Vehicle Detail
1970 Dodge Challenger R/T Hard Top. 440, 727 Auto, Dana 60, Manual Steering and Brakes, Tinted glass, Dual painted sport mirrors. Vehicle originally was a California car ordered with the A66 340 package and A/C. It had already been properly converted to big block (K frame swap) by the time I got it 10 years ago. Taken down to the shell 4 years ago for body and paint work, as well as everything else. Body and paint work was doen by a very talented friend of mine. Everything else was done by me personally ( I am an ASE master certified mechanic by the way).Paint is FJ6 (green go/sassy grass green) with a good clear coat. All of the car is original sheet metal except for two front floor patches that were installed during body work, and driver's side fender, which was replaced the original, which had been tinkered with before. car is looks great, and as you can see, the paint is lovely. Body/ Interior: Glass is all original (factory tinted glass), still has A/C heater box, which is fully functional. buckets and rear seat are out of a '72 rallye. Absolutely everything on the interior has been replaced except for the bucket seat covers. Dash features A custom gauge cluster I made myself with 5" speedometer (160mph) and tach, as well as 2 5/8" fuel, temp fuel pressure, oil pressure , and volt meter gauges. Car also has a CD Stereo, with a 3 speaker dash (40 watts on each end, and a dual pod 40 watt (2 speakers) in the center, and two 120 watt Boston Speakers in the package tray in the rear. All door hinges have been rebuilt, hood hinges rebuilt, All window regulators rebuilt and properly adjusted, all weatherstripping replaced, All exterior lighting lenses replaced with reproductions, all lighting works, All three wiring harnesses also replaced with reproductions. And any modifications to them have been properly done. Drivetrain: Drivetrain was built around and to handle a 500" stroker. which was in it for the 6000 some miles since the car was last torn down. That engine was removed last year, and replaced with a new absolutely factory build 375hp 440. The engine does have the upgrade of a high volume oil pump (80psi cold) and a double roller timing set. Everything else around it, and in the rest of the drivetrain is still of super heavy duty aftermarket nature for its former 500. Ignition System consists of MSD pro billet distributor that has been recurved from factory setting, Mallory Hifire VI Digital Ignition control module, Mallory Pro master 65,000 volt epoxy filled coil, and hand built Taylor 7.5mm plug wires. Electrical system consists of proper, custom conversion to GM 1-wire alternator (this particular unit is 80 amp), with the battery properly relocated to the trunk. There is also a removable aluminum plate/firewall behind the rear seat to be safety compliant for drag racing with trunk mounted battery. Battery switch located on tail panel. Fuel system contists of factory tank (that was clean as a whistle to start with), replacement 3/8" pickup and new 3/8 hard lines all the way up to the engien compartment. Fuel pump is a brand new factory replacement. Filter is new as well. Thermoquad carb is factory 800cfm factory 440 unit that has also been recently rebuilt and works perfectly. Throttle and Transmission Kickdown actuation is handled by Lokar Cables. Air induction comes via custom cold air only setup utilizing a ramairbox.com air box with dual 4" diamter inlets running neoprene hosing out to the radiator core support. The filter within the box is a 14x3" K&N. The cold air setup really does work its own little wonders. It it more efficient in traffic, and on the freeway. Much better at the track. And if you turn the car into a stiff head wind it gets delightfully louder as ram air tends to do. Cooling system consists of a 28" Summit brand aluminum radiator with 7 blade clutch fan (brand new fan clutch btw), and fan shroud. Trans cooler is a super heavy duty aluminum unit that is actually designed for a Later model Ford F350 Diesel Pickup. Engine has new 440 source aluminum water pump housing and aluminum water pump. Exhaust consists of Hooker super Comp 1 7/8" primary, 3" collector headers that are ceramic coated. These flow into a custom/hand built 3" dual exhaust system with an H pipe, 3" cutouts behind the header collectors (with electric Cutouts on them), going to 3" stainless steel magnaflow mufflers all ending at Stainless steel 3" replacement R/T package exhaust tips. Transmission is a Custom Pat Blais built 727 unit with a custom modified valve body to shift 800rpm higher at full throttle, factory mopar hemi package11" 2800rpm torque converter, kevlar bands, 7 installed clutch plates, billet steel front drum, bolt in sprague, and a 1 quart deeper than factory trans-go pan. Driveshaft is a custom built aluminum unit, guarded by a Mancini Racing Bolt to trans cross member Driveshaft safety loop. U joints are also new, solid construction units, with rear U joint being super heavy duty spicer 1350 size. Axle is Custom built Doctor Diff unit built to B-body measurements, with Sox & Martin style adjustable pinion snubber. Internals are 3.90:1 ratio ring and pinion, Rebuilt factory style limited slip, sealed axle bearings, and Yukon Axle shafts with new wheel studs. Suspension was rebuilt front and back at the same time the body work was done. All bushings on front suspension are factory replacment rubber style. Torsion bars are factory 440 diameter units, and struts rods have been replaced with steel adjustable units. Rear springs are espo brand Factory Hemi package factory height replacements (6 and 7 leaves). Rear spring bushings are polyeurethane mounting Doctor Diff 1" per side relocation front and rear hangers to mount the B body dimension axle (also created 2" more tire room per side between the different flange and perch locations). Shocks are gas charged replacements up front, and rear shocks are Rancho RX9000 6 way adjustable units. They adjust with a knob from super firm (6) to supersoft (1). basicly 6 feels like air shocks, and 1 feels like drag shocks. 4-5 drive perfect on the street. Front sway bar is factory unit with poly bushings. Steering Box is a real live MP over the counter T/A replacement fast ratio manual steering box. 16:1 ratio in perfect working order. Steers much more easily and nicer on the street than you would think if you have never driven a faster ratio than the standard 28:1 box yourself. The improved road feel over the same ratio power box is second to none as well. Car also has Mopar Performace Bolt in subframe connectors that have been welded in. Brakes are likewise heavily and properly upgraded. Rear Brakes are factory 11"x2" finned rear drum units that were absolutely brand new (including drums) with the axle. Front brakes are 11.75" diameter Late B body police car (73-78) package disc brake brakes with pin style calipers. Both front brake hoses and rear brake hose have been replaced with braided steel units. System is headed by a 1 1/8" bore MP aluminum master cylinder. Whole system runs silicon fluid throughout. This car with its upgraded manual braking system literally stops twice as good and fast as my father's '70 440 six-pack challenger with rebuilt factory power disc brakes. Wheels and tires: Wheels are factory 3 piece (trim ring equipped) 15x7" magnum 500's. The rear wheels were custom widened to 15x9" at some point. The tires are 100% absolutely brand new reproduction day two style polyglass units. Front tires are Mickey Thompson Indy Profile F70-15's, and rear tires are Coker Pro-Trac N50-15's. And yes the rear tires fit perfectly in the wheel tubs without even coming close to rubbing anywhere. This is thanks to the custom widened wheels, the B body dimension axle, and the wheel lips having been nicely rolled some decades ago. And they look beautiful in there as well. 28x12.50R15 Sicks on 15x7's have also fit in there perfectly before with the same axle. The poly tires on the car right now literally have about 1 mile on them. And they ride and handle great as well actually. That about covers everything. Except that the motor mounts are Mighty Mount brand unbreakable mounts (rubber with internal locks) both sides, and the drivers side also has a schumacher torque strap securing everything. All of the stainless and aluminum trim was also re-polished when the paint and body work were done. Oh, and as you can see, the car has a T/A package duck bill spoiler on it. It had a poor quality fiberglass replacement one on it when I bought it, and I replaced it with a proper high quality plastic reproduction (as they are supposed to be) of a factory one when the body work was done. It looks great on the car and also gives it a unique look over every other car out there. You could buy them over the counter at the dealership in 70 and 71 as well actually. This is a great car that I put immeasurable amounts of work, time and love into. It fires right up without even touching the throttle, handles, and brakes vastly better than your average E-body, drives smooth and swiftly, and garners more attention than a Lamborghini. Give her a good, new home and driver her like she was made to do. Buyer to cover and handle shipping. I also forgot to mention that it has a new High torque mini starter, and the bumpers were rechromed at the same time as the body work was done, and every bit of interior sheet metal (floors, ceiling, behind door panels, package tray, etc)was also covered with dynamat sound deadener at that time as well. The trunk is also as nice as the rest of the car. And the trunk mounted battery is a Gell cell in a weatherproof battery box secured by J bolts. *A further Note: This particular vehicle also happens to be the 1970 Dodge challenger that was used to render the '70 Challenger for the Microsoft X-Box racing Game "Forza Motorsport 3". This all came to be as a result of the occasion of a senior member of the developing team at microsoft who were working on the game literally doing his best to chase me down on the freeway one night a few years ago having seen me blast by him while I was giving a friend of mine a joy ride. Apparently they had been looking for a car to use locally, but being programmer types, did not know personally many in the local hot rod scene. The Interior shots for the car in the game were rendered off of that of my father's '70 convertible, as the lack of a roof made it easier to get visibility for their rendering cameras, and his car also still had its factory ralley dash. The car is for sale locally as well, and I thus reserve the right to end the auction early due to private sale activity. The car has been Re-Listed on here due to the winner of the previous auction claiming poverty and not paying for the vehicle for a month after winning it.
