Vehicle Detail
1987 Volkswagen Jetta Turbo Diesel - Converted to Bi-fuel WVO in 2004 Runs well with no issues and hardly any rust. I drove it to Orlando and Cincinnati from DC a couple months ago on WVO. The car is ready to drive home, so if you want to pick it up and drive it home that of-course is fine. Engine and Turbo rebuilt at 240,000. Currently has 317000 miles on it. Was bi-fuel converted (WVO, Diesel) at 250000 miles in 2004 Body is in good shape but paint is in poor shape. This is my 'work on the house' car. It has a trailer hitch and it has made hundreds of trip to Home Depot pulling a loaded trailer, and I still use it for that. The Good Extremely tight turning radius is great for the city. I have replaced just about everything in this car over the last six years; injector pump, radiator, timing belt, Freon, all belts, water pump, brake calipers, fuel lines, both half axles and boots, etc... WVO system is proven over tens of thousands of miles. Built and designed by a local engineer, it was a pain in the butt to install but works great. Peppy around town, but a little sluggish on the highway. Will do 95+ mph, but takes a while to get there. AC pumps cold, heater pumps hot Replaced the radio with a CD player Exhaust is solid, tires are good, brakes are good. Easy gets 42+ mpg Has a trailer hitch and light hookup. No cracks in the glass 4 wheel disc brakes Full size spare tire. The Bad The passenger side door doesn't open from the outside. This apparently is common and the new handle costs like $25, but I like the added security and never replaced. Paint is in bad but functional shape. Sunroof leaks because gasket is old and I didn't replace it, doesn't seem to hurt anything except occasional wet butt. Car smells a little like old cooking oil Tachometer never worked since I bought car in 2004, didn't fix it, didn't need it. Carpets inside have been cleaned but are still dirty Like all diesels it burns a little oil, might have to add a quart every 3-4 months (or might not) The windshield washer pump switch works only sometimes. The plastic tab that activates the switch is bent. The Waste Vegetable Oil (WVO) system The system has two fuel tanks. The factory 13 gallon OEM tank is setup for WVO and there is a 7 gallon jug tank in the trunk for diesel. A 6 port fuel selector switch in the car switches between the two tanks. The car must be started and shut-down on diesel. Only after it is warmed up can you use WVO. The filter for the WVO system is in the trunk. It is a aluminum filter body with a water separator bowl and has hot water hoses wrapped around it. The hot water comes from the engine. The WVO passes through the filter and then enters a hose-in-a-hose configuration. It passes in this way all the way to the engine. The super hot WVO then is ready to be injected. WVO used to be very easy to get, but now it is hard to find because restaurants can sell it. For the last 3 months I have mostly run it on diesel and commercial biodiesel. One more note: I drive this car all the time and would drive it a thousand miles tomorrow if I needed too. It always starts within a few seconds. I have no reason to expect it to break down anytime soon. That being said, its an old car and I would not let my daughter drive it home at 2:00 AM.
