Vehicle Detail
1964 Ford Galaxie 500XL NO RESERVE This is a 1964 Ford Galaxie 500 XL, 2dr Hardtop. If you follow my auctions you already know that I am a Ford guy. The 1963 1/2-1964 Galaxie Fastbacks are one of my favorite all time cars in the Ford lineup. They are very stylish, and have a great look, and at the time, they were Kings at the Drag Strips, in A/FX and Super Stock Classes. This is the top of the line for a 1964 Galaxie, denoted by the door tag 63C. This is the 500 XL model, which includes Bucket Seats, Console, Deluxe Interior, Exterior Trim, and badges. This car is what I would call a survivor, it is fairly original, and is wearing about 85% of its original paint. The interior is all original, nothing has been replaced. I love a car like this, because what you see is what you get, it can only be original once. If I had the funds for a huge collection, I would collect Survivor untouched cars, there is just something about them that makes them special. It is believed that this car has 80,714 original miles, from the looks of the car, the drivers seat, the brake pedal, and general feeling of the car, I believe it may be true. I do not have documention of the mileage, so you should assume it has rolled over at least once. BODY: on this car is very nice for its age. It is not perfect by anymeans, but for the most part it is in pretty nice shape. Areas that I have noticed some spot painting is, on the rear truck lid, around the rear window area. There is a area on the passenger side quarter below trim toward the rear. The paint is getting thin in some areas, it is mostly original paint, meaning that this is the paint applied by Ford in 1964. There are various little dings on the car but nothing major, no big dents, just small door dings in various areas, you can see them in the pictures. The chrome and stainless are original, and are in decent shape, but if you were to restore it, you would want to have things polished and rechromed. The doors shut nice and solid, as well as the hood and trucklid, and you will notice all the body lines match up very nice. There are some small surface rust spots at the bottom of the drivers door, and various other spots on the car that will need attention down the road. The rear of the trunk lid, is heavily pitted on the rear, you can see the issues it has. The primmered area under the rear window, is were it looks to be the factory seam to the roof bottom it self, there was filler there, and I chipped it out, did not cut it, there is also a seam, at both ends. All in all, the rear piece of trim needs to be removed, and the panel cleaned up some more, and it needs to be filled back in, with lead or filler, and have it repainted along with the reast of the car. On the passenger side, there is some rust in that spot and a small hole, this is along the hidden seam, were the filler panel meets the qaurter, that is filled with factory lead, not to bad, but it will need to be repaired correctly. The trunk pan is in excellant shape, I cleaned it out, and chipped away the seam sealer, on the edges, so you will see some surface rust along the seams. This Galaxie trunk is in very nice shape. UNDERCARRIAGE: The frame on the car is in excellant shape, no rust issues, or any damage. The floor boards are in very nice shape, there is no rust, very solid from underneath of the car. The rockers are also in very nice shape, no signs of any rust issues. Here in Oregon, we have really mild winters, and cool summers, and we do not salt the roads, which really gives us the opportunity to have some cars in great survivor condition. Overall the exterior needs to be painted down the road, there are lots of chips and scratches, but frome 20' away it looks decent, and does have a gloss to the paint. The largest scratch is on the hood, see picture. Also there was some primer work, in the rear on the drivers side quarter. The glass is in good shape, the windows roll up and down smoothy. INTERIOR is in decent shape for its age. The interior is all original, and has not bee replaced. The seats are in good shape for being original. The dash pad does not have any cracks, the console is in good shape as well. The headliner is in very good shape. The carpet is original, but needs to be replaced, on the driverside, around the heal pad, and other spots have worn thin, and there is some rips in the carpet. The gauges work in the car, the radio and the clock do not work. The heater and wipers work good. Overall a nice interior for a good driver. MECHANICALS: It is in good shape. The engine is a 1964 Ford 352 V8, it starts right up and does not burn any oil, or blow any smoke. It has good throttle response and sound pretty nice. The eninge runs smooth, the 4V Carb is original to the car with correct tag, the intake manifold is correct Ford part number as well, and the heads look to be correct as well, with C4AE stampings. The engine is supposed to be black, with gold vavle covers and aircleaner. The engine and valve covers were already painted blue a long time ago. I put a new waterpump on it, and repainted the aircleaner so went with blue as well. It has new exhaust donuts on it, new points, and plugs. The gas tank was removed and cleaned as well, and new hoses under the hood as well. This car is very dependable and drives very nice for its condition. The transmission shifts nicely, no unusual noises, no clunks, feels good when it shifts. Same with the rearend, seems nice and tight. I did drain the rearend fluid, and put new gear oil in it. Transmission fluid was also changed recently as well. The brakes work well, and stop the car nicely. Overall mechanically it seems to be in fairly good condition for a vintage car. As time allows for the new owner, it would be a good idea to replace and upgrades things as you own it. But for now, you can drive it around town and enjoy it. It is NOT a trailer queen, but is a nice time capsule , that you would not be afraid to drive, but would also want to park it far away from anyone else in a general parking lot. A U C T I O N E N D S September 5th- This MONDAY NIGHT EAST COAST: 11:00 pm WEST COAST: 8:00pm These Pacific Wonderland Plates do not go with the car I took it to a show and had them on it for period correct look. This was last weekend, here in Salem/Keizer, Oregon. A Very good friend of mine, and myself, put on a small show at the end of very month during the summer, on Saturday morning, from 7:30am - 9:30am, called Keizer Cars and Coffee, yes we are there early, very laid back, and every type of car you can imagine. It is a very mixed show, from Ferrari and Maserati's to Saabs, Rat Rods, Mustangs, VW Things, Vettes, etc. There is even a 1946 Ford F1 sporting a Jaguar V12 with Dual Carbs, running a Tremic 6spd, I shoud say it sounds like a Jaguar, but it sounds like a well tuned Ferrari. This is just a good time, to visit with folks and have some Coffee. If you have a chance to stop by the next one is Sept 24th, and yes in the morning. I always bring something different, and thought the 500 XL fit right in. Looking good between a MG Steel Bumper Roadster, and a Cobra Daytona Kit, and a 1968 Bentley in the rear. By no means is this a show car, but it can hold its own, and it proudly shows its original beauty. This was a fun day, drove it all over town this weekend, even had it washed at my daughters fund raiser for her school, it was fun to cruise it around with our kids to enjoy. Here my son and I are on our way home heading south on I5, getting off at the Market St. Exit. This car is a great running car, and cruises nicely, we are going about 60 mph at his moment. Interior is all original in this car, nothing has been changed, seats are original, headliner, dash pad is nice as well. It is not perfect, but I wouldn't change hardly anything. The carpet is about the only thing that I would change in the future. This is a Big Block 1964 Ford 352 V8. Even has the original intake and Ford Autolite 4100 4V carb. Front bumper is very straight on this car, and grill is in excellant shape. Grill could use a good polish, light surrounds are in good shape as well This car has 85-90% of its original paint on the car from 1964, it is a true survivor. I love this view on these 1964 Galaxie, that roof line is my favorite. Rear bumper is also in very nice shape as well. Original Door Tag on the car. VIN DECODE: 4P68X169712 = 4- 1964, P- Twin Cities, MN, 68- Galaxie 500 XL Fastback, X- 352 V8, 169712 - Consecutive unit number. Body: 63C - Galaxie XL500 2dr Fastback, Color: V - Sunlight Yellow, (Special Order, this color came out in late March 1964 for the New Mustang, and this Galaxie XL500 recieved a Mustang Color). Trim: 86 - Crush Vinyl Black, Date: 24C - March 24th, DSO: Unknow, might have been special ordered or special service, Axle: 1 - 3.00:1, Trans: 4 - Cruise-O-Matic. Vin on the Cowl matches the door tag and title. 68 in the vin lets you know that it is a factory 500 XL. Oregon title, clean and clear. Very nice headliner for its age. Rear piller dome lights are working as well. Door panels in fairly good shape, nice enough that you would not want to change them. Notice that the lights are working in the door as well, white light is for interior courtesy, and the red is for safetly if you have your door open people can see you. Another very nice door panel, lights work as well. No cracks in the dash A few hairline cracks in the original steering wheel, notice it still has its XL horn button. This is a picture at night, just showing all the lights off. In person in the evening it looks great with the black interior and the lights on, very classy. Original 1964 Ford Part number on the 4V intake manifold. The heads read 1964 Ford part numbers as well. I am not sure if this is the original 352 to this car, since they did not VIN stamp Fords in these years. But the part numbers lead me to believe it is or is at least the same year which is great. And yes, I do know the engine is supposed to be black, with gold valve covers and gold aircleaner, this is the way I got it. I only painted the new water pump, and aircleaner blue since the rest was blue already. 1964 Tag on the Autolite 4100 4V Carb. Original factory floors, very solid, and just look beautiful, this is what you want to find on these cars. Frame is excellent, all the body mounts look solid, very nice original underneath. One small bubble at the corner of the door, fender, and rockers again are in great shape. That is a paint scrap right in front of the wheel, no dent or rust. The rockers on this car are very nice, wait til you see the undercarriage, very solid. There was a small repair on the quarter that was spot painted, you can see the discoloration. Bottom of quarter and body lines are in great shape. Notice also that it has its original XL Hub Caps, hard to find. The primmered area under the rear window, is were it looks to be the factory seam to the roof bottom it self, there was filler there, and I chipped it out, did not cut it, there is also a seam, at both ends. That metal overlaps the grey primmered area. If you can not figure out the picture, give me a call, I would be glad to explain it to you. All in all, the rear piece of Chrome trim needs to be removed, and the panel cleaned up some more, and it needs to be filled back in, with lead or filler, and have it repainted along with the rest of the car. This is a small rust hole, there is a seam that runs from the trunk lid in this area, to the back of the trim, this needs to be repaired, there is factory lead in this area, the connects the quarter with the filler panel. Some little tiny rust blisters, at the bottom of the door, notice rockers are very good, and the bottom of the drivers fender is excellant. Something to remember this car has about 85-90% of its original paint on it from 1964. Some one keyed the hood at some point during its life. You can see small chips and scratches on the car from its age. Some places are thing, but then again, this is not a trailer queen, it is original paint, which I looked this good, and I am only 41. Along the bottom of the passenger side rocker, see all the original spot welds, very nice, no rust. This is the factory drain, in the rocker panel, drivers side rear, there was the factory rubber drain still attached, but I accidently ripped it off. Front of the drivers rocker, again very clean. Drivers rear bottom of quarter, just regular road rash. from being drivin, notice factory pinch weld at the bottom. Passenger side rocker and fender, just road wear, no rust, factory spot welds look great. Drivers side, fender and rocker, clean. Rear of passenger side rocker, were it was scrapped, also notice below, the rubber drain grommet. Trunk pan is very solid, it needs to be cleaned, the seams are very solid, took off the old sealant on the seams, to look at it, and they seams on the pan are clean. There is some surface rust here and there, but nothing really that major to deal with. Also notice factory jack, and spare. Inner door jams all look in great shape, no rusty supports, very clean for a car this age. Here you can see a little discoloration in the roof, I think the rear of the roof around window was painted long ago.
