Vehicle Detail

1968 Saab De Luxe 96 - Factory Ford 4V Taunus SAAB - Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget NO RESERVE This is a 1968 Saab De luxe 96 Coupe, in great shape. It is an inviting little car, and very comfortable to drive and just feels great behind the wheel. This is not a perfect car, there is just something about it that gives everyone a warm and fuzzy feeling when you are around it though, like your old favorite sneakers. This car draws a lot of heads while driving down the road, it is so fun to drive something different from everyone else, most people do not know what it is, like it is some kind of alien. I have owned 3 of these cars and the influence of the Aeroplane design from Saab was really put into these cars. The term "Born from Jets" is true, once you drive one you will know what I mean, you feel like you are in a plane. I love the factory Saab/Ford Taunus V4 4 engine, since I am a Ford guy I feel right at home, very easy to work on, parts are easy to find, and these cars are very easy to work on for the most part. These cars were very popular in the 60's and 70's in all types of racing, SCCA, Hill Climbs, Rallye Events. These cars are very nimble, and even today you see them at all different kind of Vintage Motor Sports events. This car has always lived in the Willamette Valley, here in Oregon. It was bought new at Hayden Motors - Saab, in Lebanon, Oregon. I got a chance to talk to the Original owners best friend. While he was in Vietnam, he was in the U.S. Airforce, he was to come home in 1968. Since he was a Airman, he wanted a Saab, as other guys dreamed about coming home and buying a Muscle Car from the Detriot big 3 this gentleman dreamed about owning a Saab 96. So as soon as he got home he bought this little 1968 Saab 96. It still has the front and rear Oregon Airman Stickers on the front and rear bumpers. Condition of the car is good. We here in Oregon have very mild winters and cool summers, we do not salt the roads, which saved many of our cars compared to other parts of the U.S. This car is not rusty, it has awesome floors, rockers look great, all the supports underneath are in great shape, shock towers are in great shape, you will saved thousands of your hard earned dollars on a car like this, because of how solid the structure is. The paint on it is about 20 years old. It has a nice shine, but it is worn, there are many chips that have been touched up, but from 20' away it looks good, but when you come closer, you notice little things here and there. Overall, it is great because what you see is what you get, I am not a fan of new paint in general because you never know what the car is hiding. This car has a nice patina. Personally I would just do some touch up on a few of the panels that need repair and just drive and enjoy it. The hood in in good shape, there is a larger chip on it, on the passenger side, that has been touched up see picture. The drivers fender up front has a small dent that has been pushed out a little, but the paint is chipped up, the rest of the fender looks good. Drivers door looks good, has ding toward the mirrior. Drivers quarter panel is in good shape, but it does have a little filler, and there is a spot that has been touched up, someone cut the paint out of it at some point, you can see the rectangle areas. There are no rust bubbles, around the quarters, doors, rockers, or fenders very clean. Truck lid in in great shape. Passenger quarter panel is in good shape, there is one little hairline paint crack in the middle of the quarter, see picture. Passenge door is in nice shape, and the passenger fender is in nice shape as well. The roof is dent free, there is some micro blistering on the top. The gutters look in good shape. The drivers side gutter ins nice, but some of the paint has lifted a little, but has not cracked. Overall the body is sound, but could use a quick paint job in the future if you want it to look really nice. The interior is in nice shape. The seats redone about 10 years ago, but have very little wear, they were sown in the original pattern, you can see the little side pockets in the bucket seats. Who ever did them, were very good at what they do, the sticking and padding are are good workmanship. The dash pad has many cracks but has a dash cover. I live the little cup holders, though not original, they fit right in. The headliner is in great shape, and the sunvisors are excellant. The windlace needs to be replaced around the doors, it is worn, but these are easy to replace. Dash area is in very good shape, instruments all work, you can see them working in the pictures. I spent a lot of time making sure everything worked. The dome light is the only thing not working in the interior, you can turn it on, but it does not come on when you open the door. The blinkers work, brake lights, headlights, fog lamps all work. Windshield wipers work excellant, even the windshield wiper squirters and motor work great, and the Heater works Awesome!!! The reverse lights are not hooked up, you can push on the acuator and they turn on, it is not mounted on the upgraded transmission. The radio works great, I usually like original looking radios, but decided to leave this one because it sounds great, and can be easily be replaced down the road. Overall the interior is very comfortable, has original carpet in decent shape, but has some Swedish rubber snow and mud mats upfront that fit perfectly in the car. Mechanically it is in good shape. It has a brand new water pump on in it. The engine starts right up, and idles nicely. It does not burn any oil or blow any smoke, it is actually running in all the pictures. It looks to be the original engine to the car, the engine number is on the front pad. The transmission has been upgraded, it has the reinforced Web Saab Case. The front axle boots are in good shape, they are not cracked, and have been repacked with grease on both axles. It has new Rubber valve cover gaskets, which seal very good, and can be reused if you need to do valve adjustments. It has also been upgraded with a Weber Carburator as well. The brakes feel decent, and stop the car well. Brake lines look good as well. It has Lockhead Front Disc Brakes, and drums in the rear. The transmission is a 4spd on the column, and it shifts nicely. Reverse works well. It does have the Freewheel option on the transmission that Saab is know for on the 96 and 99 models. The tires in in great shape with great tread. They have been just installed and rebalanced. The Wheels are original, and have been restored and powdercoated in white. I do not know the miles on the motor, or if it has been rebuilt in the past, I imagine it has been rebuilt at least once. It does run good, and I have driven on 50-60 mile small trips and it does great. It is a car you can hop in right now and enjoy, and do upgrades as you go. This would make a great daily Driver, it gets great gas mileage, and would fit in at any Vintage Rally or Field Meet. The front Euro Plate, is something I put on for show while driving it around, this was given to me by a good friend, so it does not come with the car. Also the rear plate is my dealer plate. It does come with Oregon plates that have current tabs, so you can drive it anywhere you want until you get it registered in your state. This rack is included in the sale, it is new, and looks really nice on this little Saab. When the original owner came back from Vietnam, he was still in the Airforce, and put this sticker on the rear and one on the front. Saab Vin tag under the hood #499241 and color code, R2L, next picture is the Vin Stamping belind the drivers seat on the rear seat support. Engine ID stamping, 75329 Transmission Stamping, 183057 I took this picture while driving, showing all the gauges working. The clock does notwork. The radio does work, and sounds nice. In this picture above the gas pedal, you can see the FreeWheel pull lever. Only the DeLuxe Models for 1968 had rear pop out windows. I love this sticker, "Fossil Fuels are Yummy", I just chuckle everytime I look at it. On Jan-22-11 at 12:15:27 PST, seller added the following information: Had a question wanting to know if the wiper spray jets worked, this picture should answer the question. : ) It has a dash pad cover on it, as I mention in the auction, I thought it was glued down, but it velcro on it, so next picture shows the cracks. It needs a new one or used one. Meant to ad this picture of the touch up on the door. Nice grill area, a Swedish Car Badge or racing badge would look great on this cars grill area. Had question about shipping overseas, to Europe. Yes has good title, showed picture of it. The Vin matches on title and on car, all numbers are correct for easy export out of the USA. I will help with loading the car here on my end no problem, you are responsible for shipping cost and arrangements. If you need helping getting it to a shipping port in Los Angeles, the cost if around $600 enclosed, I have a shipper that takes my cars down there all the time.
