Vehicle Detail
Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 The Bike: The auction is for a 1976 BMW R75/6 motorcycle in running, street-legal, operating condition with a clear title. History: Anyone (except for a one-owner) who tries to tell you they know the entire past history of a 35-year old vehicle is not being honest with you. Here is what I do know. This bike was sold new from Fitzgerald BMW Cycle in Manchester & Concord, New Hampshire. Sometime after that it made its way to Florida where a really sleazy, unscrupulous eBayer sold it to my brother in Ohio. Upon taking delivery and evaluating its condition he decided it was more of a “project” than he was interested in and gave it to me. I took it to Gina’s BMW in Iowa City and told them to “make it work, make it safe, make it right” which they did for me to the tune of over $3000 in parts and labor. (The list of new parts runs over three pages long). What I got back was this really great classic airhead that is a pure joy to own and ride. Why I’m selling it: Over this past brutal Iowa winter I restored a 1973 Honda 450CB which is more in line with the type of motorcycle riding that I do (short trips around town). I don’t need two bikes so the road bike needs to go; it’s that simple. Condition: This bike starts and runs beautifully. Everything that needed tuning, adjusting, tweaking, replacing, setting, tightening or working on was done by factory-trained BMW professional mechanics. Since I’ve owned it, it has been garage-sheltered and had a Battery Tender on it when not riding. (We don’t ride in northern Iowa during the eight months of winter so I’ve only put about 500 miles on it since all of the mentioned work was done). Listed below are some of the items. Fuel System: The tank has no dents or rust; the gas cap seals tightly. The tank inside was cleaned and sealed, carburetors completely overhauled with all new inside parts, new braided fuel lines, new fuel petcocks (both sides). Wheels: New Metzeler tires front and rear, new tubes; mounted and balanced. Engine & Transmission: New plugs, points, condenser, fluids, filters splines lubed, gaskets and seals replaced (as needed), engine oil (20W50 Castrol) & BMW filter; everything adjusted and brought to specs. Exhaust: New mufflers, seals and clamps. Electrical: New battery, switches (handlebar), bulbs (as needed). Front Forks: Overhauled, new seals & fluid, new rubber fork boots. The Good, Bad & Ugly: This bike is 35 years old and at some point in its life it had owners that didn’t protect it from the elements. It’s always tough buying something by only looking at pictures and reading a written description so here’s some things that might not stand out for you. The paint (tank, fenders, side-covers) looks pretty good in the pictures but it is rough with a lot of imperfections and aging. It doesn’t bother me-I like the aged-patina look but know going into this that the paint is really rough. There is some pitting on some of the chrome parts. Some of the aluminum (never meant by BMW to “shine”) is oxidized and dull. Like all Beemers, the speedometer/odometer mileage meters work only when they feel like it. (The ground-speed needle and tach work just fine). The mileage reads 10K but I know that is not accurate; I have no idea how many miles are actually on the bike. It has a tiny (dime-size) leak on the floor below the shift arm when you shut it off after a ride. That’s about it; with those faults listed and imperfections you can see in the pictures-this is otherwise ONE SWEET RIDE! Legal: I have a clear Iowa title (in my name) with no liens or obligations against it. If you are the high bidder (above Reserve) when the auction ends-you just bought yourself a bike! You can see from my 2000+ feedback that I deal up-front and fairly with everyone I come into contact with-I expect the same from my potential buyers. Look at the pictures and read the description many times before you bid. Payment: Payment is to be in the form of a Certified Check (drawn on a major national bank; Wells Fargo, US Bank, etc.) or a USPS Money Order. These are the only two forms of payment I will accept and I need payment-in-full within seven (7) calendar days of the end of the auction. Bike Pick-Up: Pick-up of the bike is the responsibility of the buyer and I’d like it gone within 10 days of the end of the auction. If you hire a transport service, I will work with their schedule but will not crate or pallet the bike for you or them. If you bring a helmet, fly into the Waterloo (not Cedar Rapids) Airport, I’ll pick you up and you can ride it home. Delivery: If you want, I will deliver the bike to your house. The charge would be .75 cents per loaded mile (based upon Map Quest mileage-my address to yours). This amount would need to be pre-paid (Certified Check or USPS Money Order) before I leave with your bike. (I’ll take it anywhere in the country except the East & West coasts-your traffic is crazy)! FYI, Some typical questions I usually get asked: Will you tell me the Reserve? No, but I will tell you it is reasonable for this bike. Will you end the auction early and do a “Buy It Now” for me? No, the auction will run to the end. Will you take cash on the day I pick it up? No, I don’t deal with cash. Will you trade it for (fill in whatever is sitting up on blocks behind your garage)? No. Will you store it for me? Yes, up to 10 days after the auction.
