I'm selling my black 1997 Volkswagen Jetta TDI. It has a 1.9 liter turbocharged diesel engine, a 5 speed manual transmission, and has 230,593 miles. It runs great and shows no signs of any engine problems whatsoever. I'm selling it because I've gotten a newer model car. The car originally came from California where it was driven as a commuter car approximately 150 miles a day on the highway. It's been maintained as per the manufacturer's recommendations using only synthetic high-mileage turbodiesel-specific oil. Some positive things to note about the car: - 48 MPG average! I recently drove a full car of 5 people and luggage to NYC and back to DC on 3/4 of a tank - timing belt changed last year (I estimate around 15,000 or less on it so far) - front brake pads and rotors replaced less than 2,000 miles ago - rear shocks replaced less than 2,000 miles ago (same time as brakes) - windshield replaced within past month (old one was worn and had rock chips in it) - all original speakers replaced with Infinity Reference speakers - original head unit replaced with Boss system (7 INCH TOUCH SCREEN, BLUETOOTH, AUX IN, DVD PLAYER, pretty much everything). It does stick out about a centimeter extra past the dash. - back-up camera ready to be installed and will include with car if desired - 6-CD changer in the trunk (now only secondary to the in-dash player) - after market large size fuel injectors installed - computer performance chip installed (car has SIGNIFICANTLY more power than other TDIs of this year) Some issues to note about the car: - the horn buttons don't work. The horn itself works as I found out when I replaced the battery and the car alarm went off. - there appears to be some repaired damage on the right rear corner. I only noticed the repair marks this past year- had no idea when I purchased the car (nothing was visible). Other than the marks, it looks completely normal. - when first starting ONLY a cold engine in 1st gear, the car appears to shudder if not enough gas is used. Once you put it into 2nd or drive the car for 30 seconds or so the gear shuddering/studdering goes away entirely. I researched this and I believe this is caused by the after market fuel injectors on the cold engine. It appears to be an entirely superficial issue with no mechanical implications. - there are some minor water leak issues. Now this is a strange one- the water does NOT come from the roof. It comes, somehow, from the side panels and will put a little water on the trunk or floor, but not anywhere above that. I have no problems or hesitation putting items in the trunk or car for trips. The water leaks do not appear to happen while driving and even if there's a massive thunderstorm and the car is outside, there won't necessarily be any water inside. It makes very little sense, so I didn't try and pay a mechanic thousands of dollars to "possibly" fix the problem. In conclusion this car is extremely reliable. I joke among friends that this car is impossible to kill because of the solid diesel engine. If you have a long commute (like I used to have), this car is PERFECT. The high gas mileage in combination with the bluetooth connectivity, CD/DVD/MP3 player in the dash, and high-quality Infinity speakers make this car a very enjoyable driving experience. The paint is in relatively good condition, normal wear and tear, with the roof being more faded when compared to the paint on the rest of the car. The vehicle is sold AS IS with no warranty.
