Vehicle Detail

The M-B 280SL represents one of the sweet spots in classic car collecting. The W113 Mercedes, nicknamed “Pagoda”, is a very drivable collectible with timeless styling. A nice article in the current issue of the Mercedes Club magazine says this about the 280SL: “40 years after production ceased, the Pagodas still look fresh with alluring appeal. One of the hallmarks of most of Paul Bracq’s stylings is they have withstood the test of time – and you can consider this example his most beautiful.” The same article specifically lists reasons to buy a W113 Mercedes today. Among them are: · Timeless design · Availability of parts · Modern amenities · Active clubs · Expert restorers · Sweet spot of production The car offered for sale is a nice driver level 280 SL. Very attractive original color combination of silver with red interior. The 4 speed makes this a driver’s car, and the optional air conditioning allows it to be an everyday car almost anywhere. This car has many pluses, beginning with the fact that it is complete car with lots of additional potential. All the rare lights, lenses, and housings are present and in good condition. The car is structurally sound with great original pans. The silver paint is presentable and shows the few spots of rust that are in the usual places – around the headlight buckets, a small spot in the rear valance, and a little in the left rear wheel well. All these spots are shown in the photos. The overall paint is presentable and all of the weak spots are low on the car, barely noticeable, and could easily be corrected with spot painting if desired. The car drives very well and runs strong. If a prospective buyer would like a leak down or compression test it can be done at the buyer’s expense. I do not feel the need when a car runs this well. The car has both the hard top and the soft top. The soft top does not fit very well but no effort has been made to fit it since it is never used. Every effort will be made to represent the car fairly but of course a car of this age is sold as is. The car is available in Southern Pines, NC for inspection. You may call Steve at 910-585-1515 for any questions. The article on Pagodas in the Star Magazine (current) lists the price range for a 280SL from a low of $27,315 to a high of $115,000 for a top concours condition car. The reserve is very reasonable and this car should make a great ride as well as a good investment for the buyer.
