Vehicle Detail
1990 Volkswagen Vanagon GL Westfalia. 2.1 Liter 112HP. 2 WD. PS (Power Steering), Airconditioning. Manual window regulators (not electric) VIN: WV2ZB0250LH049913. Mileage 180295 Rust Free. We don’t have time to use this wonderful vehicle enough, so we’re putting her up for auction. If you are looking for a Westy the pre August 1985 models had a less powerful 1.9 engine, smaller brakes and the suspension and the lights were of a lesser specification to the 1986 thro 1991 models. This is why the later models command higher prices. There are other upgrades, but I am not going to list them all. (The 1980 thro 1982 models had a 2.0 liter aircooled engine which is generally reliable but the heating is poor. There was a very underpowered 1600cc Diesel Engine available in 1982 only in the US and Canada. As with all older vehicles the most expensive item to fix is rust. Welding and bodywork are very expensive, so be careful where you purchase a Vanagon. I can find no rust anywhere on this vehicle. See for yourself in the pictures. This Westy (Full conversion, not weekender) is not a show vehicle, we have been to Ottawa, Canada in her and to the California and Oregon coasts. She has covered 180,295 miles, however she has had many items replaced using only German parts. Some sellers on e-bay list a vehicle as having only 5,000 or 25,000 miles because the engine has been rebuilt, when the vehicle has in reality covered 150,00 miles plus. If I chose to list the vehicle this way it would have only covered 7,000 miles. Many people do not know that Vanagons have different specification engines. This is the most powerful one VW made, 112 HP. I have had 98MPH out of this vehicle fully loaded for 2 weeks camping! This was confirmed by a friend with a GPS following in a Subaru powered Vanagon. She will cruise all day at 75, however if I am driving across Utah and Nevada in June I usually cruise at 65 to 70 MPH because the fuel consumption is then 22MPG to 24MPG or better. She was serviced with new air filter, oil filter etcetera and Mobil 1 synthetic oil this summer and has just done around 50 miles since. The steering is perfect and she does not pull either direction under braking. The muffler pipes and Cat are all original VW (Not aftermarket) and are in excellent shape. Obviously she is 21 years old and comes without warranty, however I would not hesitate to drive her from Colorado to the East or West Coast. The interior is I would say 9 out of 10. There are no holes or signs of wear in the upholstery and the seats are not sagging. All the camping equipment is clean and fully functional. The armrests and seat belts are good. The aircon is charged and the seat foam is all good. Every item that comes with one of these is included, tables, drivers handbook etcetera. The curtains are not torn. Even the ice tray for the fridge is included. The CD / Radio works well and all the speakers are hooked up. Extras: Propex heater with thermostat for spring, fall and winter camping professionally installed under rear seat. I would never own a camper without one of these. Airconditioning. Dual batteries. Genuine VW mudflaps 15 x 5.5” BRM style alloy wheels with locking nuts. 98% New Nokian tires. The correct 8 ply tire as should be fitted to a Vanagon. 6 Ply and less car tires are not safe on these vehicles. This tire and wheel package considerably improves road holding and cross wind stability without changing the speedometer reading because the tire is a lower profile to make up for the larger wheel rim.. Bilstein German shock absorbers front and rear. These also improve stability and prevent the front end getting loose under heavy braking or fast cornering. German floor mats over top of carpets. Comes with a drive away side awning tent included in sale. Rear wash wipe standard on a GL. CD Player Radio with four speakers. Everything works on this vehicle. The fridge works on propane, battery or hook up. The window and door seals are original and are not cracked or perished. The negatives: There is a scratch on the left rear (drivers) side that you can see in the pictures. It was there three years ago when we purchased this Westy. There is no rust because the paint has not been punctured. The pop top canvas is the original and has a 5” tear that we have repaired. You can see it easily in the pictures. If we were keeping her I would replace the canvas, however the pop top seals are fine. She was repainted about seven years ago because the sun dulled the paint. If there had been any rust it would have shown by now. The color is the original. The bumpers and spoilers could use fresh black or grey paint one day. We purchased this vehicle in Altadena (Los Angeles) and stored it inside in Colorado. I cannot find any rust on it after 21 years. The underside is completely rust free and there is no rust in the seams. (Vanagons are prone to rust in the seams and it is very expensive to repair; furthermore unless new panels are welded into the body it invariably returns). Although this vehicle has covered 180,000 miles we replaced the cylinder heads and overhauled the engine 7,000 miles ago when we returned from Canada. The new cylinder heads are AMC brand from Spain with top quality TRW valves installed. Three years and only around 9,000 miles ago we replaced the following: All parts used were OEM German or Genuine VW, not aftermarket. Rear Heater Core. Cylinder Heads and Gaskets. All coolant flushed and changed. Coolant to -30. Hoses checked. None needed replacing. New Ignition wires and spark plugs. All new belts in engine. Power steering pump reconditioned. All 4 shocks with Bilsteins. (The wheels and tires have only done 5,000 miles or less) All front and rear wheel bearings. Main battery and auxiliary battery with correct ones for this vehicle Brake pads and shoes. Accelerator Cable. Front and Rear Emblems. Rear hatch struts (with postioning version). AFN wiring kit to prevent cutout at cruising speed (essential on a Vanagon) Four Engine Mounts. Brake and Clutch Fluid flushed and changed. New Ball Joints. New Bosch Wiper Blades and Washer Nozzles 1 x Used headlamp as glass was cracked. Most of the steering and suspension bushes were replaced Transmission Oil was replaced with correct grade. Various gear linkage bushings were replaced as these hard nylon bushings are prone to wear on Vanagons. Auxilliary Battery and Main Battery replaced. All fuel tank grommets and vent hoses replaced. Sink Tap unit replaced. New Jack purchased from Go Westy. The stainless pipes visible on the underside pic are the intake and exhaust pipes for the Ptopex Heater. The following Documents will be supplied with the vehicle: Copy of previous title from Altadena California Many Invoices Owners Handbook Refrigerator Handbook Copy of Invoice for repairs carried out 05/06/08 totaling $4165.00 Copy of Invoice for service this spring $360.00 These Invoices do not include the wheels, tires, propex heater, or many other small items. We will gladly collect you from Colorado Springs airport or help to load the Vanagon onto a transporter, but we will not pay any shipping charges. Shipping to the East Coast is probably around $1,000 and the West Coast around $800. Our Zip Code is 80909 for you to obtain an accurate quote to your door. I estimate shipping to Europe or Japan would be in the region of $3,500. This is an estimate only. In order to obtain an accurate quote our Zip Code (Postcode) is 80909. A Vanagon is 15" 2" long, same as a normal size SUV or a larger model Audi.
