Vehicle Detail
Up for sale is my solid, complete and original southern 1968 Pontiac Firebird. The dealer on emblem (see picture) indicates the car was originally purchased from Young Pontiac, a Mineral Wells Texas dealer. I purchased the car in Georgia in 2007 so to the best of my knowledge the car lived its life in the south. The car is an original 350 Pontiac / 2 speed automatic car with the Deluxe Parchment interior, A/C (not hooked up) and white vinyl top (gone before I got it). The car runs, drives and shifts good, is licensed and insured and I take it to work occasionally when the weather is nice. I bought it as a toy to play around with and fix up but I'm now off on a father son 63 Corvair project. The condition of the sheet metal supports the southern theory as it was very solid when I got it. The floor pans are solid and required no repair. The rear window or trunk seal leaked so I replaced the trunk floor. See the pictures of the problem areas around the rear window. The passenger front fender and door skin were replaced due to minor damage and not rust. I patched in a small piece of metal in the passenger rear quarter on the bottom rear edge of the wheel well. I primed and painted the car with Nason urethane single stage paint in the original Meridian Turquoise color. Keep in mind that I am an accountant by trade and not a welder, body man or painter but was willing to try all three. I was pleased for a first effort and it looks good in photos but there are plenty of flaws in the paint that I have tried to show in the pictures. The glass is all in decent shape with no cracks and the chrome bumpers are fair. It has a 350 Pontiac engine with an Edelbrock Performer intake and Holley 600 carburetor with electric choke. It has a chrome air cleaner, valve covers and all new belts and hoses. I have a 4V intake, two Carter carbs, original valve covers plus a few other odds and ends that go with the car. Compression tests range from a low of 142 on #8 to a high of 163 on #3 cylinder. It has headers and dual exhaust to the rear bumper with turbo mufflers. I converted from points to Pertronix electronic ignition with the matching coil. I removed the under hood A/C suitcase but I still have it and it goes with the car. The interior is serviceable but still needs some work. It has the 160 mph speedometer, 99K on the odometer, new carpet, headliner, package tray and under dash oil pressure and temperature gauges. It has an original AM radio mounted in the dash and a cheap AM/FM CD player mounted below the dash. I installed an aftermarket Grant steering wheel with Pontiac logo and still have the original cracked deluxe steering wheel to go with it. I also have the original console mounted tach that I had to remove to fit the new radio. It has a Painless wiring fuse box and wiring harness. It has a new ignition switch, wiper motor / washer, battery, etc. The door panels are from a 69' that I painted with vinyl dye - they look okay but are far from perfect. The seat were recovered at some point and are okay for a driver but the drivers seat has some tears. It has all new weather stripping and molding around the doors, windows, hood and trunk. The car has a set of 14x7 Pontiac Rally II wheels and a 14x6 Rally II as a spare. The tires on the car are 235/60R/14 B.F. Goodrich Radial T/A's. The brakes were gone through and the master cylinder, wheel cylinders, shoes and hardware were replaced. This is a very nice driver that can be enjoyed as you tinker and improve. Keep in mind that it is still a 43 year old vehicle that is far from perfect and I have tried to take pictures to show its flaws. Please feel free to contact me with any questions and I'll respond as promptly as I can. I can make arrangments to show in person as well. Known Issues: · Paint - Dirt, runs and metallic stripe on hood. · Transmission leaks - I replaced the main seal but I have not got around to replacing the pan gasket. · Electric choke needs adjustment. · Starter needs a shim. · Rear end periodically makes a clunking noise when decelerating.
