Vehicle Detail

I'm sad to see it go, but it's time to move on from my prized 1985 944. Well, some history is in order for a car in this immaculate condition so here it goes. It was originally bought in 1985 by a rather wealthy man in Atlanta, Georgia. He had a number of sports cars but picked up this 944 as his health began to degrade slightly. He made the choice to buy the 944 because of its supreme handling combined with easy driving and an automatic transmission. As his health continued to degrade, the 944 sat for some years until his death in early 2000. From his estate sale, Automobile Atlanta (a premiere Porsche restoration company in the area) purchased this 944 with around 24,000 miles on it. After doing some minor cleaning, they began entering the car into some concourse shows. It did fairly well but wasn't quite as perfect as they had hoped. When new, the car had been keyed by the gas cap. While it was repaired, it was still visible to the keen eye of the judges. Auto Atlanta, being unwilling to repaint the body panel, decided to sell the car. For some time, I had been a lover of all things Porsche, buying a 914 and restoring it before deciding I wanted something slightly more modern. Upon selling my 914, I noticed this pristine 944 and bought it. Not often do you have the chance to purchase a 944 with such low miles. I made the trip to Georgia and brought back my prize, not before changing the belts and having the car completely looked over. Everything seeming to be in order, I embarked on my trek back to Oregon. The car performed admirably the entire way back except for the strangest issue with the headlights. Once I got back, having little knowledge of the 944, I asked someone I knew had worked in a Porsche dealership some years back about it. He laughed, popped off the center of my steering wheel, and reseated the hi beam assembly attached to the blinkers. Problem solved. The 944 has treated me well over the years I've owned it now rolling in at about 40,000 miles. In that time, I've given it monthly waxings, 3,000 mile oil changes (obsessive I know), and only premium fuel. In addition to this, I've found some excellent technician to assist with the few issues I have had. Obviously, I'll give you the cards for both of the fine mechanics at A&P Specialties and Stuttgart Autotech. 2007: Cap, rotor, plugs, coil, wires all replaced. 2007: When swapping the brake pads and flushing the fluid, I discovered the calipers had developed a small amount of corrosion, shredding the seals. Stuttgart Autotech replaced all four calipers and the master cylinder to be on the safe side. Also installed new rotors all the way around with vented in the front. 2007.5: All cooling system hoses replaced to be on the safe side. Noticed small crack in radiator, it was replaced. Automatic transmission radiator is linked to main radiator so it was replaced as well. 2008: The stereo system was replaced at some point before I purchased it with this wretched sony. I wasn't keen on putting an original radio back in it but found a Blaupunkt SD card radio/mp3 player that matched the layout of the dash. I also had a Blaupunkt amp and rear speakers installed. The amp is hidden under the seat and the speakers fit perfectly in the stock slots. There has been no modification beyond this and it appears completely stock as to preserve the concourse feel. 2008: Automatic transmission lines had a small leak from age, replaced by A&P Specialties. Noticed small leak in engine front seal. I can't stand leaks so I had him replace those seals. As engine work had been performed, it was prudent to replace the belts and rollers as well. I went ahead and had this done. 2009: Suspension felt slightly loose to me. Replaced all shocks with Bilstein HD (part number P904773) and replaced springs with Weltmeister 220 lbs to tighten things up during hard braking. Alignment was also done at this point along with all suspension bushings to be on the safe side. 2009: I liked the 4 point bosch plugs much better than the originals so I went ahead and replaced the plugs again despite the low milage. Cap, rotor, and coil all check out to be in great condition. 2010: Tires replaced with BFG Gforce Sport at 42,000 miles. Tire size switched to 225/50r-15 2010: Rare hard starting A&P Specialties replaced DME Relay. Problem appears to be solved. It had only happened about 3 times in a year so I can't be 100% sure but it hasn't happened since. Which brings me to now. I've decided on a new car to buy and simply can't afford to keep both and a motorcycle. I'm sad to see it go but know it will put a smile on it's new owner's face every time he drives it. Nothing makes quite as good a present as a Porsche! Almost forgot, included is the original document holder, manual, Haynes manual, Porsche lighter powered tire pump, and the original tool kit.
