This is a very original 1968 Mercury Cougar - ORIGINAL CALIFORNIA BLACK PLATE CAR!  Car was purchased brand new in the Bay Area and has always lived on the San Francisco peninsula since new. Built in San Jose. The car has an optional deluxe interior, color matched to the exterior pant.  It is equipped with its original factory 302-4BBL V8 engine with optional 4 barrel carburator.  It has Select Shift Automatic, Power Steering, Power Front Disk Brakes - plus the car is equipped with its original factory AM-FM stereo with 4 speakers, a rare option.  It is also equipped with factory in dash air conditioning. In short, its a nice, originally equipped car with a couple unusual fun options. The car is painted in its original factory maroon color and has a black vinal top that looks great and is in great condition.  The body is exceptionally straight and original with very straight body panels that look really fantastic!  The frame and underside of this car also look very solid, original and straight. This car has absolutely no rust whatsoever due to its life in California in the San Francisco Bay Area.  If your goal is to find a really nice unmolested original car with a great original body, this is it!  Its very rare to find a "black plate" California car that is still wearing its original California license plates that were issued back in 1968 but this car does!  What that means is the car has always been registered in California for every year of its existence. The original owner (very slightly) modified the car sometime shortly after he purchased it brand new by removing the "Mercury" and "Cougar" factory body script that was included when new in 1968 plus the rear side marker reflectors.  These are very minor alterations and can easily be replaced if desired.  The original owner preferred the body "clean" (like a 1967 Cougar) which is why he removed these things.  The original owner also purchased it vintage late 1960's aluminum American Racing Wheels when the car was relatively new which remain on the car today.  They are period correct Wheels. These are the only "modifications" the car has ever had.  As mentioned, this is a really nice original California car that has always had "adult" owners. Dash, headliner and trunk are in great original shape, dash has no cracks at all. No tears or rips in upholstery. Drives like a dream!  You'll have fun and be very proud owning this car and its a rare opportunity to find an original Cougar from California! The car runs very good. There has had a LOT of mechanical work into it!  The entire front end suspension has recently been rebuilt by a vintage Mustang expert.  The brakes, tires, battery, etc. etc are all in Very good shape.  The heater core  has been replaced and other unusual components.  The engine had a valve job several years ago and I have always run the car on synthetic "Mobil One" oil. This car has NEVER been my day to day driver and so, I have put very few miles on it since I have owned it.  I have all reciept and documentation, so you will get a very accurate picture of all that has been done since the beginning of this cars life.
