Vehicle Detail
1968 Hurst / Olds Convertible Clone A great-looking, powerful muscle car, ready for street, strip or show. LOTS of fun, and very powerful. Own a great piece of muscle car history, and not the same chevy/ford that everyone else drives. ENGINE: This car features a true Olds Rocket 455 cubic inch engine, with correct “C” heads and a mild cam. The engine was completely torn down and professionally rebuilt with a new cam, and lifters. Estimated compression is about 10.5:1, so it runs on pump gas, but still has plenty of power. The engine has less than 5,000 miles on it, and pulls strong. The heads were professionally ported by D & M Performance. The oil used has always been Brad Penn Racing Oil, since it still has zinc to protect the cam and lifters. CARB: The carb is “correct” for a 1968 Hurst Olds, and was professionally rebuilt by Cliff Ruggles, author of “How to Rebuild and Modify Quadrajet Carburators”. So yes, he literally wrote the book on it. TRANSMISSION: The transmission is a reinforced TH-350 with a mild shift kit. The transmission was rebuilt and strengthened to handle the torque. The transmission is hooked up to a correct Hurst Dual-Gate shifter, THE shifter to have in your muscle machine. SUSPENSION: Front and rear suspension were rebuilt with new poly-graphite bushings. Rear control arms were “boxed” with inserts and an anti-roll bar was added. Front end has all new bushings and ball joints, and an anti-roll bar. The rear suspension has adjustable air shocks. WHEELS: Wheels are true Oldsmobile 15” x 7” SSII wheels, painted the correct charcoal color for 1968. All spin true with no leaks. The 15” wheels are rare. TIRES: Tires are B.F. Goodrich Radial T/As, with plenty of tread left. REAR-END: The rear-end is a true Olds 3.08 Anti-Spin (“Posi-Traction”), Type O differential, with no noise or grinding. SHIFTER: The floor shifter is a genuine Hurst “Dual Gate” shifter, correct for the 1968 Hurst Olds. It was professionally rebuilt by Hurst Corporation in 2008. INTERIOR: The interior has new carpet and newer seat covers, all correct for a 1968 Hurst/Olds. The power top is new, and the rear window is clear and glass. Top goes right up with no problems, but getting it clamped down takes some work. The top does not leak. Carpet is new. EXTERIOR: The paint was new in 2009, and still looks pretty good. The colors are correct for a 1968 Hurst Olds (Peruvian Silver and black), but there are a few chips and defects here and there. The rear bumper is a correct 442/Hurst Olds bumper WITH the rear exhaust cut-outs, and was re-chromed in 2007. Car starts right up and runs great. Drive it anywhere. FAQ: Question: Why are you selling this car? Answer: I have a 16 year old daughter. This car won’t survive her, and she won’t survive the car. Question: How long have you owned this car? Answer: We bought it in Indiana in 1998. Question: Is the car fun? Answer: More fun than a mouse at a beauty pagent. Question: What is the mileage on the car? Answer: The Odometer reads just under 95,000 miles. I do not know if this is accurate. Question: Is this a 442? Answer: No. This is a Hurst Olds clone. Hurst Olds had a bigger engine. :-> Question: What is the history of the car? Answer: This car started out as a 1968 Cutlass Convertible with a Rocket 350, 2 bbl carb and a two-speed transmission. It was fun, but not fun enough. Question: Is it a real Hurst Olds? Answer: No. It is a tribute. A clone. A fake. Real Hurst Olds list for around $50,000, and officially, there were no convertibles. So you can buy this car, insure it like a normal car, drive it when you like, and not worry. Question: Is the car perfect? Answer: Nope. She has not had a complete “frame off” restoration. Instead, she is a daily driver, and is powerful and looks great. That being said, there are lots of small things that could use some attention. Some of the trim needs re-chromed. The paint has a few chips and flaws. There is a rust hole in the right rear inner fender well. The interior door panels are original, but are showing their age, etc., etc. Question: Does the air conditioning work? Answer: No. We had to pull the air conditioning unit from under the hood in order to fit the big engine. We still have all the A/C parts, in case you want to re-fit it. Question: Does the radio work? Answer: The original AM radio is in the dash, but not hooked up. We do not know if it works or not. However, the dash has not been cut to fit a modern stereo, so that is a plus. Question: What kind of gas mileage do you get? Answer: I really don’t know. I never wanted to look. I assume somewhere around 10-12 mpg, IF you drive sensibly. But that would not be very much fun, would it? Question: What would you change about the car? Answer: The exhaust. Right now it has factory exhaust manifolds on it, and the dual exhaust is perhaps a little restrictive. I would consider headers, a 2.5” exhaust, with Walker Dynomax mufflers. Great sound, and I think it would free up some horsepower and torque. Question: Can my grandmother drive the car? Answer: Yes. It is still an Oldsmobile, with a nice, civilized ride. You can drag race this car on Friday night, take it to the car show on Saturday, and take the grandkids to get ice cream in it (easy clean-up with vinyl seats!) on Sunday. Question: Will you end the auction early? Answer: No. I don't think that is fair to everyone else. Question: Will you deliver the car? Answer: I am willing to meet you at a location of my choice in the St. Louis, Missouri area. Expect that I will want to meet at a bank or police station. Question: Can I come see the car? Answer: If I get enough requests, I will consider showing the car on Saturday or Sunday, April 28/29. Question: Can I drive the car before I buy it? Answer: No. Insurance does not cover that. Question: Will you work with foreign buyers? Answer: No. If you are a foreign buyer, please acquire a U.S. agent or broker and do business through them. Question: Will you accept a trade? Answer: No. Check out the car's Facebook page (complete with videos) at http://www.facebook.com/?sk=ff#!/profile.php?id=100003691044618&sk=wallOr just sign into your Facebook account and search for (first name) Hurst (last name) Olds, from Breese, ILQuestions?
