Vehicle Detail
1960 Oldsmobile 98 Convertible Indianapolis Pace Car. I have done extensive research and I am convinced this is a Indianapolis Pace Car for the Indy 500 that occurred on May 30 1960. This is also an one owner car that has sat in a garage in Indiana since 1969. The car was a Oldsmobile Company car and was delivered in April 1960. I went to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this .week and they have no records of the actual pace cars, just some pics. The pics show the Pace car was white with a blue leather interior. That is exactly what I have and the gentleman I purchased the car from said they purchased the car as a Demo from Nottingham Oldsmobile in Marion Indiana in 1961 and it had never been titled. It had a repaint prior to him buying the car. My thoughts are they couldnt sell the pace car with the Indianapolis Pace Car graphics so they repainted it to a slightly darker color so the car would sell. The car has not been driven since 1969. The car is in excellent condition for its age. It shows corrision in the driver side rocker panel and driver side rear quarter panel, and a few very small holes in the trunk floor pan. The frame and underside of the car appears to be very solid. It was stored in a small two car garage with a concrete floor. The interior is decent, the top was left down for the last 43 yrs, I gave it some cleaning. The door panels and the rear seat are in pretty good condition, the rest will probably need some restoration. I have not tried to turn the engine over or start the car, it is just as it was left 43 yrs ago. The doors open and close like they should. The only parts missing I am aware of are a couple of the headlight rings, spark plug wires, alternator/generator, trunk lock, keys to car. I have cleaned the interior and exterior to so it shows the current condition of the car. The car is very straight and appears to be very complete. It has Power Windows, Power Seat, Power Brakes, and Power Steering. I also have the original owners manual with procto-plate. I recently transfered the title over into my name and should have the new title in a couple of days. I enjoy buying old cars and this is a great car with lots of potential with a great restoration. If the car does not meet my reserve I will have the car restored myself. If you have questions, you are welcome to contact me directly at 317 440 1278. Happy Bidding! On Apr-08-12 at 15:04:18 PDT, seller added the following information: I added a couple of pics that came directly from the Museum at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway just this week. The pic was taken in 1960 at the Speedway in May of 1960. The gentleman in the Passenger seat I was told by Speedway staff is of the late Tom Carnegie which was the voice of the Speedway for 50 yrs, 1946 to 1996. He passed away last year. The pic shows in black and white that the rear seat is a multi-color dark seats (blue). In other pics at the speedway in a Pace Car book it shows it as blue seats. I have had some emails saying they were white seats. Perhaps there was a car that had white seats, where are the pics with white seats? I went directly to the source and they clearly show blue leather seats which my car has. I am not a Indy 500 Historian or claim to be one. In my mind from the pics I have they had blue seats. I wish in 1960 better records were kept of serial numbers of the Pace Cars, I have not been given any of those numbers by any staff at the Indianapolis 500 Museum. On Apr-08-12 at 15:11:42 PDT, seller added the following information: One more note, finding a 1960 Olds 98 Convertible with one owner since 1961 in very good restoreable condition isnt easy to find whether this car is Pace Car or not a Pace Car. The NADA value for the car albeit without it being a Pace Car is $83000 in High Retail Condition. Obviously this car needs a full restoration to command top dollar. This car has great potential for the right person. On Apr-09-12 at 17:12:50 PDT, seller added the following information: Since the Indianapolis Motor Speedway did not maintain records of VINs its my assertion this could be a Indy 500 Pace car from 1960, there is not anyway to prove it for certain it is a Pace Car. It is my thoughts by the Paint Color, Interior Color, Date of Delivery, as well as the information from the only owner of the car that is very well could be a Pace Car used by the Speedway in 1960. As I stated earlier, even if this is NOT a Pace Car this car is in very good condition and is very restorable and VERY difficult to find in this condition. If you would like additional pics, just drop me an email or a phone call. ThanksOn Apr-10-12 at 15:39:22 PDT, seller added the following information: Added four more pics, one of the underside (look at those original floor pans), data plate, passenger door panel, original style battery. I have many more pics if you would like to see them, only can post 24 here.
