Vehicle Detail

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 This 1986 Subaru BRAT is a true survivor that has been driven sparingly over its 25 years with only 99,400 miles. Originally a California car, it has been in the hands of a very responsible owner since 1999 who treated it well and never allowed it to see snow. The interior is exceptional given the year. The dash pad is perfect. The original radio and factory Clarion cassette deck are still installed. The tape deck is non-fuctional. The engine compartment is clean. The radiator has been replaced at some point in its life. The front half shafts are near new. The bed is very nice showing light use over the years. The t-tops (Subaru calls it the Subaru Fun Roof) work fine and are in great shape with no leaks or problems of any kind. The engine starts instantly and runs perfectly. The clutch is a little vague and transmission a bit clunky but they work well - pretty typical for this generation of Subaru. The truck is complete down to the factory tool kit and owners manual. The BRAT is all original with a few additions. A BYB 3-inch lift kit has been installed for a more aggressive stance. The rear brakes have been converted to disc brakes taken from an '88 GL-10. I can tell you it makes the truck much easier to get in and out of! A Subaru center console/armrest has been added too. The 13 inch wheels were traded for a set of really rare O.E. 14 inch aluminum rims. There is a collection of new extra parts included: - 4 new calipers, thermostat, 2 ball joints, 2 tie rod ends, brakes pads, a radiator fan switch and a vapor separator. Used parts include: a complete power window setup, steel skid plate, an extra air cleaner, a set of correct 13 inch wheels and lug nut set, a locking fiberglass topper (with keys) and dash pad cover. Is the truck perfect? No. It is the nicest Subaru Brat I have ever seen - but it isn't perfect. Given the age, on a scale of ten I'd say this is a 8.5 or a 9. There are a few dents in it, all of them very minor. There is some rust - but not much. I've taken photos of the worst rust spots - they are the last few pictures. Like almost all the 1.8 of this generation, it likes to drip oil. Not a large leak, but it does let you know where it's been. It's coming from the front of the engine. It could use an alignment, but it drives well. The steering wheel doesn’t point straight, and it has a slight drift to the right. I suspect the passenger side ball joint is worn, but I’m not sure. Two new joints are included. There is a small tear in the drivers seat bolster. The truck in the photos and the YouTube video is exactly how it looks everyday - I didn't even wash it for its photo shoot. Please, if you have questions feel free to ask. Questions - Here are some answers: What do you mean by vague? Well, the clutch in an '86 Subaru is cable operated, and it feels more like the pedal on an old tractor then a car of today. The clutch works perfectly - It just feels different. Likewise the transmission it isn't the slick shifting type you find in cars today. If you drove a Model T, then a '53 Oldsmobile, then a '07 Volkswagen you would think the first two were junk - but they’re not. They're just old technology. What is the rust picture? That is a little extension of metal that reinforces the rocker panel from the underside. It is right about where the driver's left heel would rest. The photo after that is the same shot on the passenger side - it's perfect. The driver's side can and should be repaired. It will require some fabricating, welding and maybe some swearing. It is the worst rust on the car, it will be an easy job. Let it go and go and you're going to turn this sweetheart into a rust bucket like every other mid 80’s Subaru in the world. Will it make the trip to Texas, South Carolina, Alaska, Madagasgar... Yes. You can leave today for anywhere there is a road, and many places that there aren’t roads. Do not let me telling you every little thing I can think of about the car convince you it's a piece of crap. It is not. It's beautiful. It will still go 80mph down the interstate, and still crawl up most hills in low range - which leads me to: How is the 4WD / does it have four-low? The four wheel drive works great. Push in clutch, pull lever, go. For four-low just pull lever higher, then go. Is that the original mileage? Absolutely. Look at the pictures then ask yourself - how many miles does it look like it has on it? Is there a picture with the topper? and Is there a video? Yes, but ebay stopped letting me add pictures when I got to 24. A video can be seen here What kind of fuel mileage does it get? I’m getting about 24 in the city, without the topper. Thanks again, and good luck.On Dec-09-11 at 11:52:46 PST, seller added the following information: Another update: Here are two more pictures. The first is the BRAT with the topper on it, and the second is to show you the oil leak I mentioned. This is how much it dripped after being driven around town then sitting still for 18 hours. After about a day it stops dripping altogether.
