Vehicle Detail

1978 Pontiac Trans Am SE Y88 Special Edition T/A, PHS Historical Services Documented, Original Build Sheet, Copy of Window Sticker, Vin Stamped #'s Matching L78 Pontiac 6.6 & #'s M33 Auto Transmission, G80 Posi Rearend... NO RESERVE Thank you very much for taking the time to view my auction on this 1978 Pontiac Trans Am - Y88 Special Edition. This Trans Am was bought new right here in Oregon, at McKee Pontiac Inc, Oregon City, Oregon. It has stayed in the Portland area all of its life. There are some great cars that come out of Oregon, because of our Mild Climate, we do not salt the roads in the winter, and have cool summers, and many cars here have been preserved, which is great for a car like this T/A. The original owner gave it to his son around 2002, and had been his car up until the last few months. This car is in very good restorable shape, this is a car that you can actually drive right now and enjoy, it is very dependable, and could be used as a daily driver if you wanted to. This is a pretty special car in general, it was ordered with the Y88 Special Edition Gold, the reverse package of the Black SE cars.. This car is numbers matching, which means that it does have its original engine and transmission, the VIN is stamped on both, if you are going to restore a car, it is important if at all possible to start with a numbers matching car so your investment will be maximized. The Odometer reads 73,690 assume it has rolled over at least once. This car is over 33 years old, and for the most part is in pretty good shape for its age. I have documentation from PHS, that this is one of the Factory Y88 Special Edition cars, I recieved from them the original copy of the Order sheet, also orded a new reproduction window sticker for it, I have the original build sheet, and have documented everything in the auction for you to see. This is not a show car, but a very solid car that looks good from 20 feet away. The bird on the hood, is original, the hood has not been repainted it is original. The rest of the car was repainted in the early 90's, and is showing its age, the paint is shiny, but has plenty of patina. The engine was rebuilt in 2002, and installed around 2004, the original L78 engine currently has about 10,000 miles on it, and is in great shape. This car was orded with some great options as well, Y88 Special Edition, M33 Transmission, G80 Posi Rear, Air Conditioning (missing Pump and bracket), Power windows, Cruise Control (not hooked up), 8 Track Am/Fm (replaced now with an aftermarket Kenwod), Tilt Wheel, T-tops etc. CONDITION: The body in this car is very sound, and in good shape. The paint is in decent shape but has lots of patina. It is a car that looks good from about 20' due to its age. As you come closer, you will see little chips a few small dings, and small scratches. The hood is original paint, and so is the bird. There is some rust bubbles on the passenger fender, down low. There is a small bubble, behind the passenger side rear wheel in the bottom corner. The rest of the body looks great, no bondo abuse, that I can find. It most likely will have some bondo here and there, since it was repainted. Inside the fenders, and quarters all look pretty clean, no signs of any accidents, taillight panel looks to be in good shape, front frame rails and rear frame rails look clean as well. Trunk area is clean, no rust issues. Floors look very good, and very clean from underneath, they are very solid, no pin holes etc. The car could use new rubber gaskets around doors, windows etc, because they have aged. The channels around the T tops look good, I have had them off, and they are clean. The T tops are correct for the Special Edition as well, with a small hugh of Gold Tint. All the exterior lights work, blinkers, reverse, etc. There is one clear lens, missing for the Lic Plate light, on the drivers side rear. The glass is all in good shape, no broken glass, no rock chips. Overall, the body looks nice, but this is not a show car, you will repaint the car in the future. The front and rear bumper covers look good, not broke, but each corner has been bumped, and chipped off the paint. Interior is original as far as I can tell. The seats are worn as you can see, front and back. Headliner has a tear in it. Dash pad is in good shape, no cracks from the front of it, but where it meets the front panel in the center, the edge is curled up a little and has some small cracking, this area is up by the front windshield vents. The center console is in good shape, but the armrest door has lots of cracking and needs recovered or replaced. Yes some one put speakers in the door panels. All the gauges work good, you can see them all working in the photos. The Kenwood radio does work good. The heater controls are not working or at least the Heater Fan will not come on, occasionally it will turn on but there must be a bad connection. There is a factory little toggle switch in the dash that is broken, for a Antenna, but the car has no Antenna. The Horn does not work currently. I know that it also had a new heater core put in 2004, I have paperwork on that. At the same time they put new carpet in it. It has power windows they roll up and down with ease, the drivers side is a little noisy, but it works good. The Clock works, and the cigarette lighter works as well. Overall the interior is useable, but it needs a good restoration, to make it nice again. The drivetrain seems to be in pretty good shape. As I mentioned before, the original engine was rebuilt in 2002, and installed in 2004. It is in good shape, took off the valve covers, to replace the gaskets they were leaking a little, and also wanted to look at how clean the heads were, and they are really nice, took a picture so you could see. Engine sounds good, and idles nice. It has a high rise aluminum intake, and a Edlebrock Polished 600 Carberator. The engine is a YU Pontiac 400, and for the most part is pretty well stock. The engine does not make burn and oil and does not blow any smoke. It has a new Altenator on it, but I made sure to keep the Dual AC pulley. The car is equiped with Factory AC, but the Pump and the Braket were removed, pretty easy to find a replacement down the road, all the rest of the AC looks to be pretty complete. It also has factory Cruise Control, but is disconnected, because of the aftermarket carb, and needs the linkage modified to use the Cruise. It needs the Snorkle Hose, and the small black fender well box that it connects to as well. Overall under the hood is in good shape for what it is. The transmission is the original VIN stamped, M33 Automatic, and it is in good shape, shifts nicely, and a pleasure to drive. The reared is orignal, G80 Posi-trac. The brakes work good, and it stops nice and straight. I have never had the wheels off the car, so I have not visiually inspected them, but they seem in good shape. Battery was bought about 3 months ago 9/10. The tires are in great shape, with around 95% tread. Overall, mechanically it seems to be in good shape, not perfect by anymeans, because it has been a driver pretty much its whole life, and no one has ever tried to do a restoration on it. Just keep it up, so that it could be used like it should. This is the information that I got from PHS Historical Services, so I could document the car, some great information, this is the order sheet, for this T/A, next picture shows the Y88 Special Edition Gold. I ordered a Reproduction Window Sticker, from the PHS Historical Services, they faxed me a copy of it today 2/10/11, the actually copy that is in color is on its way to my shop and will be included with the car. Next picture shows some of the equipment on the car. Found this original build sheet under the drivers seat, had to actually piece it together, so it is glued to this piece of paper to preserve it and actually read it. This shows the C ED T/A GL, the rest of the build sheet in this area is mission obviously, so I just filled in what it would have said, Y88 Spec Ed T/A GL. This is a color photo copy of the original build sheet, the above picture is the actual build sheet, just made a photo copy to write the couple codes. VIN on the dash. Original Door Tag. This is the VIN number stamped on the passenger side in front of the black. This car is Numbers Matching, Engine, Transmission match the VIN on the car. A perfect car worthy of restoration, having a numbers matching car is very important when building a concours correct car. The YU on the block is correct as well, this code is used for the L78 - Pontiac 400 V8. Original Transmision in the car, this is the VIN stamped toward the rear of the transmission, hard shot to picture while in the car, but I got it. This is the Cowl Tag, notice that it does not say Y88, as you know on GM products in general, the Cowl tags don't say much, PHS Docs was extremely helpful, and the Build Sheet. I have a very vintage magazine collection, so included these 2 in the sale. One on the left is a June 1977, with a Gold Special Addition on the cover, also in this magazine is a Goodyear Ad, with a Black T/A. The magazine on the right, is a December, 1977 issue, and it has an ad inside, with a Gold SE T/A as well, lined up with Firebird, and Formula. This is the actual title, VIN number matches on the car as well. Here I am driving it down the street, you can see the clock in this picture, compared to the next picture, that it is working. Also the Fuel gauge, and Volts is working as well. All the gauges work, oil pressure is good, temp stays coo. On Feb-14-11 at 15:44:22 PST, seller added the following information: Recieved the Reproduction Window Sticker from PHS Historical Services today. This Special Edition Trans Am, came with some nice options.
