Unique Structure The Comanche is a monocoque (unibody) vehicle, an unusual form of truck design. Jeep designers based its body, styling, and suspension on the popular Jeep Cherokee model, which had been introduced about four years prior to our 1988 Comanche in this listing. AMCs Jeep engineering staff designed a subframe that connected to the modified Cherokee unibody structure to support the cargo box. Two such subframes were designed; one for the long-bed model, which appeared first, and a second, shorter version for the short-bed, which debuted for 1987. And this is where we get the six-foot bed size of the soon-to-be-classic Comanche in this listing. A word about the bumpers. Somewhere within the 23 years of the life of this jeep, the chrome bumpers got painted a glossy jet black paint that in this picture looks like a matte finish -- but make no mistake, gloss is boss! The last year of the Comanche in 92 was thanks to Chrysler taking over in 1986, and not wanting competition to its Dakota, so it finally axed the Comanche in 1992 after only a few thousand trucks had rolled off the Toledo, Ohio assembly line, which is where this one was manufactured. This Comanche is well constructed and was built to last. Any imperfections in the body would be that of a cosmetic nature. No signs of rust from looking underneath. This is one sturdy truck. The Jeep Comanche has now become a well sought after vehicle, due to its age and its rarity. And now, with the 1988 Comanches approaching 23 years old, they are becoming collector vehicles. The Comanche lives on. Some value the Comanche for its perceived durable drivetrain and uniqueness, and also in part because of its legacy as the last Jeep pickup. The last in the line of the seven main bearing AMC inline sixes, the 4.0 is regarded as one of the best 4x4 off-road engines. The 4.0 AMC six has many aftermarket parts due to its longevity and durability. Many of these engines are known to go more than 300,000 miles without rebuilding. Engine: The straight-six layout is the simplest engine layout that possesses both primary and secondary mechanical engine balance, resulting in relatively low manufacturing cost combined with much less vibration than engines with fewer cylinders. This engine was the strength in our military Jeeps, commonly called the iron horse. : Two years ago, in July 2008, the transmission was rebuilt and a new torque converter installed. A record of this two-thousand dollar expenditure and of other maintenance and repairs is shown above, and is included to show the care given to this Jeep. . Here we show the solid condition of a leaf spring whose longer length -- longer than the Cherokee model which the Comanche was based on -- allows for heavier loads to be safely carried in the six-foot bed. Also worth noting about the suspension: The Comanche uses the Cherokee front suspension, with coil springs and upper and lower control arms. The Cherokee and Comanche were the first Jeeps to use this new Quadra-Link suspension. It was argued that the coil springs allowed for greater ride comfort and axle articulation during off-road excursions. A trackbar is used to keep the axle centered under the truck. For the rear suspension, the truck uses leaf springs that are considerably longer than on Cherokees, which give Comanche good load-carrying capacity. Test Drive Data: Our Vehltor Test drive team took the Comanche on the road and found that this pickup handled very nicely and was a comfortable ride. The Comanche also has a Power Trans Button switch for the tranny that you can toggle between comfort and power. We turned it on and off, and did not notice any visible change while driving. The Power setting is for towing etc, the motor tachs up higher before transmission upshifting. The Comfort setting shifts at a lower RPM therefore conserving fuel economy.
