Vehicle Detail
A VERY unique find. How many Mustangs did Ford build each day in the first six weeks of production? A few hundred? How many were built on April 17th, 1964??? That is what we're looking at here. A launch day Mustang! The build date code of 17D equates to April 17th. The day you could go to your Ford dealer and actually buy or order your Mustang, as over 22,000 people did that day! This car was the first Mustang convertible sold in our hometown of Bloomington Indiana. It was used for local events in '64 such as the Mall grand opening and fourth of July parade. The dealer, Tom O'Daniel Ford, used it for as many promotional activities as they could until stock started rolling in to meet the demand. This car saw a total ground up restoration in 1998-99. It was done as a period era restomod. It looks like a '65 GT. It was built to be a driver, although it saw numerous awards on it's first couple years on the show circuit. The car was in need of a total restoration when we purchased it in '98. It has sat outside for a number of years and was used as a daily driver for 20+ years when purchased new. The mid-west winters were not kind to the lack of any rust protection Ford provided back in the day. When we got the car, a hard decision was made to even restore it. If not for the build date and the local history, the car might have been scrapped. Thankfully, it wasn't, but at a GREAT expense. To get the car rust free, the following were replaced: - full floor pans, driver and passenger - firewall extensions, driver and passenger -front torque boxes, driver and passenger -inner and outer rockers, driver and passenger -full quarter panels, driver and passenger -inner and outer rear wheel wells, driver and passenger -trunk drop offs, driver and passenger -trunk rear panel -rear cowl -rear frame rails, driver and passenger -rear torque box top, driver side -inner driver side fender -passenger fender -stone guard -all bumpers and guards -front valance -rear GT valance In all, we had the entire car stripped, sandblasted and welded back together by one of Indiana's most reputable body shops, Tony Kinser of Bloomington Indiana. Many pictures are included showing the progress of the body reconstruction. After the work, we primed the body with acid etch primer, then two coats of urethane primer and then sealed the top and bottom with two part catalyst truck bed liner thinned 20% to provide a smooth surface. The car is literally sealed in plastic! After we received the completed shell back from Kinser Body Shop, we began re-assembly. Nearly every part on the car was replaced, both inside and out. We have nearly all receipts totaling well over $30,000, not including the 1000+ hours of labor by the owners. Although some TLC is still needed on this car, someone is going to get an INCREDIBLE STEAL!! These are the things done on re-assembly: Exterior: -paint done with DuPont Chroma base/clear in '66 candy apple red -GT appearance package with emblems, stripes, etc. -Style Steel Wheels with Dunlop GT whitewall radials -Original Carlight windshield replaced - Stainless steel luggage rack -GT exhaust trumpets and GT rear valance -GT fog lightsInterior -red/white pony interior with red/white custom standard door panels from TMI -Custom red/white Pony upholstery on '86 Mustang GT seats, with matching rear upholstery from TMI - original console added - '66 5 gauge instrument panel added - '65/'66 flat glove box door added - Custom Autosound Stereo with stereo dash speakers and '65/'66 door speakers added - carpeted embroidered floor mats and Pony rubber floor mats included - white and red boot cover included Suspension - 650# springs in front - 1" sway bar front - KYB front shocks painted black - urethane bushings - ALL suspension components replaced with quality components from Moog, etc. - new 15:1 competition style steering box installed - KYB rear shocks painted red - Disc brake conversion on front -new brakes in rear - DOT 5 silicon brake fluid -rear 3/4 inch sway bar Drive train - engine had all external gaskets replaced, but ran great! - full Cobra dress up kit with valve covers, air cleaner, chrome coil, etc. - 5 speed conversion, T5 installed with period correct lever and shift knob m(original 3 speed included) - Edlebrock Performer intake installed - Edlebrock 500 cfm four barrel carb installed - Tri Y headders - dual exhaust with Dynomax Turbo mufflers and H-pipe 21/4" -Mallory electronic "under the cap" ignition The car does need a little TLC and some things done to make it perfect. It drives and rides just fine as it however. Some things that need attention are the main dash wiring harness, which was never replaced during the restoration. Components added since such as the gauges, fog lights, stereo, etc. have not been kind to it's condition. The top never did fit correctly at the front corners of the vent windows, most likely and adjustment to the frame. The corners of the doors are starting to bubble slightly from previous repair. The top itself has two small pinholes in it from being down too much, the tires are 12 years old now and even though they have around 2000 miles on them, all tires should be replaced after 10 years. The replacement fender on the passenger side has fitment issues. All in all, these are minor issues. It won't take much to make this car a nice driver/show winner. Most would think it's one of the neatest Mustangs they've ever seen! View the pictures. Come and inspect the vehicle. If you don't think this is an incredible car at a "fire sale" price, then...... We have well over $30,000 invested in this car. Reserve is less than HALF that!!! PRICED TO MOVE QUICKLY!!! Check my feedback. I've bought and sold over 15 cars on e-Bay and have had satisfied people everywhere! I sell what I describe and stand behind it!
