This 1947 Mercury Sportsman 4 door Sedan is a faux barn find. It has the perfect patina of the period while the Chevy power makes life easy. This is an Unoriginal Coachbuilt Custom Woody (Woodie) built in the style and with the craftsmanship of those built by Coachcraft, Bohman and Schwartz and others of that era. The car was a frame off restoration, less interior prior to the woody conversion. Powered by a fresh Chevrolet 327 “ mated by a vintage Offenhauser adapter to the original Mercury three speed column shift transmission. This feeds into a completely rebuilt and “bulletproofed” Columbia Two Speed differential. The rebuild and bulletproofing were in 2010 by John Connelly of Columbia Two Speed in Temecula Ca. This woody has a number of character upgrades, including new leather interior, wooden headliner and door panels, chrome dash bezels and speaker cover, a ’49 Mercury Outboard modified for use as an air cleaner, and a canteen housing the electric fuel pump. Built with lines and proportions to match the fabled Sportsman it was constructed of Maple and Mahogany over the original steel, This Sedan is now a modern Woody. Multiple coats of marine spar varnish make the wood glow and provide a durable finish with the added strength of the metal body. All panels are seated in marine bedding compound to provide a waterproof backside as well as the varnish to seal the outer finish. The car is an amalgam of period marine and automotive technology with the use of lots of wood and stainless steel throughout. This was handcrafted by a guitar maker and is of a higher quality than any factory-built woody. Panels are fastened from the interior with stainless steel screws and bedded in Dolphinite marine, anti-fungal bedding compound to prevent any water from getting behind the wood panels.
