good home ... its earned a life of leisurely, good-weather cruising with someone who appreciates it for what it is and will continue to take good care of it AUCTION SUCCESS CONSIDERATIONS I have established a reasonable reserve (which will not be revealed while the auction is running) for this 1986 BMW 635 CSi Coupe. Please consider bidding during the auction to the extent and level you deem appropriate and based on whatever factors are important to you. Please note that I reserve the right to end this auction early at my sole discretion. If reserve is not met, I may provide Second Chance Offers (SCO) through the Ebay system, but note that this is only possible with people who actually bid during the auction. I may also write the high bidder(s) to discuss the price, again if the reserve is not met. If you get a SCO (which is a Buy-It-Now auction that only the seller and the bidder to whom it was sent can access), it will come through the Ebay system and be for a 24-hour duration. Of course please feel free to write me for confirmation and I will provide a phone number at which I can be reached. This also means that if you were not a bidder, contact with me through the Ebay system after the auction ends is not likely to result in a successful transaction. I am sorry in advance for the following auction process requirements, realizing they do not apply to the vast majority of responsible Ebay members. Encountering non-paying or unresponsive bidders is about the worst thing that can happen in a vehicle auction, given the significant preparation time and cost to market a vehicle this way. So, please BE SURE BEFORE YOU BID that you have any required financing, insurance, storage, transportation costs covered, customs and duties information, spouse's agreement, etc,. Simply put, do whatever you need to do to STAND BEHIND the actual bid(s) YOU MADE and were recorded during the auction. Bidders with less than 5 (five) feedbacks may at my discretion have their bids canceled and then blocked from further bidding for the duration of the auction unless they contact me in advance of bidding. Bidders who are "fishing for the reserve" by making and then canceling bids they NEVER intended to honor WILL BE reported to the Ebay Trust and Compliance Department. Bidders outside North America (anywhere other than the US, Canada, or Mexico “mainland”) are welcome to bid, but also must email me before bidding to discuss payment and shipping procedures. INSPECTION AND WARRANTY INFORMATION Please ask any questions that you may have that may not have been answered by this listing narrative and visual media attachments. Any and all relevant and appropriate questions you submit while the auction is running will be answered promptly and as thoroughly as possible by email only to ensure clarity of any correspondences. Again, given that this is a used vehicle please do not have unreasonable expectations as to its current condition or future condition under your ownership. Your bid forms the basis for a binding, legally enforceable contract. As such, if you require it, please make all pre-purchase inspections (at the sole expense of the bidder) before committing to purchase the vehicle. Inspections can be done by appointment only by you or your designated inspection service. Although I believe I have described and depicted (with numerous high-resolution photographs and video) this vehicle accurately, please note that this vehicle is sold "as-is, where-is” with no express or implied warranties or guarantees of any kind. With the required legal statements provided, I am a reasonable person and I know potential buyers may not be able to see this vehicle before bidding. If the winning bidder was unable do a pre-bid inspection and then determines that, after submitting a timely deposit but before taking delivery, I did not accurately represent the vehicle in some significant and obvious way, I will try to work it out with you. As reasonable people, if we cannot figure something out, I will immediately refund your entire deposit and we can both move on without any further obligation to each other. Please recognize that this is not an invitation for potential bidders to skip your own pre-purchase due diligence and is not an opportunity for me and the winning bidder to try later to negotiate away our respective contractual responsibilities. PAYMENT AND STORAGE A $500 deposit is required from the winning bidder, due electronically via PayPal within 24 hours after the auction ends, to hold the vehicle. I will not be accepting trades. Full payment is due within 7 days of auction end via cash, wire transfer, or certified bank check (drawn on a major US bank). Clear title in my name is in hand and vehicle can be scheduled for buyer pickup by appointment at anytime after full payment is received and cleared. I can hold the vehicle in indoor storage for 15 days (or longer, if weather or other uncontrollable factors emerge) at no charge to the winning bidder after the auction (the charge is $15.00 per day after 15 days). Thank you for viewing my auction. On Jun-14-12 at 03:36:08 PDT, seller added the following information: I need to clarify something in the listing. This car (all 6 series vehicles of this vintage have it) has a very sophisticated diagnostic system that monitors information onboard the vehicle. Red lights come on (e.g, washer fluid low, coolant issue, lights out, etc.) when the system detects something that needs attention. The system also allows the driver to press a button and do an immediate diagnostic check as needed. "No diagnostic lights are on" means that the system appears to be operating in both the automatic and manual mode and it is not showing any issues which is a good thing. Unfortunately I included this point in a sentence that discussed items that were not working. Please write if you have any questions.
