Vehicle Detail

Here is your opportunity to bid on a very unique and seldom seen vehicle . . . AUCTION ITEM: 1973 Chrysler Newport SPECIAL EDITION - In the spring of 1973, Chrysler Corp. released some specially-equipped models to boost mid-year sales. Touted as the "Gold Sticker Values", these special models could only be had as the package specified, with the possible addition of some optional equipment. There was a Plymouth "Gold Duster", a Plymouth Fury "Special" and the Chrysler Newport "Special Edition". This model boasted special Navajo cloth on a white vinyl bench seat, copper-red shag carpeting, white vinyl top and Navajo Copper Metallic paint with orange pinstripe (REAL pin-stripping . . . not vinyl decal). The chromed "Road Wheels" were an option. It came available as a two or four-door as well as a sedan. This vehicle is the rarer and more desirable two-door coupe. HISTORY: Technically, I am the third owner. The vehicle had been in the same family since new but, was given to the son of the original owner in December 1987. I bought the vehicle from the son. The actual, current miles on this vehicle are 42,129 (forty two thousand one hundred twenty nine). These miles are FULLY- DOCUMENTED by 1. The obvious condition of the vehicle and 2. a three-ring, hard-bound binder containing all of the original repair and service work done on the vehicle since new. CONDITION: The exterior paint, vinyl top and interior are all original. The chrome bumpers are in almost unbelievable condition! Here is a list of the four, replaced main components: 1. The transmission was replaced with a rebuilt transmission on 7-7-82 (Invoice #993) with a recorded mileage of 26,592. Notes on the receipt indicate "burnt reverse band". The son told me that the father was meticulous about maintaining the vehicle and since the original transmission had been giving him some trouble, he had it replaced, rather than repaired. 2. The carburetor was replaced with a new one on 11-22-82 (Invoice #16775). The original carburetor had been exhibiting "hard-starting" characteristics and was rebuilt on 11-15-82 (invoice #16660), but apparently continued to be a problem so the original owner had it replaced. 3. The water pump was replaced 10-31-85 (Invoice #35058), at a recorded mileage of 36,568 and 4. The power-steering pump was replaced by me on 5-12-08 (receipt#1034322), with a recorded mileage of 41,979. NOTE: I think the orginal starter has been replaced because sometimes, when you have to crank the engine for several seconds (after the vehicle has sat for a few weeks), the starter makes a squealing noise at times, which is typical for a rebuilt starter of this period. (I know this because, being a die-hard Mopar fan and having to replace several re-built starters from this period, the "squealing" was sometimes a characteristic of a rebuilt starter). Sometimes you got lucky and received a re-built starter that did not exhibit that noise and other times you did . . . it was simply the luck of the draw! The vehicle received an undercoating treatment and most of it is still intact and can be seen throughout the undercarriage, several areas in the engine compartment, trunk and even on the fender tag! Since there was a slow leak in the heater core, I have disconnected the water lines to it so as to not damage the front carpet. The A/C currently does not work but, all of the components are present and most-likely it could function again with new seals and a refill of refrigerant. The windshield wiper fluid reservoir is cracked but, since I don't use it, it hasn't been a problem for me. All of the instrumentation, switches, knobes, levers, lights, radio, vents, etc. work. Since I have owned the vehicle I have had the front wheel bearings repacked and new seals installed, the transmission serviced, replaced the power-steering pump and changed the oil and filter. (Receipts included for all the work I have done to the vehicle). The vehicle rides, steers and handles well as it floats along at highway speeds and gets lots of waves and comments wherever I go! Here is an interesting note . . . the tires currently on the vehicle were installed on 9-17-83 (receipt # I-43142), and are in remarkable shape although, I would probably feel better driving down the highway at 70mph with newer tires! Shortly after purchase, the original owner replaced the factory wheel covers with chrome wire-wheel covers, which really dressed the vehicle up nicely! These are triple-chromed covers that weight 4 lbs. each and are of high quality. (Original hubcaps included). ***A three-ring binder, containing the original purchase documents, original registration, original window sticker, original warranty, original recall notices, miscellaneous repair and service receipts and an independant Collector Car appraisal of the vehicle done in 1986 (showing an appraised value of $7,700.00), will be included with the car. The vehicle is registered in Galen Govier's Registry and the original acknowlegement letter is included.*** The exterior body is in mint condition. The paint and vinyl top are in excellent condition. Most people, when they see the vehicle cannot believe that the paint is original! There is one small area (about 3" in length), along the front edge of the vinyl topjust above the windshield, that shows rust bubbling underneath the top (see photo). There are no rips or tears in the vinyl top. The original owner had some paint touch-up work done to the lower panel on the driver's side door and there is a fify-cent piece sized circle of bubbling at the bottom, leading edge of the driver's side door. There is obviously no "rust-through" in any of the quarter panels or rust in the trunk. Notice how nice the ORIGINAL trunk mat is . . . another indicator of the condition of the vehicle. The dashboard is not cracked and the headliner is intact, not sagging and without any holes or tears. SELLER'S NOTE: For the past few years, I have been researching this particular Chrysler model and to date, I have not found another example anywhere in the US so, I believe it is extremely rare, especially in this condition. In the late 1970's and early 1980's many of these big Chryslers were destroyed in Demolition Derby Exhibitions so, they are hard to come by . . . especially two-door coupes and ESPECIALLY the "Special Edition" model. The only reason I am selling the car is because I lost access to satisfactory storage and it is too nice a vehicle to be sitting outside. It really belongs in a private museum. PAYMENT AND SHIPPING: READ AND UNDERSTAND THE FOLLOWING . . . FULL payment required within SEVEN days of close of auction. The only form of acceptable payment will be an Official Bank or Cashier's Check from a recognized, commercial institution. The vehicle will not be released to the buyer or transporter until the funds have cleared my account. Shipping to the new owner's destination is the responsibility of the buyer. I will store the vehicle free-of-charge for 30 days after the sale date but, a daily storage fee of $15.00 will be charged thereafter. By bidding on this vehicle you agree to abide by these terms. The vehicle is sold AS-IS, with no warranty implied or otherwise stated.
