Offered for sale at auction with a reasonable reserve price is this very rare and collectible 1958 Mercedes Benz 220 S Sunroof Coupe. These are referred to as 'Ponton' cars, which has to do with the front suspension subframe design The vehicle is in very good overall condition. The paint is outstanding as is the interior. There are very few miles on the stong running rebuilt engine. All other mechanical components are also in very good condition. This is an accident free and rust free California car that we have owned since the 1980's. These 220 S Coupes are very hard to come by, especially with the sunroof option. My research indicates only 1251 of these 220 S coupes were built and only 111 were made with the sunroof option, of which only a few are in the United States. This is a very rugged and reliable automobile and will make a great addition as an occasional driver or even as a second full time driver. This vehicle has a four speed transmission with the innovative Hydrak clutch option which works well. The clutch actuates automatically as the driver moves the gear shift lever. There is no clutch pedal. It is my understanding that over the years most Hydrak cluthes have been converted to a regular clutch and a pedal installed. Mechanically these coupes are identical to their sedan counterparts, so parts availability is not an issue.This vehicle glides effortlessly and quietly at freeway speeds.These cars were adventurous in styling and very luxurious for their time.
