The prewar "Junk Formula" offered inducements to competitors to enter stock-block engined race cars to compete with purebred race cars. Among the Offys, Maseratis, Sparks, Alfas and Novis entrants and drivers cherished the underdog dream that preparation, ingenuity, ambition and opportunity would combine to bring glory in the best tradition of the movies. Their vision, as it turned out, was realized in Hollywood. The Cantarano Cannonball Special offered here achieved its fame and recognition not on the bricks of Indianapolis but on the silver screen of Hollywood. Entered at Indianapolis in 1950 (#79), The Cantarano Cannonball Special's qualifying average with Jimmy Leighton of 121.065 failed to make the field in which the slowest qualifier was Jimmy Jackson's Cummins Diesel Special at 129.208 mph. Powered by a Wayne-head Chevy Stovebolt Six, the Cantarano Cannonball Special didn't, like many others, make The Show. Following its Indy qualifying attempt the chassis was shortened and run on dirt, reportedly by Rodger Ward. Laid up for years thereafter, it was returned to operating condition by Peter Hathaway and used in the 1980's in Western Racing Association events. The Cantarano Special is now powered by a 216 cubic inch Chevy six replacing the 265, which its replacement dash plaque indicates it once raced with under registration and program #79. Liveried in Royal Blue with Black upholstery it has a Halibrand quick-change rear axle, '35 Ford 3-speed transmission, Offenhauser aluminum valve cover and rare Wayne cylinder head. A roll bar has been added for safety and it has a cooling fan for low speed operation. Recently pulled out of long term storage from a private collection in Texas, the car starts and drives nicely - although race prep and sorting is highly recommended before any major use. This Cantarano will be sold on a Bill of Sale only - The car's 1980 California "Pink Slip" originally issued to Mr. Hathaway will be passed along to the new owner. Vintage oval racing is increasingly popular and important and the Cantarano Cannonball Indy car will be a rewarding and appreciated participant. Although it may be appreciated more for its on-screen appearance driven by Chuck Leighton at Arlington Downs in Texas during filming for "To Please a Lady" than for its actual racing accomplishments, holding off Clark Gable - on screen or off - is not to be minimized.
