Vehicle Detail
1. 1981 911 SC I’ve owned this car for 12 years. I’m the fourth owner. I purchased from Car Nut best friend in Albuquerque, NM in 2001 as I retired after 20 years of surviving USAF Pararescue Teams. I bought it unannounced as a retirement gift. My wife was pissed... Car was in ABQ it's first 20 years and I took it to CA for couple years and it’s been in the mid west since 2003. I have clear title in my name as the car fax will show. Always adult owned and in complete original condition (other than after market steering wheel and short-shift kit installed). 2. Car is sound and engine is very strong. I’ve never had an issue with the motor. Estimated 200K miles on car. Speedo stopped working at about 150K. Oil pressure still very good, matching revs and all early Carrera updates completed (pop off valve, hydraulic chain tensioners). Car cranks right up, every time. 3. Clutch needs work (slipping) and transmission is due a rebuild. I noticed there’s a rear brake sticking recently as I haven't been driving it. The transmission works fine but there’s some wear on the synchros that causes some gear whine and the transmission to pop out of fifth gear. 5. In the short term, addressing the clutch would set the car up to drive very reliably. I’ve driven the tranny in it’s current state for several years and it hasn’t gotten any worse. I replaced the clutch 7 years ago, so it may need adjustment and not a complete rebuild. 6. I’d suggest that while addressing the clutch, the next owner have the transmission done at the same time while you have it out and taken apart. 7. Cosmetically there’s normal wear for 31 years of use. The car is all there, it's never been tracked or in an accident that I know of. Floor panels are all pristine. 8. I've had it serviced and inspected by KH Motors, http://www.khautomotive.com/. Kevin told me it was a very solid car and a good candidate for upgrading to a 3.2 engine and either restoring or setting up for fast track fun at KC Speedway. It’s very tight, tracks straight as an arrow. Probably because it's been treated with respect for it's lifetime. 9. My plan was to eventually send the motor and tranny/clutch to Motor Meisters to have it all done at the same time. 10. The paint is original and is peeling on back lid and roof and fading on hood. Side of car still looks nice when it’s washed and waxed. There are two small rust bubbles on the well at the base of the A pillar and windshield where water sits and on the front right quarter a few inches behind the wheel well. (I can send pictures of that if interested). 11. Back seat leather has deteriorated, front is nice, driver seat has seam needing restiched and a small 2 inch tear in the leather. Dash has crack. Head liner torn near back window. Right hand window drops off window channel now and again and I have door panel open so I can push it back on when that happens. 12. AC isn’t working (like all 81 911s), and there’s a slow main seal leak (again pretty standard) the engine bay is bone dry and clean. Up until last fall I was using the car as a daily driver. At that point I just started driving on Saturday mornings for fun. My last ride was this past fall 2011 when I noticed the clutch starting to slip slightly. Technically I’m not selling the car. At least I haven't acknowledged that fact yet. But, for a reasonable offer I’d consider it. The car is very sound and the work that’s required is well in the normal range for it's age and mileage. An investment to address these issues would be rewarded with a unique car ready for the next 25 years. I have loved every day of owning this 911. It's become my Zen to wake up early, grab a coffee and find a road south of town... Whether that was the West Mesa in ABQ, or Highway 1 south of Half Moon Bay, CA or south of KC. No need to drive something too hard or too fast when every turn, every gear, every mile brings enjoyment. I think in the end, that's what this car has meant to me over the past decade. You can't not smile when you drive these cars... It’s worth more to me to keep and update and give to my kids for college than to take anything less than my reserve price. I’ve been watching eBay, Craig's list, Auto Trader and given the relatively limited amount of these vehicles available for purchase and many of them coming with all the work done at more than twice the price - I think this is fair. At this price, you can have the work done at your particular level of interest and obsession and know exactly what you have in the end. I have all records during my ownership. Biggest think I’d done was the clutch in my time with it. Other than that, very minor issues have needed addressing. You aren't purchasing this Porsche from a Retired Navy Seal. I didn't have a Porsche key ring, I didn't spend a lot of money buying extra things that said "Porsche" on it and sticking it to my Porsche. I didn't talk about taking driving schools or mess up and toss it into a ditch showing off. I drove it. I enjoyed it. I had a ton of fun driving it with respect. I learned to admire the men who built this car... When you shut the door, you still hear it.I hope you find another car, move on and decide not to purchase this one. Thank you. Here's a movie showing why these cars are some of the best priced drivers cars you can find that will still last you another 20-30 years. Don't tell your wife. Buy it, trust me...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3U3le7OLqc Do me a favor - Just don't put any Navy stickers on it if you do buy it!
