Continental Mark II - Introductory Unit (relisted due to my incorrectly embedding the videos below)This gorgeous car is 100% original and authentic EXCEPT it has had the top removed. The restoration has taken over 3 years but I must sell it due to my losing my job. This is the ultimate expression of '50s styling and is a tribute to the only 2 convertible Mark IIs ever produced. Perfect for driving or showing. The engine PURRRS. Really sounds great. This car was number 292 to roll off the assembly line, September 22 1955 and delivered to a dealer to introduce the first (and only) offering from the new Continental Division by Ford. Interior and Exterior: As you can see from the trim code, 05-1M6F-22-6, it has been repainted and reupholstered to the original color codes. Dark Green metallic (very shiny) and brand new leather seats with white bolsters, medium green biscuits, medium green interior. Door handles and locks have been rechromed, chrome is in excellent condition, all the interior has been freshly reupholstered and the trim where the top was removed is beautifully done. The leather seats are particularly beautiful; 5 full hides were used to avoid seams at the corners. The seats are equipped with vintage NOS retractable seat belts. Restoration: The car starts strong and runs great. Kaiser, Howard Johnson, the Shah of Iran, and many other celebrities owned them. The Mark II wasn't made by Lincoln, but by the short-lived Continental Division of the Ford Motor Company. Its general manager was William Clay 'Bill' Ford, son of Edsel Ford and grandson of Henry Ford. Fact: there never was a model designated as a Lincoln or Continental Mark I. The Mark II's sticker price was $10,400, twice the price of the 1956 Lincoln. Much of the car was assembled by hand and Ford claimed it lost $1,000 on each Mark II it sold. The unprofitable Mark II and the Continental Division were discontinued after Ford went public in 1956, even though these cars brought people into showrooms to buy other Ford products. Ford originally planned to build about 2,000 Mark IIs a year for five years. 2,550 Mark IIs were built during the 1956 model year (June 1955 through September 1956) and 446 (including 2 convertibles) during the 1957 model y ear (October 1956 through May 1957) for a total of 2,996 Mark IIs. About 1,500 Mark IIs are still in existence. (About half are roadworthy) Their current market value ranges from $15,000 to $100,000, depending on condition. (Although some have sold in the low-to-mid $100s) With restrained, modern styling and built with the finest materials available, the long, low continental MK IIs had a commanding presence of authoritative elegance as the most exclusive car on the market. Everyone of significance owned one from Elvis Presley to Frank Sinatra to D.W. Eisenhower to Nelson Rockefeller. And, yes, you did need to be a Rockefeller to afford one with a price of $10,000 when new - five times the price of an average Ford and half the cost of the average home in 1956. Even at this stupefying price, Fomoco claimed to have lost $1000 on every MK II they sold, and only two years of production could be sustained for the Continental brand. I urge anyone considering this car to inspect it personally. The car is in Highland, California. This is a driver quality car. It shows beautifully. It is not a concours quality restoration but an excellent professionally restored Mark II. There are flaws. There is a crack in the paint on the hood, small imperfections, some work left to do on the restoration, electrical components yet to be hooked up. It runs and drives great but is not perfect. I have received many email questions. Here are some answers: The car is a strictly Arizona and California car. NO RUST anywhere. This car was never equipped with AC. Comes with an extra set of replacement wheel covers which I use when driving to avoid possibility of losing one of the originals. I never had a chance to turn the car into a convertible. I have the original top which could be made into a removable hard top. I looked into having a convertible top made and it wouldn't be difficult. No frame modification would be necessary; dozens of Mark II convertibles have been made without frame strengthening. For now, this is a VERY cool parade car but you can use the old top to make it removable, if you want. On Sep-21-11 at 17:15:27 PDT, seller added the following information: I have invested over $35,000, out of pocket, and over 3 years restoring this car. I have had tons of emails, "What is your Buy It Now price". The car is for sale locally and I have had offers, but I prefer to let the auction run. It's a "no reserve" auction, since I am confident buyers will realize the value of this beautiful car. Several people have been here to see the car and all have fallen in love with it. Good luck.
