1974 BMW 1602 European Model The BMW for sale here is unique in many ways. Most importantly it is an all original, always cared for, low mileage European delivery car. In 1974, BMW shipped only the 2002 version to the US. In Europe and around the world, BMW sold the 1502, 1602, 1802, and 2002. The United States mandated the safety bumpers beginning with the 1974 model. Models sold outside the US had the new style square taillights but retained the old style bumpers. You might think the other models were less sporty but BMW had a way of balancing these cars beautifully. This 1602 is lighter and is as sporty and fun as any 2002. I also own a tii and a turbo, and this little car is as fun to drive as either of those cars. This 1602 drives and handles amazingly well. It spent most of its life well cared for in Germany. It was purchased from a 92 year old gentleman and brought to the US in 2007. It had traveled only 90,000 kilometers (about 55,000 miles) at that time. This is not a restored car. This car is truly original - paint, carpet, interior, everything. Everything is in excellent condition. No cracks in the dash, nothing to repair. There are only two small replacements. Because the cloth inserts in the seats had some stains I had the inserts replaced. The fabric was ordered from Germany and matches the original. The seats were done by an experienced upholsterer and you cannot tell the inserts have been replaced. I also had the seat belt webbing replaced (a safety issue), but again done by a professional who maintained the original hardware and even the tags. Mechanically, the car is in top shape and needs nothing. The car has approximately 60K miles (97K kilometers), and the engine has excellent compression tests. The entire mechanics have been gone over and the car is ready to drive anywhere. This is a very easy car to maintain. The body and the bottom are rust free and in excellent condition. Look carefully at the photos of the dash and the door panels. You rarely find an ’02 of any year in this condition. Style: Fans of 02s know that 1974 is the critical year when the body was updated but also the safety bumpers were mandated. In Europe the safety bumpers where not required so a European 02 has the best of both worlds – all the beneficial updates of the Model 74 without the big bumpers. Many owners update their 74-76 models to match this look. This is the cleanest and best looking original ’02 you will ever find. I realize that most ’02 buyers want a car they can modify for personal taste. This is a car for someone who wants to drive an ’02 just the way it came from the factory, and appreciates the long term value of an original classic. I know lots of ‘02s change hands at very modest prices and make an affordable classic for many. I also know how much people spend getting their cars into the shape so they look good and are trouble free. The reserve on this car is higher because it is needs nothing and is an original car. I believe a low mileage original ’02 like this one is the best buy you can make in a classic. The car will come with the original Bakelite steering wheel. Some of the pictures show a sport wheel that is not included. It comes with the rare Ronal wheels.
