Vehicle Detail
1951 Studebaker Champion NO RESERVE This is a 1951 Studebaker Champion 2dr. These are are very popular among collectors, the Bullet Nose cars were ony built 2 years 1950-1951. I have always had a passion for these cars, they are very unique, and not often seen. I believe that Studebaker was way ahead of their time in styling in the 50's, nothing compared. If you want something different then everyone else and a classic that is very affordable to own look no further. I purchased this car from the 3rd owner. He bought it in 1996, with 47,026 miles on the odometer. He put the car in long time storage around 2002. When I picked up the car, it had 47,955 on the odometer. I have since put about 50 miles on it. Overall this is a good car that someone can enjoy and drive right now, and fix little things here and there as you own it. It is believed that is only has 48K, but assume it has rolled over since I do not have any physical documented information. Overall, this Studebaker is in great shape for a 60 year old car. I would basically call it a nice driver, that you could take to the local cruise-ins, and small shows, it does look nice and is very presentable. Mechanically I think this Stude is in good shape. I had all the valves adjusted, had it timed, new wires, plugs, caps, rotor, points all installed. Put a new intake and exhaust manifold on it, new valve cover gaskets, and oil pan gasket. Also had the carb adjusted, but it could be gone though in the future, to get it really dialed in. Overall, it starts right up, and idles nicely, and is very quiet when running, just purrs like a kitten really. I do believe the drivetrain is the original engine to the car, it is a Studebaker Inline 6 in the Champion models. It does not blow any smoke, when driving or when starting, so seems to be in good repair. The engine really could use a good detail, but overall it runs good. When I had the valve adjusted I took a picture, and they looked very clean under the rocker covers, and when I had the oil pan off, the engine was very clean inside. The transmission seems to be in good shape. It does shift good, and the clutch feels decent in the car. Sometimes shifting into 2nd can be a little trouble, but not much, i just move the shifter around a little, and it goes right in, I have gotten used to it so drive it with no problem, could use a linkage ajustment perhaps. The brakes seem to be in decent shape. They need to be adjusted a bit more, it does pull to the left a little when braking, but I have not tried to adjust them as of yet. It is pretty easy to adjust these type of cars. It does drive decent down the road, it wonders a bit, since it is old. The frontend could use some new bushings, and a good lube in the future, the king pins are a little worn as well. It does steer good, no issues or concerns with that. It also has new oil and filter, and the fluid levels in the transmission and rearend levels were checked as well. Mechanically a pretty sound car, that use some weekend tinkering from time to time to get it dialed in. Interior is in decent shape and is pleasant to drive in. The seats are in nice shape, and have good padding. The dash area is in good shape as well, and is clean. The door panels are in good shape as well. The headliner is original, an is worn, and does have a few small holes but overall decent for its age. The carpet is all there, but there are some wear spots and a few holes in it. The windows all roll up and down nicely. There is a picture of the instrument cluster while I am driving it, and the gas gauge is not working currently. I actually think it is the wire, or the unit on the gas tank though. The windshield wipers are not working currently, and one wiper arm is missing. It did have a radio at one point, but it is missing. The dash lights and dome light are not working currently. The odometer, Speedometer, oil pressure, Amps, and temp guage all work, as well as the heater blower works. The horn works, but I disconnected it because one day it would not turn off. There is a factory OD, Overdrive unit on this car, but I pulled it while in 3rd gear, and could not get it to go into OD, so not sure why. Overally the interior is in decent shape, just needs a little cleaning, here and there, and small repairs. This Studebaker was painted in the early 80's by the second owners. It is shiny still and looks good from 20' away, it does have a nice gloss to it. There are a few chips and light scratches on the car some touched up some not. There are no signs of any rust bubbles or on the body. The rockers look good, quarters and fenders, the inner door jams look good as well. The body on the car is sound, but the body work could have been a little better when they did it almost 25 year ago, there are some spots that are a little wavy when you look down the side. If you ever have it repainted, you can straighten and block sanded and prepped better. But over all it is a decent little car. The doors have a few indentions down low, that you can see in the pictures. The chrome is in good useable shape on the car as well. The trunk area had some repairs done to the floor many years ago, and they used some fiberglass to repair some rust spots. The spare tire area is in good shape, with only minor surface rust. The undercarraige is in very good shape, very solid frame, and floors, just minor surface rust from being driven and being 60 years old. The trunk lid, does shut, but the drivers side hinge is sprung a little, and they tried to weld it at some point, so you have put it down a little when closing it. The trunk does latch, but my key does not work in it, but it is in the unlock position. The iginition key does work in the door locks. The glass looks good in the car, no cracks, or rock chips. The tires are older Nylon Wide Whites, they show there age, but I think they are decent still, I have had it out on the road at 55mph and they seem to be in good shape, a set of radial tires would change the way it drove as well. Overall a good car that you can enjoy and drive, and work on it as you go. It is NOT a trailer queen, but is a nice time capsule, 1951 Studebaker, that you would not be afraid to drive, but would also want to park it far away from anyone else in a general parking lot. A U C T I O N E N D S July 24th- This Sunday NIGHT EAST COAST: 11:00 pm WEST COAST: 8:00pm This engine is pretty much original under hood, I know it doesn't look flashy, but it purrs like a kitten. It is running in all my photos. Just needs a nice detail under the hood. It has new intake and exhaust manifold gasket, exhaust flange gasket, dual side valve cover gaskets, and recently adjusted the valves as well. Also a new oil pan gasket was installed. Next picture shows how clean the inside of the engine is. Also, has new cap, rotor, points, plugs, wires as well. The carb works decent, but it could use a rebuild down the road to get it all dialed in. On Jul-23-11 at 22:11:29 PDT, seller added the following information: Hi, thanks for all the interest in the car, those who have called and emailed. The windsheild wipers do work, just didn't turn the knob on the dash correctly. Thanks, Jason
