VO9-21 1918 Paige Essex 6-55 Series 4-Door Convertible Touring Limousine Built by Paige-Detroit Motor Car Company I even gave a ride to President JFK! 52,423 Odometer Miles Showing This Paige is believed to be possibly the only one like it remaining. The present owner was told 'this Paige' could be worth $400,000 Hi There! In case you are scratching your head and wondering: I am an unrestored, original 1918 Paige of the 6-55 Series, an Essex 4 Door Convertible Touring Limousine. Back in the day they dubbed me The most beautiful car in America. And unless you're older than dirt, you are not going to remember too much about me. For the 40 years he owned me - about as long as he was in Congress - former U.S. Congressman Ken Gray of Illinois provided long, loving care. For over 20 of those years, I was on display in his Presidential Museum in West Frankfort, Illinois. Now, I am not one to brag, but I am a rare piece of history - and kind of famous too. Over the years, I have had some pretty famous passengers. On November 22, 1960, I gave President John Kennedy a ride in my back seat to the Harrisburg, Illinois Court House along with Governor Otto Kerner, Senator Paul Douglas, Secretary of State Paul Powell, with Congressman Gray driving. And I have a letter and photo from him to prove it. My, what a day! Then, years later in one of many parades I have been in, I gave a crew of Astronauts a long ride. They were more excited with this than their space ride. As I look back, I realize I have been a Virtual Time Machine. I have seen the end of World War I, the roaring twenties, the Great Depression, Al Capone, World War II, the Kennedy assassination - sadly, in another limousine exactly three years after our ride - the Korean and Vietnam wars, the baby boomers, Man walking on the moon, the Challenger explosion, the world Trade Center Towers falling, and the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. By the way, God Bless all of you Veterans! Finally, my big break came and here I am - Living the Florida Lifestyle and loving every minute of it. You can tell I am not a Southerner, but I got here as soon as I could. My present owners, Dr. Walt and Wanda Aiken are Florida natives. And because they are proud to be genuine Florida Crackers, they keep trying to make me run on grits and gravy. Maybe one day. Since arriving in Marion County in January, 2009, I keep getting all gussied up for my life here - just like most of you did when you came to Florida. Dr. Walt is a Chiropractor so he makes sure that my frame stays straight. He and his wife Wanda have big plans for me, like sharing me with others whenever they can. My present colors are original Paige royal blue with black fenders, and that is my original carpet in the rear passenger compartment. Hey, when you are in your nineties, will you be as rare and look as good as I do now - as is :) Just bragging a little more: Note my solid wooden spoke wheels. Basically, I'm still mostly all original. My engine is the original flathead inline 6 cylinder, with a 1-barrel carburetor, and it still runs strong. Years ago, my original vacuum fuel pump was replaced by an electric fuel pump which definitely made me run better, churning out a mighty 29.4 horse power. Let me throw in some Paige history here: My original designer, Frederick Osgood Paige, 1863 - 1935, made much of my body style with a rounded rear end. Ladies, don not be jealous. This design allowed exceptionally more comfort for my rear seat passengers than any other car of that day, along with the unique pointed radiator style. This is why the Paige automobile was dubbed The most beautiful car in America. The Paige-Detroit Motor Car Company built Paige automobiles between 1909 and 1927. Sales topped 30,000 for most years, and peak production of 43,500 vehicles occurred in 1923. When new, I sold for $1,775.00. Ah, for the good old days! Of all these automobiles produced, I'm proud to be a rare, well-preserved survivor, and the only one like me known to exist anywhere. My preservation was helped by the 20 + years I spent in Congressman Ken Grays Presidential Museum. And now, Dr. Walt and Wanda are still carrying on my preservation. So, enjoy looking, reminiscing, and stepping back in history! There are 2 magnetic signs included, 1 for each side with the text above Doc made ABOUT THIS 1918 PAIGE CONVERTIBLE So Well maintained and preserved! The owner, we will call him Doc, has taken extremely good care of this very special historical and vintage auto by hand detailing, polishing and doing some touch up items like having the original interior carpet professionally cleaned. Doc loves sharing the history and information about his Paige and was quick to offer to show us exactly how to get her engine running, revved up and ready to go. If you click over to our videos that open in a new browser window, you will see how to place the car in neutral, pump the pedal a few times, turn the key and press the starter switch on the floorboard. You then have ignition. He said the steering is easy once the Paige is started and it is moving. Spark advance is still functional. The EXTERIOR The large spotlight, in effect a search light by the Kilborn-Sauer Company. Perched on the driver side, its mirror bears the patina of ages, with no chips or cracks. It is a beautiful showpiece as is, and with some additional wiring can be functional again as a light. Split Windshield The Paige offered its own form of natural air conditioning in its day with its split windshield that tilts outward to bring the fresh air and breeze in for the driver and passengers. Diamond shaped tread on this original tire. This one is hard as a rock and can't be driven on, but sure looks pretty perched in front of the gas tank just so. Note too, the single tail light, as was common back in 1918. Present colors are the Paige royal blue with black fenders. Very little scratching. And this delightful antiquated writing from a Paige Reference manual that accompanies the purchase of this car: When washing, use water only, excepting that in cases where it is necessary to remove grease, pure castile soap may be used. When water from a hose is used, the nozzle should be removed and the water flowed gently upon the body. A piece of cloth should not be used, and it should be remembered when using a sponge that every particle of grit or sand which clings to it will scratch the varnish. (200+ photos, make sure to see them all, and the multiple videos. YOU WILL BE SO AMAZED BY ITS MUSEUM QUALITY Stored 75+ Years And Runs Like A Top The Gray Presidential Museum, located just north of West Frankfort on Illinois Route 37, was home to over 10,000 artifacts, and right in front of the President's Wall of Information you would find the Paige proudly perched. Congressman Gray was a life long promoter whose purpose for the museum was to provide a glimpse of local, state and national history to Southern Illinois school children, community members, and tourists to the region. The all wooden door frames (painted black) and wood floors with their linoleum covering have been kept dry and remain in excellent condition. The floor panels can be removed to gain access to the Paige for servicing. On the floor are located the transmission clutch and starter button; the throttle is also located on the floor board. The old throttle on the wooden steering wheel is no longer active but shows the impressive technology that was available when this Paige was manufactured. Factory installed transmission lock (with key), security system located on the floor. Doc does have the key but has not used it for fear the gear may stick, or that he may be unable to remove the key. So this lock assembly has not been tested. This mechanism is all original equipment. The POWERTRAIN 6 cylinder, two valves each, 1 barrel carburetor, and get ready: 29.4 Powerful Powerful Horses! (NACC rating) An electric fuel pump has been added. There are many more detailed pictures of the engine that you won't want to miss in our Photo Gallery (opens in a new window so you can easily get back to this page for, as they say, the rest of the story on this original piece of Americana in beautiful running condition). . Under the hood was covered with surface grease and dirt when Doc first got her. Doc had the engine professionally steam cleaned and he painted the original engine. The little cups in between the spark plugs are primer cups and in cooler weather you can add a little gas into these cups and the engine will fire up a little quicker. Ahooga Ahooga! The original Ooga horn has been rebuilt by a mechanic in New York known to be one of the last Ooga horn experts specializing in rebuilding these old gems. Got garage? She's 15.5 feet long, 7.5 feet wide, with a straight frame, nice paint, and strong-running engine. The running boards appear original, with possibly an updated material. Here on the outside panel above the door sill you can see one of the six ports that allow easy lube maintenance of the suspension system. When viewing the undercarriage you see that there are two locations on each side for oil to go to keep the suspension springs lubricated. The Paiges undercarriage looks really clean and in order with just a drop or two of oil on the showroom floor. Battery 6 volt system , with an 8 volt battery. By the way, the wheel base is 127 inches. Matching motor number 10D76314 brass plate that reads Continental Motors Company, Detroit Muskegon, Mich. USA. The engine carries a manufacture date of November 13, 1917, and this Paige is titled as a 1918 automobile. Note the admonishment right on the plate to never use cheap oil! On another humorous note our good doc challenged fellow Floridian Don Garletts to a drag race with this Paige and boasted to The King of Drag Racing he would be happy to give Mr. Garletts' famed Swamp Rat a head start, however the race to date has not taken place! Original chassis number shown 75952; motor number 76314, and reads Paige-Detroit Motor Car Co. Detroit, Mich, USA. This is a rare collectable antique with John F. Kennedy history. 3 speed manual transmission or 4 speed counting your reverse. Pretty straightforward and simple back in the day. Do not miss this very special time in automotive history. Pan, tubing, wires, plugs, all solid and intact. Can you believe the condition of the wood flooring! Same with the wheels below. So well preserved. The wheel shown just below is the one out of four that still bears the black paint on the steel cap emblem. The others show PAIGE, but have no paint, just shiny and embossed with the name. Original wheels made out of real wood with the Paige emblems. This car features rear brakes only. In our videos you can see the lining and the bands and how they can be adjusted. Lots of life left on the tires due to the Paige being showcased in a museum for quite a few years and off the road so not being used. Tires are still available and made in two or three places within the USA. Doc wants you to know that there is a very slow leak in the left rear tire, but that it's so slow and small, the tire shop couldn't find it. It has been on our indoor showroom floor for over a month, and the tire has not seemed to lose any air yet. Here you can see the protruding shape of the emblems, as well as the company name, PAIGE, sans paint. Let's talk about the gas and gas tank. The twenty-gallon tank was flushed out last year - roughly 30 miles ago. Doc A. also wanted you to know that it's very important for the health of the Paige to use a gasoline additive to put lead back into the fuel, and another to neutralize the ethanol. You can see here the many threads for making sure the cap doesn't come loose enroute. You can also see in the photo below that where the cap broke off in no way affects the functionality of the unit. The INTERIOR Instrument Panel and Foot Pedals Speedometer does work. The present owner, when he procured this Paige, set the gauge to 0 has been set and now shows 52 miles. This Paige has been trailer queened everywhere in almost two-and-a-half years. The instrument panel does have oil and amp gauge currently not connected. Original choke and also an added heat-activated choke are also present but not currently connected. Starter and accelerator on the floor boards look unusual and definitely unlike what we are accustomed to nowadays. Simulated wood grained dash and interior dash light that does need a bulb to illuminate the gauges. Where the key is placed into the Paige is where the light switch is located to illuminate your parking lights and head lamps.Only 52,423 miles showing on what appears to be original odometer. Doc flipped the trip odometer back when he got the Paige so he could show the few miles he drove - fifty-two to be exact! Do note that the tip of the handle for the headlight and taillights has been broken off sometime in the past ninety-three years, but is still operational by simply grasping its circumference and rotating. You can see this demonstrated in the videos when Doc was showing us how trouble-free it is to start the engine in this Paige The good Doctor A. as another caretaker of this Paige along its life journey has taken extremely good care of his very special historical and vintage 'patient' by hand detailing, polishing and doing some touch up items like having the original interior carpet professionally cleaned. Some kind tubing, perhaps for inflating tires. As we were pulling it from its door pocket it became resistant and we became concerned about dislodging something important and so felt it better to let the new owners have a closer look. We were unable to determine its specific purpose for the Paige. The two center seats in the limo fold down, then forward to tuck away into their respective slots, making room for passengers to easily enter the rear big bench seating. This also accommodates the transport of other items besides passengers. Plenty of floor space showcases the original interior carpet still in fine condition. The foot rest and passenger handle bars pictured in the photo gallery are reminders of days gone by with safety in mind, before the creation of seatbelts. The interior light illuminates the passenger area. All the finest specifications were included in this loved 1918 Paige - including, of course, the crank in the front, as shown below. And plenty more photos and details follow below, so keep your mouse handy and scroll on! Vehicle Information VIN: 10D76314--- Title# 102270875--- Weight: 2800 (showing on title) Year: On brass original factory plate, Nov 1917 - Titled as 1918 Paige Odometer: 52,423 Showing on odometer (93 years old - True Miles Unknown) IMPORTANT NOTE: The present owner of this unique antique vehicle, because of its documented history with President John F. Kennedy, has agreed to only sell this vehicle to a purchaser within the United States, that it remain in the U.S., possibly, hopefully in a museum. We recommend you base your decisions on what you see in the 200 plus photos, and do take our vehicle video tour and read the text in the ad description completely as many details are included. We are thorough and detailed, yet there still may be questions you have. So as you read through the entire ad, why not make note or two of any questions of particular interest to you, and we will get you the answers in short order. We are not by any means historians or experts on collectables or the Paige, so bidders and the end purchaser need to be. Comments - Knobs, levers, headlamps, wipers, tail lights, radio, etc have been checked by Team Vehltor and are in proper working condition, no worries! (If we found something it is described below in red text.) Interior: Exceptionally well preserved. Carpet in the rear is believed to be original, as is all wood in this vehicle, door sill plates, as well as many other aspects. See photo below. Please review the text description for known details about condition of the interior. Make sure to see the 200+ photos in our photo gallery. Exterior: Exceptionally clean and deemed mostly all original. See photo below. Please review the text description for more details about condition of the exterior. Make sure to see the 200+ photos in the photo gallery. Mechanically: See Vehltor Virtual Vehicle Tour to hear engine starting and accompany Team Vehltor on a test drive, where you experience this vehicle out on the road. Nothing else known is needed other than what is listed in the text description, and shown in the photos and videos in this ad. Please review the text description for other details. Make sure to see the many photos in photo gallery (click on Photo Gallery image located just below). We found the four items above to be areas that may benefit from a bit of tlc on this ninety-three year old. (Any others we further noted are shown in individual photos throughout this listing and in the photo gallery.) Broken off handle on the still-working switch; a few small tears or pokes in the soft top (which by the way is still supple and can be raised and lowered); a 'petrified' spare tire that can't be used but looks awesome on the rear of the car; the one and only tail light|brake light on this model has a cracked lense; a crazing in the paint on the black fenders only, with very little on the rear fenders. This does not repeat in the rest of the blue body.We tried really hard to find hard rust on the body or swelled or chipped wood on the undercarriage, but alas, came up short there. This is one solid antique limo whose excellent 93-year-old shape makes many a jaw drop! VEHLTOR TEAM TEST DRIVE COMMENTS Are you kidding? There was NO WAY we were about to take even the slightest chance of harming this stupendous antique, no matter how solid her tires, how fantastic her engine sounds and all her bells and whistles intact! We did capture her being tucked away the day she came to us, so in our videos you can see her backing up in reverse and moving forward into her berth. She now sits in our main showroom where she'll stay until the lucky winning bidder comes to claim her. What a treat! If it is 'commonplace', it stamps him as a man of little or no discrimination. If it is 'gaudy,' it proclaims his bad taste and lack of refinement. As a consequence, well bred people insist upon a compromise between these two extremes. They demand individuality in their motor cars -- but it is the quiet, unpretentious individuality that characterizes a Patrician the world over. They demand 'smartness' in the motor cars -- but it is the smartness of exquisite design, luxurious appointment and finished detail. In a word, they demand just such a car as the Paige -- The Most Beautiful Car in America. Stand up of JFK, American flags, three framed information pictures come with this Paige And this, four months later, from The Literary Digest, page 72, for November 17, 1917: The first appeal of the Paige enclosed models is, of course, their exquisite beauty and distinctiveness. No other cars on the market are quite so smart or so refreshingly individual. But there is another most important point of superiority that should not be overlooked. The new Paige power plant is, we sincerely believe, the most efficient cold weather motor that has ever been developed. Three remarkable engineering features eliminate all 'starting troubles' and insure perfect combustion in the cylinders no matter how cold the weather may be. Ask our dealer to tell you about these features in detail. They are found in combination only with the Paige. Detroit And a half year later they were saying this, from The Literary Digest for May 18, 1918: The Motor Car is one of the most efficient Time and Labor-saving devices that has ever been developed. For this reason it has been adopted as standard field equipment by wide-awake executives in practically every line of business. The stern necessities of war have placed a premium on our national productivity -- and the motor car has demonstrated that it is economically sound as a producing factor. By conserving Time it multiplies the usefulness of man. By conserving energy, it fosters the broadest and fullest expression of his creative ability. The Paige is merely one of America's high grade motor cars, but we are proud of the part that it is playing in this National Crisis. In no small measure we realize our own responsibility, and the various Paige models will continue to merit the respect and confidence which have been so generously reposed in them. More advertising from The Literary Digest for August 10, 1918: A Message to 50,000 Paige Owners This summer it is your duty to 'stay off the railroads,' for the good and sufficient reason that Uncle Sam needs them. Stick to the highways for both long and short trips -- plan an automobile vacation. Do this and you will release a vast amount of equipment for the movement of troops and supplies. Remember that you are a better business man -- a more helpful citizen -- because you own a Paige car. Use that car morning, noon and night. Call upon its speed and power to meet the demands of these tremendously active days. Depend upon it absolutely -- because it's a Paige And this Paige comes with an original Paige-Detroit REFERENCE BOOK, a Paige owner's reference. How cool is that! And it's barely yellowed. You would never guess that it was printed ninety-three years ago. Do note that it references Model Fifteen-Nineteen five passenger touring car, and also Six-42 and Six-44. Since our Paige in this listing is model Essex Six-55, seven passenger touring convertible, some of the parts numbers will be different, such as the ahooga horn, as well as some of the specifics. You can see more of the book(s) in the photo gallery. The NOW Local Newspaper Creates Excitement Ocala Star Banner, Monday, May 2, 2011 By Andy Fillmore Correspondent (transcript from article: ocala. com/article/20110501/ARTICLES/110509978/1001/news01?p=1&tc=pg) Belleview Man Hopes To Pass On Piece Of Automotive History JFK once rode in Walter Aiken Jr.s 1918 Paige Essex Touring 6-55 Limousine Belleview - Walter Aiken Jr. has decided to put his 1918 Paige Essex Touring 6-55 Limousine on the market to pass on a mixture of Americana and automotive history. The car was originally touted The Most Beautiful Car in America President John F. Kennedy rode in this car on Nov. 22, 1960, three years to the day before his assassination, while on his campaign stop at the Harrisburg III., courthouse with Congressman Ken Gray, Aiken said, pointing to a photo documenting the occasion. Aiken has a letter on Congress of the United Sates letterhead and signed by Gray, testifying to Kennedys having ridden in the vehicle, and Grays personalized license plate, marked 'Retired Congress, KGRAY, Illinois, Land of Lincoln, 2005-06. The car was stored for about 20 years in Grays museum, he said. 'Due to the cars legacy , I may put a stipulation that it remain in the U.S., possibly, hopefully in a museum,' Aiken said. Aiken, 76, purchased the blue seven-passenger limousine convertible in 2008 off eBay because it was unique one of a kind car. He described the well preserved vehicle as 'original and unrestored. The Paige was the second collectable car acquired and then sold by Aiken and his wife of 57 years, Wanda. The first was a 1959 Nash Metropolitan sub-compact. 'The Nash was lots of fun, Wanda Aiken said. The Aikens have on put 52 miles on the Paige, which is normally transported by trailer rather than cruising at its typical 30 mph speed. The 93 year old car, which cost $3,230 new, has a brass plaque on the 29.4 horsepower in-line six cylinder engine that admonishes the owner to 'never use cheap oil' The engine was manufactured by Continental Motor Company and is dated Nov. 13, 1917. It features electric starting and small valves on each cylinder for gas priming to ease cold weather starts. Unique touches include an on board tire inflator and a key lock on the floor gear shift, perhaps an early foreshadowing of anti-theft devices. The owners manual carries the caution that it is a very dangerous practice to check any part of the car with a lighted match. The manual includes a 90-day warranty against defects in workmanship and material' that would have expired before prohibition (1919) and before women could vote in the U.S. (1920). Aiken is selling the car through Vehltor, a new business on North Magnolia Avenue that has handled vehicles such as a 'lightly armored' Hum-vee, a London taxi and a modernized 1948 Lincoln Continental. The appraiser is still checking on the Paige because its so unique, 'Vehltor owner Tom Burke said. When asked if it was difficult to let the Paige go, Aiken responded: Never love anything that does not love back.
