Vehicle Detail

Due to having too many cars and not enough space, I'm offering my 1986 Subaru Brat GL for auction. This is a three-owner car with a great engine and drivetrain and straight, solid body. If you're familiar with these cars, you'll know that rust is a real killer on them; this one does not suffer from that particular problem, and the mileage is believed to be accurate at a low-for-its-age 127,400. Virginia State inspection is current through October of this year. In the just over two years that I have owned it, the mechanical side of things has been gone through extensively. It ran well when I got it, but as is typical with vehicles of its age and mileage there were items that needed attention - but everything works as you would expect it to. The following have been repaired or replaced: Engine: adjusted valves, rebuilt carburetor, replaced fuel filters. Replaced leaking-but-functional oil pressure sender with OEM unit. Note that this vehicle has the EA81 engine, which uses gear-driven valve timing - there are no timing belts or chains to replace. Ignition: new coil, distributor cap and rotor, reluctor, ignition pickup module, and vacuum advance unit. Cooling system: new radiator and thermostat. This car has not been overheated in the time that I have owned it, but the original radiator developed a pinhole leak requiring replacement. Transmission: new clutch and clutch cable; both front CV axles replaced. Synchros (another traditional weak spot) on all four forward gears and reverse work exactly as they should, as does four wheel drive in both high- and low-range. Exhaust: new front section, including gaskets and catalytic converter. EGR valve was also replaced. Middle and rear sections are in good shape. Brakes: replaced master cylinder, rear wheel cylinders, fitted new pads and shoes. Discs and drums were turned and pull straight without signs of warps. Electrical: new alternator. Suspension: new Monroe struts and OEM springs at the front; new KYB shocks at the rear. Tires: four 185/70R13 Cornell 1000s with approximately 8,000 miles on them and a matching full-size spare on a junkyard rim. The original space-saver spare in excellent condition is included. Oil and filter changes have been performed every 3,000 miles with high-mileage oil; coolant has been replaced annually with Prestone 50/50. Transmission and rear differential oils were changed approximately one year ago. Window and T-top seals do not leak. There are a few upgrades on this vehicle. The factory stereo was replaced by the previous owner with a Pioneer DEH-1700 AM/FM/CD unit, and I have an original Subaru AM/FM cassette unit in the correct enclosure that also comes with the car. A rollbar with a pair of Hella 500 driving-beam spotlights mounted to it has also been fitted, and the front seats have been replaced with leather seats from an Outback. A custom-cut heavy rubber mat covers the floor of the cargo area. Now for the one downside: the paint. You've probably noticed from the photographs that there are areas where it is peeling. The previous owner resprayed the car himself, but there are clearly some areas where it was not prepped correctly before painting. On the plus side, these areas are not rusting, probably helped by the fact that it was not driven during Winter in order avoid rust caused by road salt. It will eventually need attention, however. So there you have it - a basically ready-to-drive anywhere trucklet that needs to find an owner with the same enthusiasm as I have for these interestingly different vehicles. This is the third one I've owned over the years, and, paint aside, is the one I wish I'd been able to start with as it's one of the better examples still available. Happy bidding, please ask any questions you may have before bidding, and best of luck! Terms and conditions: a deposit of 10% of the final auction price is due within 72 hours of auction end, with the remainder due at or before collection of the vehicle. Cash, a personal check, or cashier's check are accepted forms of payment only; vehicle will not be released to the buyer or buyer's agent until checks or other instruments have cleared. Buyer assumes responsibility for post-sale fees related to title transfer, registration, and/or transport of the vehicle, and understands that the vehicle is being sold in as-is condition. Actual mileage at time of sale may be slightly higher as the vehicle is being used and driven regularly. A clear Virginia title for the vehicle is in my possession, and there are no liens or outstanding fees levied against the vehicle. Seller will gladly assist with loading of the vehicle if transport is required. On May-15-11 at 10:39:28 PDT, seller added the following information:Please be sure to scroll down to the 'Questions and answers about this item' section after the photos - there are a couple of common questions relating to air conditioning and the mileage report that I've provided answers to in there. Thanks! On May-16-11 at 13:59:03 PDT, seller added the following information:Per a few requests, pictures of the engine bay have been added. On May-19-11 at 14:39:11 PDT, seller added the following information:With 24 hours to go, the the Buy It Now price has been lowered to $4000. Given that a Brat with over twice the mileage and unknown mechanical condition sold a few days ago for $4250, this represents an excellent value!
