Vehicle Detail
1971 Camaro Z28 with only 19,311 original miles with all original sheetmetal, interior, wheels and tires, bumpers in excellant condition. Very original unmolested car! Hello, everyone this is an all original sheetmetal example of the sought after Second Generation 1971 Camaro Z28. The 1970 and 71 2nd generation Camaros are just as desireable as the 1st generations today. It took a while for them to come to the same level as 67-69's but they are finally there. Now before I get to0 far into the description I want to let everyone know that there is about 340 full page pictures and a 15 minute video showing a walk around and the car starting up. Also I wanted to give everyone my contact tel # which is 570-875-7109. Pease feel free to call me with any questions you might have about the car or anything else you would like to ask. Also if anyone is wondering about a Buy it Now price please call me at 570-875-7109 and we can discuss it, if we agree on a price I can add a Buy it Now in the auction so that it can be ended early. Now lets get back to the car. The car was sold new at Byrne Bros in White Plains, NY. This low mile, very original, fully documented example is finished in its original color combination: (53) Placer Gold with Black pianted stripes and Black interior. The documentation includes the original protect-o-plate, original owners manual with plastic cover and 2 original cut Keys with knockouts still entact, statements from original owner and 2nd owner, copy of title with original mileage documented. The original miles are 19,311 these are true to the car and are documented as such. Again the miles are NOT 119,311 but only 19,311. This is the reason for the unmolested body (sheetmetal) and interior. The car was just not used and was garage kept since 1971 out of the elements. The reason the car got painted was the fact that the car did have some paint chips here and there, enought to make the decision to entriely strip and fully repaint the car the correct way and fully repiant the car to bring it back to showroom condition. It was a one owner car until 1977. The car has lived its entire life in New York till 2005 and than here in Pennsylvania and has been garage kept from 1971 till today. It was a really nice and very clean original paint driving car when it was purchased from the 2nd owner in 2005. Every piece of sheet metal on this car is original and rust free, there was and is no rust to be found anywhere on the car. The car received just a re-paint not a restoration on the body it did not need it. AGAIN, EVERY PIECE OF SHEET METAL IS ORIGINAL! THIS CAR HAS NO FILLER ANYWHERE! The Exterior on the car was completely stripped to a bare shell for the paint. A rotisserie was not used simply because it was unnecessary. The body was in such good condition that it did not require work. All of the sheet metal is factory. There were no panels replaced on this car. The floors and all of the other areas that normally rust were immaculate on this car. The car was painted it's original color Placer Gold with painted Black stripes just like it was in 1971. The car was taken completely apart ( both doors, trunk lid, hood, all glass, trim, bumpers, weatherstripping were removed from the car) it was completely stripped to bare metal then primed and block sanded and then sprayed with several layers of top of the line PPG base coat clear coat paint before the clear went on, the Black stripes were painstakingly marked out using the original traces from the original stripes before the car was stripped, than the clear coat was applied . It was then wet sanded over and over then buffed to a mirror finish with no signs of orange peal anywhere. The cars paint is a 9.9 out of a 10. The paint job performed on the car is a $15,000 + paint job. There was no shortcuts taken in the strip and paint process. Please look at all the detail in the paint when you look over the pictures, even in the door jams, trunk jams, underneath the doors, etc. look perfect and flawless. There was not even as much as a door ding anywhere on this car. I cannot stress enough how rare a find this car is. Almost every 2nd generation Camaro I have ever seen that is this nice has had sheet metal panels replaced. None of those cars are as straight and perfect body gaps/lines as this car. All original factory welds are on every inch of this car. The sheetmetal is perfectly straight NO waves on this body. The body on this car is flawless top to bottom. The engine compartment is very original with factory paint still present at the cowl area, radiator area, frame area, etc. except for the inner fenders they were repainted when the car was repainted. As for the rest it is very original. The car has NO leaks of any kind anywhere. All the seals are good in the engine, tranny, rear, etc. This car can sit in the garage all winter and when you start her up and pull it out in the spring the floor is perfectly dry. The engine itself except for resealing it, it is also very original in that it is untouched since 1971 when it was put in. The heads were redone to change to unleaded gas. The Carburator was sent out and fully redone and had the Cad color put back on and fully rebuilt. The original master cylinder, original distributor was also redone as well as the original starter were just redone. Also the original smog pump was pulled apart fully cleaned, pulley was repainted and correct hoses and brackets installed. All of the redone parts were just completed and reinstalled. The original brake booster is still present and works fine and still has alot of it's Cad color as well. Now when it came to making the engine compartment look very original and be correct. Correct new hoses(radiator, heater and vacuum), clamps, spark plug wire sheilds, vacuum metal line, distributor vacuum line, spark plug wires, etc were all used. The car even has an orignal side post battery just like the one it came with in 1971. The battery cables are still the originals from 1971, yes they have never been changed and don't need to be. The transmission/bellhousing were taken down and the clutch was fully inspected. A new clutch, pressure plate and throwout Bearing were installed. When putting it all back together I used all correct marked bolts and nuts just like what GM used. The car is like the day it it left the dealership down to the Correct marked Nuts and bolts. The rear was gone over as well and seals and bearings were replaced. 4 new Koni shocks were installed on the car as well. The wheels and tires on the car are the exact ones that came on the car in 1971, they were taken off the car in early 1972 with about 12,000 miles on them and stored away in a climate controlled state. They were taken off to use different wheels and tries. The wheels are all original, all 5 of them. The wheels still have all original paint on them and NEVER were touched to this day. The tires all 5 are all original and never were touched either not even a plug. They have NO dryrot, flatspots, etc. They are in excellant condition and can be used/driven with no issues. The tires have the 8 digit (B9NCJBDL) stamped into each tire on the inside. You can see the spare tire has a good picture of this stamping. This is the original factory stamping. I did get the wheels/tires rebalanced so this is why there are newer weights on them, other than that untouched. The original Jack assembly is still in the trunk. It was also pulled at the time that all 5 wheels and tires were taken off the car about 12,000 miles. the Jack assembly in complete and nothing is missing. Even the shaft still has most the original Gold anodized still intact. The jack has the correct date code on it. The date code is 1B which breaks down to February 1971. All of the Jack assembly is original GM parts and the originals to the car. The original trunk mat is still with the car. It is like new. I had to clean the top a little but it has NO dirt, marks or cuts on it. It was also taken out of the car along with the spare tire and jack assembly at about 12,000 and stored away. You just don't see cars with these items that were stored away and then put back in the car some 36 years later. The inside of the trunk is completely untouched. It has the splatter paint from 1971. I took many pictures showing this, you can see where the splatter paint stops and where the Red Oxide Primer is. This is the way they did it on the cars. Nothing has been touched. You can also see the white lights assemblies inside the trunk are very clean and show no dirt or splatter overspray on them at all because there was no splatter paint put in the trunk since it was done at the factory on the assembly line. The 1st owner wanted a 1971 Z28 with air conditioning. Well anyone who knows 2nd generation Camaros knows that they never made a 1971 Z28 with AC. So it was added on back in 1974-75. A correct factory unit was added to the car along with correct wiring, original hoses, original dash pad, original heater A/C controls, heater box under dash and kickpanels with a/c doors and vacumn lines, etc were put on this car. Everything is still there as it was put on in 1974-75. At the same time original power door locks were also added to the car. The rest of the interior is all original with the only excpeiton being a new carpet was installed when the car got painted back in 2006. Other than that, the entire interior is still untouched ad original to the car from 1971. The seats are incredible! I took a picture to show that the seat tracks are still bare metal and have NO rust on them, hell they are still nice shiney untouched metal from 1971. Not everyone knows that the seat tracks/frames are bare metal and were never painted from the factory and do usually rust over the years but not this car. The cushions in the seats are original and in perfect condition, The upholstry is all original on each seat and it is very soft, plyable with no rips, tears. The headliner, gauges, radio, speakers, seatbelts, glass, shifter, center console, door panels, rear panels, even the GM Floor mats are all original and in perfect condition with no issues. The front and rear bumpers are the original bumpers are were never touched. They are in very good condition. Even the Headlights are the original to the car from 1971. They are Guide (power Beam) and they still work. The tailights and sidemarkers are the original GM as well. The original brightwork was all taken off the car and fully redone to factory specs. So all the brightwork is also all original GM and not aftermarket. NOS parts! The exhaust manifold stovepipes(upper and lower), Exterior doorhandles and all the emblems are NOS not oem repop. It took a little time to locate them all but they look and fit so much better. They are more expensive as well but there is nothing like original GM parts. As for the weatherstripping it is also NOS. The 1st owner bought all the weatherstripping in the 70's from GM and it was stored away in case he would ever need it. It was stored correctly thru the years with no sunlight and in a dry place. He ordered all the weathersrtripping to do the entire car. So when the car was painted it was all used. It is all GM and very soft, plyable and crack free. It fits perfect as only original GM parts do. Now to the drivetrain breakdown The engine block is a correct 4 bolt main casting GM #3970010. The block is correct but is a CE warranty replacment block and is stamped CE225352. Transmission is original to the car and has the casting GM # 3925661. The transmission has the GM # stamp which is P1C17A( 1971 built march 17th M20). The partial vin stamp is also there. It is stamped 1N567604 which matches the cars Vin. This car was ordered with the optional HURST shifter and it is still in the car to this day. The original knob was taken off and changed to the white knob. The original owner changed the original black plain looking knob with this white one back in 1972. The bellhousing and tailshaft on the transmission are also the originals. They have the original GM part numbers and are crack free and the threads were perfect. The carburator is the the original 780 CFM Holly to the car. The stamp on the carb is 3989021 LIST-4801-1 122 which breaks down to 1971 Z28 manual transmission built 2nd week of February 1971. The intake is the original to the car. It is the aluminum winters intake and has the casting GM # which is 3959594. The top plate for the intake is also there and the GM # is 3969836. Many times this is long gone and nobody tries to replace this. The distributor is also the original to the car. It has the GM stamp # of 1112049 and has the date code of 0F22. This breaks down for 1971 Z28 with manual transmission built on july 22, 1970. This built date is early but common and correct for the 1 year only distributor for the 1971 Z28. The cap on the distributor is also the original Delco-Remy cap with patent #2769047. The starter is also original to the car. It is a Delco-Remy. It has the stamp GM # as 1108418 and has the date stamp as 0M22 which brakes down to be correct for 1971 Z28 High performance and built on December 22, 1970. The spark plugs and plug wires are correct. The spark plugs are NOS originals part# 5613302 and the plug wires are Delco-Packard exact duplicates that came on the car in 1971. They are even date coded for the 1-Q which breaks down to 1st half production year of 1971. The exhaust manifolds seam to be original as well. It seams they ue the exact same LH exhaust manifold which has the casting GM # 3989041 and I have seen the RH have 2 differnt GM #'s this one is 3946826. They both have the casting date as K1570. This breaks down to both exhaust manifolds are original to the car and have the build date as November 15th 1970. The RH exhaust manifold even has 2 NOS stovepipes the upper and lower. These are NOS and not repops. The lower stovepipe is the bigger one and the part GM# is 338473 and the upper is GM # 338471 both are riveted to the exhaust manifold. Near all of these are long gone, I took the time to hunt down 2 NOS ones and reinstalled them. The rear end in the car is correct and original as well. It is a heavy Duty 10 bolt and has the suffix stamp of CG. This breaks down to 3.73. This was the standard rear axle ratio in a 1971 Z28. The 1971 Camaro Z28 is the last year for the Muscle car. After 71 the Muscle looked the same until 1974 for many makes and models but the Horsepower was gone in 1972.
