Vehicle Detail
Restored - 1940 Plymouth P10 Business Coupe NO RESERVE Thank you for viewing my 1940 Plymouth Deluxe P10 Business Coupe. This is a great car, it has been here in the Salem, Oregon area all of its life. Bought new here in Salem, at Salem Automobile Company, Inc - Chrysler & Plymouth. If you are from this area, it was on the Corner of Marion St. and Commercial, all the mainstream dealers were on this street, McKay Chevrolet, Wilson Buick, Warner Motors - Lincoln Mercury and various other dealers, what a great time. I show a picture of the dealership in 1948 in this auction. There is an original Salem Automobile Co, Oil Change metal plate on the drivers door jam, that has a date of August 22, 1945. This car has had 3 owners, I only know the last owner, I bought a 1936 Ford Coupe about 4 years ago, and came across this Plymouth, and hoped to be able to have it in my garage one day, and recently I have been able to acquire it, and it is better then I ever hoped it would be, this is a great car, and extremely hard to find in this condition. It is believed that this car has 45,800 original miles on it. I do not have documentation on this, but I believe it could be considering the condition of some of the original parts, and the overall condition of this car. If nothing else this is one of the cleanest original sheetmetal cars that I have owned from the 1940's. This cars body panels and alignment are in amazing condition for a car that is over 71 years old! There is very little body fillers if any on this P10. The last owner who has now since passed, told me a few years ago, that when he bought it from the 2nd owner, that the car was parked in the 1950's in dry storage. And then was sold to the 2nd owners who restored in in the 1990's, but that gentleman fell in bad health shortly after completing the restoration. The car had just been pretty much been restored and completed I am guessing around 1999. You will see underneath the car in my photo's it had little road time since 1999 if any, I know the gentleman that I got it from, only took it out a couple times since 2002. I did not repaint underneath the car, it is this clean underneath, this was a body off restoration at that time. Check out the leather covers over the driveline joints. The paint is in very nice shape. It has only been repainted once, and was taken off the frame when painted. It was resprayed in original 1940 Aviator Blue, a beautiful color, many of these car you see in gray. Overall the paint is in good shape, it has a little patina, but it has a really nice shine, and when out in the sun if glows. There are a few small chips, that have been touched up. The most notiable one, is on the passenger door down low on the front edge, the door opened up to far, and lightly touched the fender, and chipped the edge, it has been touched up, but since it is so low, you really have to be looking for it. On the front drivers light, on the top edge, there is a little crazing and paint cracking, just slightly, I think someone over tightened the headlight ring. Over all paint is in great shape, but has aged little like many lacquer paints do. There are no dings or dents on the car, very clean. When it was restored they wanted it to be original like it would have been done in 1940. I included a paint paint chip of the colors from 1940 Plymouth cars. The chrome on the car is really nice, and in great shape, there are no dings or dents in the chrome and stainless. It had all new rubber gaskets around all the windows, and the glass in this car is in really nice shape, no cracks, no seperations, very good. Overall the exterior is nice, and shows well, it is not perfect, but in very good shape. Interior is in good shape for its age. I do have all the keys for all the locks, door, Rear entry door behind seat, trunk, ignition, and they all work. The door panels are original and worn. The seats were kind of a blessing. The seats had a set of covers that were on them in another material to protect them. I thought that they were ripped up and needed to be redone. I noticed that underneath the covers, I could see the pleats on the bottom seat. I took a chance and removed the covers and found that the seats were actually in really usable shape as you see. I had someone look at them, and they know that they are Mohair, and could be the original material. If you look at the underneath of the seat, all the springs are original and very nice, and everything is done like original. I think they are to nice to be original, but then again the car was parked for many years, and the seats were covered for many years. The headliner is original to the car, and in good shape for its age. There are a few small holes around the rear window but pretty minor, i would never change it, I like it original. I do have the original front floor rubber mat that will go with the car. The mat will need a new heal pad. The rear package tray, and spare tire cover and to get into the trunk area are all original. The dash area is all original and in great shape. All the gauges work, I took pictures of everything while driving so you could see it. The only thing that I don't have working is the windshield wipers, they are vacuum operated, sometimes I can see them move a little, but I have not tried to really make them work and see what is going on. The underdash heater works great. All the lights work, high beams, marker lights, lic. plate light, brake lights. The vintage fog lamps are not wired, so not sure if they work or not. Overall, interior is nice, but has wear on the seats and door panels. There has been some moth's eating away at the fibers on the bottom of the seat cover, see pictures. Mechanically it is in good shape, with very little miles on it. Engine was rebuilt back in the 90's, as well as transmission, has new clutch, overall it had a mechanical restoration during that same time. Engine is the original Plymouth 201 inline 6. I did a compression check, and all of them range from 91-95 psi, which is correct for one of these cars, they had 6.7:1 compression with 84 hp. It starts up nicely, and idles nicely. Since it has been sitting for a while, it could use a good upper engine detail, and the original carburator could use a good cleaning, but it is useable as is and can been driven with ease currently. It has a NOS Auto-lite correct Coil, that I just installed, and also had correct metal core spark plug wires with the right resistance for a 6 volt system. It has brand new spark plugs, points, condenser, cap, rotor, and a new battery. Fresh SAE 30 weight oil just changed and radiator and engine have been flushed with fresh Prestone Antifreeze and water. The Generator charges nicely. The brakes work good, you can be going 50mph and take your hands off the wheel and it comes to a nice straight stop. Emergency brake works as well. Overall a good runing little engine. When it first starts up it smokes just a little bit, but leaves pretty quickly. Clutch also feels excellant, and it shifts nicely. There is a a small oil leak on the front of the pan, I can see a little sepage around a couple of the pan bolts, probably from sitting for the last few years. I have not tired to tighten them up as of yet, just noticed a few little spots on my floor. The exhaust is in good shape, no leaks. The suspension feels very good for a 1940's car, notice also the original metal dust covers over the rear springs, pretty neat. The original wheels have been restored as well, and look really nice. The spare rim was restored as well, and has the original spare tire on it still. The tires are BFG wide white bias ply, and looks to be in good shape. I have driven the car a lot and they feel good, and did not feel any issues with flat spots. Overall mechanically it is in nice shape and dependable. ABSOLUTELY - NO RUST, ALL ORIGINAL DETROIT STEEL. Overall this is an older restoration on a very original car, much of the car has been restored with original and NOS parts. This is not a perfect car, but if you are looking for something you can drive and enjoy, and take to shows, then this is the car for you. If you are looking for a Concours, of Trailer queen this is not the car for you, but it is a nice car for sure. 503-910-2085 - Jason - Blue Oval Ranch Inc. - Salem, Oregon - DA0612 Terms are pretty Simple, if you can pay for it, within the time I allow, and can follow the guidelines, then please bid, if you can't then don't. Back in 1956 these plates were put on the car, everyone got new plates back them, because of Oregon Plate changes, and had to have the 1956 Lic. I love every view of this car all the way around. Rear tailights are really neat, they are on, and are original glass. Also notice the detail of the bumpers and the oval bumper bolts. Showing the headlights are working. The fog lamps are not wired. All the gauges work, I am driving it, see next picture and you can see the speed I am going, upper picture the needle is blocked by the steering wheel, also notice the odometer works as well, upper reads 45,836, and lower picture reads 45,839. THANKS AND HAPPY BIDDING!!!! - NO RESERVE 503-910-2085 - Blue Oval Ranch Inc - Jason Anderson On Feb-19-11 at 09:21:18 PST, seller added the following information: Forgot to put these pictures in, so you could see the factory floor, that allows you to take it off, and work on the transmission as well if needed, wish new cars did this. Also took it off so you could see the outer condition of transmission and components, and that the frame was painted completely. Original Salem Automobile Co. Chrysler - Plymouth, Oil Change and Service metal plate on the drivers door jam, that has a date of August 22, 1945. The car was bought new at this dealership in 1940. On Feb-23-11 at 13:28:19 PST, seller added the following information: Auction has 5 days left, and it is the 2nd highest watched car on ebay right now, with 372 watchers pretty cool. Decided today to try out making a little video to show the car running, and driving, also the windshield wipers do work, I just wasn't doing it right before. I will get better at taking better videos in the future a little fuzzy, just using my camera and pretty overcast. Hopefully you will get a feel of the car running. Also the fan switch under the dash, by the emergency brake, I show a little knob in the other pictures, it lights up when on as well. Horn works as well, in one of the short videos, I tap it a little so you can hear it, should have laid on the horn but I didn't, didn't want to get that little dog yapping again in the background. Give me a call if you have any question, Thanks Jason 503-910-2085
