Vehicle Detail
So here it is. My beloved '65 Volvo 122S. For those who know these cars, the details are in the pictures. However, if you are new to the world of Volvo's, this is a 1.8L 4-banger with dual SU carbs backed by 4-speed tranny. Reminds me of an old Shoe-box Ford, except half the headache I say. She is a good daily driver with all the "thrills" and waves as a good classic should get. Minimally modified this little car is a keeper. Completely restorable or a smoking base for a hotrod. The B18 is stock and has had the head rebuilt (lapped valves and new seals), rebuilt carbs, and new goodies throughout over a 2 year period; fuel pump, generator (not Alternator), voltage regulator, battery, etc... A recent tune-up makes for a peppy ride! The original transmission has been replaced with another M40 and has no slop however 3rd is kind of loud (weird). Other then that, solid. The body, as you can see, is straight and all the chrome is accounted for, sans one (1) beauty ring. There are of course small nicks and dings and scratches but nothing out of the ordinary. I tried capturing them in the photos but I am no Tim Wallace. The paint is a lovely metallic blue, however the base coat was a little shoddy and is starting to peal in certain areas; roof and fenders. I had aspirations of sanding it down and painting it flat back, exacerbating the rat rod look, but no. It still gets heads to turn and no matter in what condition, I will always think these are one of the most beautiful cars ever. The interior is pretty clean and in good condition aside from a slightly collapsed driver seat.. which actually works better for plugging my 6 foot-self in. The vinyl is only slightly worn on the drivers seat and the back seat and passenger's looks remarkably untouched. The dash has slight cracks but minor and are in the natural grooves of the dash. I put a tach in, one that closely resembles the '67 GT's tach. However, it has a mind of its own all of a sudden. I hooked up my Dwell/Tach meter to the distributor and all is well, but I just left it where it is for ascetics (will investigate further within the week) . The horn ring broke the first time I drove it. No power steering makes for hand over fist turns and in my haste I ripped the ring off, breaking the stupid little plastic tab the activates the horn. SO, I have a push button under the dash, works like a charm. Lights, heater, wipers and a "booming" Alpine tape deck all work :) The headliner is also in ok shape. As for the ignition, the original coil had an "armored" cable permanently attached to the negative side of the ignition switch (for anti-theft purposes). The coil has been replaced with a new style coil (with a positive and negative terminal) and a new switch has been installed because the tumbler in the original one wore out. The switch is an after market one from Kragens which worked in a pinch but an OE 240 switch was planned but I never got around to it. The only thing that should be addressed are the points. I was leaving those for last because I was gathering the necessary parts to put in an electronic ignition system (and upgrade to an alternator). I also have a few extra parts and pieces that I will throw in as well as the shop manuals for both the car and the SU carbs. That is all I can think of at the moment.
