For Sale: 1966 Mustang Notchback Coupe Historic Road Race Car -- VRG, SVRA, HSR, VARAC, VDCA, FIA SCCA Trans-Am Group II A/S(American Sedan) class racer. 95 PHOTOS AND A VIDEO WALK-AROUND OF THE CAR CAN BE SEEN HERE! The car began life May 20th, 1966 in Dearborn, Michigan as a 1966 Mustang notchback(Coupe) painted Vintage Burgundy on Black. 289 2V "C" code(200hp/280tq), 4-speed transmission car. It was then shipped to the dealer in Jacksonville, Florida(DSO 24) as a "Special Order" car. The dealer then installed all of the GT options on the car. Original V8 4spd car w/ dealer installed GT options History: The car has been owned and kept by a Florida owner since birth. The Mustang notchback coupes were often chosen for Group II A/S(Shelby converted and raced 20 of them) and in the late 60's/early 70's, this car began it's long racing career. The 289 was removed and a high compression BOSS 302 was installed in it's place(the Trans-Am class limit). It was raced competitively in many Group II races throughout this period and has many old school racing tricks performed throughout the body such as aluminum screws and fiberglass fender flairs that many of the cars had then. I do not know if it is a Championship car or not(probably not). I'm also not sure which year the car stopped the racing circuit and was stored. Around 2000, the car was removed from storage and prepped for Bonneville and the ECTA standing mile(Monster Mile) where it was certified for the 160mph+ class. Prepping included the custom Heidt front suspension/coil-overs were installed, fiberglass hood fabricated to comply with ECTA rules, etc... The car was also painted matte/satin white around this period as well. Shortly after this, the cars owner/racer passed away and the car sat until late 2009 when it was purchased it from his estate. It was a "barn find" for me and several vintage parts were missing(steering wheel, carb, intake etc) including the logbooks. I cleaned up the car some, replaced the missing parts and just had the engine professionally rebuilt. I did not restore it because I know whoever buys and races it will want it painted and done their way. Condition: The car is unrestored and has all original metal. I cleaned up the exterior some but I've never washed the underbody. The underbody and frame are extremely solid and show only occasional light surface rust. The common 1966 Mustang rust areas such as the battery tray and cowl are also 100% on this car. The cowl area was closed off nicely years ago(see pics) and all of the floorboards appear solid as well. Inside the floorboards are painted a light grey. Outside the paint is matte/satin white and thin in some areas. The original Vintage Burgundy can be seen in some places where the paint is chipped. Some spots on the car that look like rust in the photos are just the original paint. As for rust the car has: The doors have some rust at the bottoms where water leaked past the rubber window seal and pooled up inside. There is also some rust starting around the windows and driver side drip rails and the driver-side corner seam of the door jam and trunk. There is a 1" hole in the driver side front fender at the bottom. The inside welds for the over-rider traction bars have oxidized and will need redone as well(or remove the bars). Mechanically the car is awesome; it's extremely fast and handles unbelievably. The engine was completely torn down and rebuilt and the transmission was gone through as well. There are 50 miles on the engine since rebuild. Before racing, the brakes should be bled. The tires will also need checked but hold air great. The glass is also in amazing condition. Overall, the car will be a very easy restoration for someone, or maintain the vintage and drive it as-is. Engine: 454ci .030 overbore (461ci) - decodes to a 1971 Corvette 12:1 compression 4-bolt mains / Forged crank / chrome journals Forged connecting rods/ Forged domed pistons Aluminum L88 Corvette/COPO heads(original Winters castings, extremely rare!) Stainless valves Harland Sharp roller rockers Aluminum Edelbrock manifold(not vintage) Aluminum waterpump etc. Transmission: The transmission is a Ford 4-speed OD toploader with custom gear ratios. The 4th gear is .80(!) overdrive which is great for top-end performance and highway mileage. 60mph is about 2000rpm - no need for a 5-speed! The clutch is a McLeod Racing dual-disk unit and feels great. Original Vintage Hurst shifter. Scatter shield. Ford 9" rear 28-spline posi locker. Suspension: It has a custom race Heidt adjustable front suspension installed with tubular control arms(upper and lower) and coil-over shocks. Along with a quick-ratio rack/pinion vintage steering. Rare period correct 1965 Shelby "over-rider" traction bars which come into the backseat area. Tires/Wheels: Period-correct T/A aluminum racing wheels from around 1970. Front Tires - Pirelli P6000 Sport Veloce 225/60R/15 Rear Tires - BF Goodrich Radial T/A 295/50R/15 Braking: Vintage Wildwood 4-wheel disk brakes - stops with the best of them. Misc: All vintage SW/VDO gauges(except for speedo). Snap-in carpet for quick removal on race day. Simpson 4-point race harness, adjustable seats. The fuel cell is 24 Gallons with sponge. Brake proportioning valve(in-car), Line-lock(in-car), fuel cutoff, ignition cut and push button start The car has been set up so that changing the engine back to Ford is as simple as unbolting it and bolting yours in. There are classes that will allow it to race with the current engine, OR it is set up so that you can simply drop in your 289/302 race motor for a vintage stock class. You shouldn't need to make any modifications and the transmission is a Ford toploader and will bolt right up to your Ford race engine. You can sell the engine currently in the car for about $9k. For stricter classes, it is set-up to allow easy installation of a stock appearing or Shelby hood. Currently, I have reinstalled the bumpers to make it street legal. The carpet is custom and snaps in and out for easy removal on race day. ALL of the lights and turn signals work great including the wipers. The rear valance is dented(see pics) but I have a correct NOS GT rear valance I will include in the sale. It is prepped and ready for paint. I also have some extra parts and trim which I will include with the car as well. If you're looking for a nearly turn-key way to get into competitive vintage racing, this is a great and very affordable way to do it. I do not have any of the log books(only 1 is issued per car), so I am setting this as a NO RESERVE auction! Let me repeat: Whatever this auction ends at is what it sells for! Don't spend $35k on a reproduction when you can get the real thing! I've sold another vintage race Mustang and it's currently happily racing vintage class in Germany! Similar Mustang notchback coupes with race history sell for $45,000-55,000 if you can find them -- So bid accordingly! Again: 95 PHOTOS AND A VIDEO WALK-AROUND OF THE CAR CAN BE SEEN HERE!
