He happily got his fill of the open road, and is now moving on to the open waters. Which is why he is letting go of this machine -- to make room for a sail boat he has his eye on. Joe is a no-frills kind of guy. He likes his machines straightforward and responsive. And that is exactly what you get with this R-series Twin roadster: Superb handling with its low center of gravity and plenty of normal-load ground clearance (6.7 inches) on the low-profile tires, BMW reliability, and perks like BMW hard and soft luggage, bike cover, service and repair manuals, owner's manual, and extra keys. Not to mention the full, robust set of BMW tools and a little something extra in the form of a Works Shocks shock (with setup, mounting, and adjustment instructions) for the backyard mechanic who may wish to do some playing. We sold this bike to Ken, a fellow from Canada. Ken has a little personal challenge. During the freezing long winter in Canada (brr), he was always on the Internet. Towards the end of winter there in Canada he was going to buy himself one bike, come down, take a great relaxing bike road trip back home. He watched bikes over the many months of winter while he zero 'd in on the best bikes. He bid on several bikes, and, he honed it to two bids, kept bidding, and won two bikes. He can only drive one back when he comes down from Canada this next Friday on 5/27/2011. So, being that Ken has two bikes he bought, he thought to put both bikes up for sale separately before he comes. Whichever one sells first, he will have the other to take back. This is best one of those two great bikes. A real chance for you to get a real collectable bike for less, as Ken can not drive two bikes to Canada, so he must sell one. Your chance to own this bike. Know that this Boxer has been owned by three BMW fans in the clement weather of Texas and Florida only. A smooth ride through the Appalachian Mountains in the springtime was Joe's favorite memory with his bike. And least favorite for the guy who likes uncomplicated was difficulty checking the oil with the dipstick so close to a hot engine. (See pics.) That proved to be no more than an annoyance for this lover of tradition, and was more than offset by the R100R overall retro styling coupled with modern components. Ken has never picked up either bike, not seen either bike, as he is just coming now. So, read on about these! Heck, Joe put on saddlebags, tank bags, luggage carrier at rear, and big gas tank with about a gallon reserve, you can just equip the handlebar grips for heat, grab a fellow free spirit for the dual seat, set your spring setting to 6pt, -- and those wide handlebars and natural posturing lend to making this dually quite the proficient and comfortable long-range machine. Just grab the keys and go for it! Speaking of keys, the ignition, fuel filler and storage compartments have identical locks. One folding-head master key and two rigid-head spare keys make up a set. The original had an easily removable locking pushbutton latch that was apparently too easily removed by a nefarious type while Joe's back was turned after he had taken out his tool kit housed beneath, and hadn't yet locked it back up. Pragmatic as always, Joe went for comfort over style for his replacement and got his hands on a seat that is the right seat, but had it covered so it doesn't crawl quite as high up the fuel tank as the original did -- but is also nicely shaped and padded to provide all-day comfort. Here you see the switch Joe installed so he was able to start his bike in other gears besides neutral. More about this is explained and demonstrated in one of our videos in the video gallery. The SUSPENSION BMW patented Paralever eliminates the chassis jacking effect common to most shaft drive bikes. It features two u-joints inside a single-sided swing arm and works in conjunction with a BMW-spec, built-by-Showa shock that offers spring-preload and rebound-damping adjustability for the drive train. This system is highly effective in eliminating the rise and fall of rear suspension upon acceleration and deceleration clutching. Here's how BMW describes it in their info-packed Rider's Manual (included in this transaction): Transmission from gearbox to rear wheel: Propeller shaft encapsulated in single swinging arm (BMW PARALEVER), with universal joints and integral torsion dampers at gearbox and output ends. Front wheel suspension Highly responsive telescopic fork with separate hydraulic compression and rebounding damping action, progressive spring rate and integral fork stabilizer Rear wheel suspension Adjustable swinging arm made from high-strength light alloy with thrust rod support (PMW Paralever) and gas-filled spring strut (Monoshock) with progressive overall rates, adjustable settings to suit loads. Comments - Knobs, levers, headlamps, wipers, tail lights, radio, etc have been checked by Team Vehltor and are in proper working condition, no worries! (If we found something it is described below in red text.) Styling: Exceptionally well done by BMW, and the owner add ons. Exterior: Exceptionally clean and cared for (as seen on the photos). Please review the complete text description in this ad for more details about condition of the exterior. Make sure to see the 100+ photos in the additional photo gallery. Mechanically: We noted a couple drops of oil on the floor probably from sitting on the side stand. It was here for two months, had absolutely zero leaks on center stand waiting for Ken to leave the freezing Canada to come get it. We would have noted it if it was leaking when it came in as the bike sits right up front in the window on our main showroom floor. See the Vehltor Virtual Vehicle Tour to hear the engine starting and see Joe whiz past on a quick zoom or two when he brought it in to us to originally assist him is the sale of it. Nothing else known is needed, save the couple of cosmetics (and couple oil drops pictured here) seen below in red. Please review the photos, videos and text description in this ad for other details. Make sure to see the many photos in photo gallery (click on Photo Gallery image located just below). Besides showing the tiny oil wet spot directly under the pan (from where me mentioned on the side stand), we thought it a good opportunity to show you that spring-loaded, self-retracting center stand on this BMW model. This bike also has the extra side stand as you can note in the photos. And below is as bad as it gets regards the small scratching on the valve cover and tubular frame. We had to go way low and shoot from underneath to capture it for you. And maybe if you looked hard, you may have noticed from the other photos, it is just not something that mars the great classic looks of this Boxer. A nice detailing will absolutely rock this ride and have even more rubbernecking going on as you cruise and meander about town. We don't recommend you go from 0-65 in 4.6 seconds -- but you could if you wanted to on this bike! Other Honorable Mentionables: Joe said that someone (he wouldn't disclose who!) let the handlebar go in a gravel parking lot, which resulted in scratches in the right-hand-side valve cover, and scratches on the guard. This blem in no way affects the performance of this bike. The fairing could use a light touch-up, paintwise, Joe says. BMW Touch Up Stick is available from any BMW dealer. The paint color is indicated on a decal on the frame below the dual seat. On this roadster the color code is marked as 678 Sitting on side stand ability has been added to this collectable BMW. (which was not optional from the factory new). The reason it was not an option is, when it is on side stand, the tilt of the bike on side stand causes oil droplets underneath. You may wish to replace the neutral position switch (but you do not have to), as the current one that Joe put on the handlebar center was to allow the bike to be started in any gear, not just neutral, which he personally enjoyed it that way. The American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association Ltd. (Your Guide to Vintage Racing in the United States) AHRMA is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to restoring and competing on classic motorcycles. With about 5,000 members, AHRMA is the largest vintage racing group in North America and one of the biggest in the world. The association has grown steadily over the years, reflecting the increasing interest in classic bikes. AHRMA traces its roots to efforts to organize vintage road racing during the late 1970's in the Northeast. In the early 80's, other groups began emerging around the nation, adding scrambles, observed trials, dirt track and concourse events to the competition options available for vintage riders. Among these organizations were the California Vintage Racing Group and, in the Southeast, the Historic Motorcycle Racing Association. By 1986, it was clear that a national organization would be necessary to administer this burgeoning sport. AHRMA was originally formed as a privately held business corporation. Other groups were brought together under one banner and one set of rules, and in 1989 AHRMA was reorganized into the member-owned association of today.
