Vehicle Detail
I recently purchased this original unrestored 1928 Willys-Overland Whippet Model 96 Coach on ebay. My reason for selling is that I would rather have a restored car to go on local drives with club members who own Fords and Chevys of the same era. The Whippet is a very nice and solid car. It would be an easy restoration for someone who had the space and time. I have come to the realization that I do not have the space and time for this scale of work. I wish I did because it’s such a nice car. The Whippet has been in storage for many years. The immediate previous owner purchased the car from a long-time owner who purchased it from the original owners on Put In Bay Island in Ohio. The odometer shows 29,790 miles and is believed to be accurate, but the speedometer does not work at this time. The car is equipped with its original 4 cylinder engine, manual 3-speed transmission, and 4-wheel mechanical brakes. The immediate previous owner removed the gas tank and had it boiled out. The gas lines were cleaned and a new electric fuel pump was installed. Also, he had the Zenith carburetor rebuilt, changed the engine oil, cleaned the spark plugs, installed a new battery, and adjusted the clutch (which should be checked again). This Whippet starts right up and runs very well. It operates and drives fine. The brakes stop and hold the car. The radiator is the original honey comb style and it is exceptional for the age. The fins are as nice as I've seen on an original car. The interior seat cushions and door panels were reupholstered probably back in the 60's and the dash and headliner are original. The outside top material appears to have been replaced but the top material has a few small tears in the back where it scraped a garage door (see photo). The original wood steering wheel is excellent. The body of the car is very solid with all its original metal, except for the running board splash aprons, which were replaced with wood. You can’t tell from the outside because they are connected to the wood running boards and covered with running board material. Someone did a nice job, but the original splash aprons were steel. Replacements are available from Howell’s Sheetmetal Co. I noticed the driver’s side front fender brace is missing under the fender. The radiator splash apron will need some repair (see photo). There is a small dent on the top of the cowl (see photo). On the passenger side, there is a little rust on the bottom of the cowl (see photo). The passenger side front fender has had some repair work (see photo) and will need some repair close to where it connects to running board (see photo). The paint appears to be mostly original. The floor boards and the underside of the car look to be in very good shape with minimal wear. The car has jeweled cowl lights, interior rear view mirror, side mirror, an early accessory turn signal unit on the steering column, and a set of accessory or aftermarket bumpers. The Willys-Overland Whippet automobiles have quite a following and are becoming more collectable every year. Original cars like this are not as easy to find as they once were and this one will make someone a fun little driver. The car is available for your inspection prior to bidding. If you have a zero rating or excessive negative feedback, please contact me before bidding or your bid will be removed. A $500, non-refundable, down payment is due via PayPal within 24 hours of the winning bid.
