Vehicle Detail

I'm moving to the salty northeast and have to sell this rare Mark 1 Volkswagen: 159,300 original miles (w 69,000 on rebuilt motor) meticulously maintainedOriginal (rebuilt) 1.6L turbo diesel motor with 5-speed manual transmission (3M/9Q). Mostly garage kept. Recent servicing with comprehensive timing belt replacement, all belts, oil, air filter (April 2012). Oil changed routinely (<3000 miles) with high-quality German filters (Mann). All major repairs up-to-date, including: shocks, brakes, clutch, and tires. I also had the diesel injection pump rebuilt by a Bosch technician (2010). The white paint is original and still shines great with a good coat of wax. With continued interest, this car could look mint. This car has been my favorite road trip vehicle as well as the tow-vehicle for my classic airstream motorhome. At least 12,000 miles on the odometer are tow miles, so the engine is quite a bit newer than what it shown on the odometer. As you can see I had mounted roadmaster tow-bar brackets on the front bumper. (If you are looking for a tow-vehicle, this car is perfect because it is lightweight midsize car that weighs about 1000 lbs less than a modern compact.) Ownership History: I bought this car in 2006 after it had a complete engine rebuild by the owner/technician of a highly rated German specialty shop in Salt Lake City, First Integrity Auto ( www.firstintegrityauto.com ). It was the owner's personal car. (Although these motors routinely rack 300-500k before needing a rebuild, the car's second owner had blown a coolant hose and let the car overheat). The car originated in Arizona, then moved to Utah, and has been registered by me in California (from 2006 with valid tags through Feb 2013). Drive: On the highway it typically gets 32-38 mpg and in the city, 26-30mpg. (That's 450-550 miles between fill-ups). All the fuel lines in the vehicle have been converted to dupont viton hoses so you can fill the tank with regular diesel or mix with any variation of Biodiesel up to B99. In California, diesel vehicles of this vintage require no SMOG testing, which makes for much easier experiences with the DMV. I had the injection pump rebuilt by a Bosch Technician in 2010, which should give many years of continued service running diesel or Biodiesel. The car is tight, clean, well aligned, starts easily, and has been very reliable. I have driven this car on many road trips and have taken numerous 300+ mile trips between San Francisco and Los Angeles. The turbo diesel has enough torque to get over the passes and it has never left me standing by the road. Interior: Inside the car, you'll find the original tan hounds-tooth cloth interior (with no tears, burns, or stains), and original carpet, in very good condition. (I just had it freshly detailed by a great detailer here in LA). The car is very roomy and with the seats folded down it has a bed like a truck. The dashboard is new (replaced in 2008 and in mint condition) and all controls, instruments, dash lights, work. I swapped the original 0-85mph speedometer/odometer with a matching brand new volkswagen 0-140 mph gauge. (In my photos you'll see the old removed gauge as well as the new, low mileage one). Many interior improvements including new dashboard, black steering wheel (from a VW Cabriolet), new rubber floormats, new shifter knob, custom leather shifter boot, gauge cluster (turbo boost, voltmeter, and an extra fuel gauge --that I had installed for vegetable oil conversion). I also pre-wired an oem sytle switch in the dash for fog lights. The A/C works great and has been recently serviced and recharged. Sound: In 2008, I installed a brand new, 1990's era Blaupunkt Lexington CM84 Stereo (w/ aux/ipod input), an amplifier, and replaced all four speakers. (This amp is capable of powering the rear speakers as well as handle a sub-woofer, but I've never installed one). Ride: New brakes all around (2010) with Powerstop vented rotors on the front and new pads and cylinders on rear (2010). Wheels: wheels are 14" GTI style alloy wheels from a 90's VW Cabriolet. The tires are new all-season (2011) Falken sincera tires and they ride great and have good traction in all conditions. (I've taken these up to the San Bernadino Mountains many times on Snow boarding trips). Shocks: Bilstein touring (front) and KYB rear, installed in 2007 and still riding tight. This car has been very thoroughly maintained, the only parts under the hood that not been replaced or rebuilt are:the original Bosch alternator (still runs strong). the original radiator (pressure tested in 2008). Extras: 13" alloy wheels with blizzak snow tires (30% tread remaining). yakima roof rack spare Bosch fuel filterfuel gauge for vegetable oil conversion (installed in dash but not wired) Snow chains salvaged window and door sealsmisc interior parts factory repair manualchilton repair manualtiming belt toolsfront strut tools front driver side headlight trim to replace the cracked one currently installed on car. extra rear bumper (needs minor surface repair and re-coat with bumper black). Minor issues: Small surface imperfections: some very small ( <1/4") surface rust spots and some cracks in black trim paint. The car's second owner had been in a minor fender bender and did a poorly executed repair on the right rear quarter panel. Last fall I had the area repaired and repainted properly. It blends perfectly and has an awesome shine.Door and window seals have minor gaps in them and it makes for a slightly louder ride on the highway. (I'm including a set of salvaged windows and door seals, which can be used to splice together a better seal). Rear bumper currently mounted with a VW Quantum bumper rom the incorrect year. (The original also included, is in good shape with a small break in the plastic cover. If I were keeping the vehicle, I'd have the original cleaned, repaired and reinstalled.). This car may be prone to breaking speedometer cables prematurely. I replaced the original cable about 30,000k ago and another about10k back. I have noticed occasional vibration in the speedometer driveshaft (slight jumping needle) that may shorten the life of the speedometer cables. This was part of the reason I replaced the speedometer with a new unit. If the cable snaps, the worse thing that happens is you are temporarily without speedometer, but it does not effect the drive ability of the car. I've included an extra cable in case the one installed goes. I had this checked out by my VW shop here in LA (Jomag) and the shop owner thought there was nothing to worry about as far as the health of the transmission goes. blaupunkt stereo LED backlights not working. Display works fine, but recently the back-lit illumination stopped working. (I suspect this would be worth repairing). I've also seen this deck on sale on ebay ~$150. Please email with with any questions. I have detailed spreadsheet of the work done on the car since the engine rebuild that I'll forward to serious buyers. I have been very methodical in taking care of this car and have really loved it's unique styling and reliable power-plant. Out of all the vehicles I have owned (American, British, and Swedish, this is the most enjoyable to car to work on). With proper care it could easily drive for another 30 years!
