HERE'S A REALLY NICE,ORIGINAL 1982 MERCEDES BENZ 300TD TURBO DIESEL IN REALLY GOOD SHAPE. THIS IS A GREAT DRIVER, I'VE OWNED IT ABOUT 5 YEARS SINCE THE END OF 2005 ,HAD SOME IDEA ABOUT CONVERTING IT TO A BIO-DIESEL BUT NEVER DID, I JUST LIKED THE WAY IT DROVE AS IT WAS . I AM THE THIRD OWNER, I BOUGHT IT IN COLORADO AND HE KEPT IT AT HIS BOAT YARD IN CALIFORNIA AND USED IT ONLY WHEN HE WAS THERE SAILING AS HIS GOFER CAR. I LOST MY PARKING SO I HAVE TO SELL IT. THERE ARE A COUPLE OF LITTLE NICKS IN THE DOOR JAMS FROM HIS HAULING SAILS, SAILING TACKLE AND ANCHORS AROUND IN THE BACK SEAT ,PLUS A LITTLE TEAR BUT NOTHING OF ANY NOTE. THE REAR WINDOW DECK IS ALL SUN DAMAGED AS WELL. THRE IS A PAINT NICK ON THE REAR WHEEL WELL . HE GOT IT IN 2004 FROM THE ORIGINAL OWNER WITH 147K ON IT AND HE BOUGHT THE CAR IN HOUSTON TEXAS. HE HARDLY PUT ANY MILES ON IT, SOLD HIS SAILBOAT AND THEN SOLD THE CAR TO ME. MY EXPERIENCE WITH IT HAS BEEN AS A SECOND CAR AND I NO LONGER HAVE A HOME BUT AN APARTMENT AND I LOST MY PARKING FOR SECOND CARS , I ALSO HAVE A NEWER E420, BUT I'VE HAD A FEW OF THESE DIESELS OVER THE YEARS AND ALWAYS THOUGHT THEY WERE A GREAT CLASSIC CAR, ALMOST 5000 POUNDS OF SOLID STEEL AND A BEAUTIFUL CLASSY CRUISER THAT GETS FAIRLY GOOD MILEAGE ,ALL THINGS CONSIDERED , FIGURE AROUND 28 OR SO DRIVING BRISKLY , I HAVE HEARD THAT AT 55 ON A NICE ROAD YOU WILL GET 32 BUT I DRIVE FAST SO I NEVER HAD THAT EXPERIENCE. AND FAST IS THE WORD WITH THESE CARS, THEY'RE 150 HORSE 3 LITER TURBO DIESELS AND THEY GET UP AND GO, I'M PRETTY HARD TO KEEP UP WITH IN THIS BABY, THESE THINGS HAVE A REAL POWERFUL TORQUE RANGE AND WILL PULL AWAY FROM ANYTHING AT A SURPRISING RATE AND SINCE IT'S AN OLD DIESEL IT'S REAL EASY TO STAY LEGAL, COPS DON'T EVEN NOTICE YOU. ANYWAY, THIS CAR HAS HAD SOME MECHANICAL WORK DONE TO IT RIGHT AWAY, I HAVE A BUDDY WHO TURNS A PRETTY GOOD WRENCH...WHEN I GOT IT WE PUT IN A REBUILT TRANSMISSION RIGHT AWAY, THE ORIGINAL HAD SOME SLIPPAGE IN IT AND WAS ALL OUT OF ADJUSTMENT AND WASN'T EVEN HOOKED UP TO THE TURBO CORRECTLY AND I FOUND A NICE USED ONE CHEAP. IT SHIFTS PRETTY GOOD NOW, I HAVE IT ADJUSTED FOR A NICE SMOOTH 1st 2nd SHIFT WITH A GOOD SOLID KICK DOWN ABOUT HALF PEDAL , IT CAN BE TWEEKED TO DO ALMOST ANYTHING YOU'D LIKE. MOST OF THE TIME THE T-CABLE GETS ALL STRETCHED OUT ON THESE AND THEN THE TURBO NEVER KICKS IN AT ALL OR KICKS IN ALL WRONG AND WINDS UP GETTING ALL GUMMY OR JUST STOPS WORKING AND IS A BEAR TO CLEAN OUT. NOT SO WITH THIS ONE, IT'S BEEN ALL DONE AND YOU CAN HEAR THAT TURBO HOWLING UNDER THE HOOD AND FEEL IT IN THE SEAT OF YOUR PANTS. IT MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE. I THINK THAT'S WHY I NEVER CONVERTED IT,IT JUST SOUNDS SO COOL. SO BACK TO WHAT I HAVE DONE TO THIS... I CHANGED OUT THE BRAKES COMPLETE WITH NEW ROTORS AND PADS AND E-BRAKE CABLE. I CONVERTED THE AC TO THE NEW STUFF AND IT BLOWS NICE AND COLD AND CAN BE CHARGED UP AT PEP BOYS. I PUT IN NEW HEATER CONTROL SWITCHES FROM A 300E, THE BUTTONS AND THE DIAL THAT CONTROL THE AC AND HEAT AND IT WORKS LIKE NEW. I PUT ON BRAND NEW MOTOR MOUNTS ON BOTH SIDES, BUT NOT THE ENGINE SHOCKS AND CHANGED OUT THE CONTROL ARM UPPER BUSHINGS BUT IT STILL NEEDS A BUSHING REPLACED SOMEWHERE UP THERE AT SOME TIME ,MY FRIEND SAID IT IS FINE AND NOT TO WORRY BUT I GET A SLIGHT CHUCKLE EVERY NOW AND THEN WHEN IT SHUTS DOWN. PUT ON A NEW TRANSMISSION SUPPORT AND A DRIVE SHAFT SUPPORT BEARING, FLEX JOINTS AND UNIVERSAL JOINTS AND HOLDER. PUT ON A NEW FLEX-TUBE FOR THE EXHAUST , THEY JUST CRACK UP FROM THE CONSTANT SLIGHT ROCKING OF THE ENGINE OVER THE YEARS, AND A COUPLE OF PIECES OF EXHAUST PIPE IN THE REAR WHERE IT LOOKED A LITTLE WEAK. THE STEERING BOX WAS REPLACED RIGHT BEFORE I GOT THE CAR AND THE POWER STEERING IS REAL EASY AND SMOOTH. PUT ON A NEW STEEL OIL PIPE AND JOINT FROM THE FILTER CANISTER TO THE ENGINE . I PUT ON BRAND NEW FACTORY SHOCKS ALL AROUND AND SHE SITS RIGHT UP. NEW PERRILI TIRES ALL AROUND ABOUT TWO YEARS AGO BUT THEY LOOK GREAT,HARDLY ANY MILES ON THEM. REFINISHED THE WHEELS BUT THEY STILL GET BRAKE DUST ON THEM. PUT ON A REBUILT STARTER AND AN ALTERNATOR CAUSE I HAD THEM. NEW RAD FAN COUPLER...SAME REASON, AND ALL NEW BELTS. JUST ADJUSTED ALL THE VALVES A THOUSAND MILES AGO IN THE SPRING AND REPLACED THE GASKET. LOTS OF NEW OIL AND FILTERS ALL THE TIME. I REPLACED THE PASSENGER FRONT DOOR WHERE SOMEONE BACKED INTO IT AND IT'S GOT A COUPLE OF TINY RUST SPOTS ON THE INSIDE WHERE THE HOLES ARE FOR THE UNDERCOATING, BEING A CHICAGO DOOR, BUT IT SEEMS LIKE AN EASY FIX. ALSO THE DARN THING HAS A RATTLE IN THE INSIDE WHEN YOU SLAM IT. THAT SUMS UP PRETTY MUCH ALL THE STUFF I HAVE DONE WITH THIS...NOW HERE'S WHAT YOU'LL NEED TO STAY ON TOP OF IT.... SUN ROOF OPENS BUT IS A LITTLE STICKY, NEEDS A LITTLE HELP CLOSING IT. THE TACHOMETER DOESN'T WORK,NEEDS A NEW CABLE BUT REALLY, WHY WOULD THIS ENGINE EVEN HAVE A TACH? CAN'T OVER REV A DIESEL ANYWAY. I NEVER BOTHERED. THE HOOD RELEASE IS OUT OF ADJUSTMENT WHEN IT POPS OUT OF THE GRILL AND YOU'LL NEED TO REACH IN AND GRAB IT WITH TWO FINGERS. FRONT CARPETS ARE OLD AND A BIT TATTY FROM ALMOST 30 YEARS OF USE, FIND SOME NEW ONES AND POP THEM IN. I'VE GOT SOME RED ONES OVER THE ORIGINALS AND ALSO SOME RUBBER MATS, BUT NEW FULL,FACTORY CARPETS ARE REALLY NICE TO HAVE. DRIVERS SIDE REAR WINDOW MOTOR MAKES NOISE. IF YOU USE IT THEN REPLACE IT, I JUST NEVER GOT TO IT CAUSE I USE THE AC AND NO ONE SITS BACK THERE. THESE THINGS ALL HAVE A LITTLE OIL SEEPAGE UNDERNEATH FROM VARIOUS SEALS ,PIPES,TUBING AND HOSES AND WHATNOT ,MAYBE IT'LL BUG YOU, MAYBE NOT BUT DEAL WITH IT IF YOU WANT. BUT IT DOESN'T LEAK AND LEAVE A MESS HOWEVER AND I JUST FIGURED THE SEEPAGE TO BE NORMAL. YOU MIGHT WANT TO RUN A TRACE ON THOSE VACUME LINES, THE AIR RUNS OUT PRETTY QUICK WHEN YOU SHUT HER DOWN AND THE LOCKS ONLY GO DOWN PARTIALLY AFTER YOU SHUT IT DOWN, I LOCK IT WITH THE MOTOR RUNNING,THEN I SHUT IT DOWN,WAIT A MINUTE AND GET OUT WITHOUT THE LOCKS POPPING UP. FORGET ABOUT THEM UN-LOCKING, AS FOR ME, I COULD CARE LESS. AT SOME POINT YOU ARE GOING TO CHANGE THE REAR AXLES OR AT THE MINIMUM THE RUBBER BOOTS , THEY'RE OK NOW BUT AFTER THIS MANY YEARS THAT GREASE IS GETTING OLD AND THEY DON'T LAST FOREVER THE GLOVE BOX DOESN'T LOCK ANYMORE. TINY LITTLE CRACK ON THE DASH FROM ALL THOSE TEXAS SUMMERS. THE BODY IS NICE AND CLEAN WITH MOST OF THE ORIGINAL MERCEDES BLACK CRACKLE UNDERCOAT STILL IN PLACE AND THE ORIGINAL STAINLESS STEEL REAL EXHAUST STILL WITH THE BLACK COATING ON IT. THE PAINT LOOKS CLEAR AND CLEAN AND IS ORIGINAL, IT MUST HAVE BEEN GARAGE KEPT CAUSE THERE IS NO SUN DAMAGE OR PEELING CLEAR COAT AND THE PAINT IS BRIGHT AND SHINY AS IS THE CHROME. I HAVE THE ORIGINAL BOOKS ALL STAMPED BY THE TEXAS DEALER SO I KNOW THE ORIGINAL OWNER TOOK CAR OF THIS CAR FOR 20 YEARS. please read the following fine print stuff! On Nov-18-10 at 09:16:35 PST, seller added the following information: I should mention that this does have a nice Blaupunct Stereo AM/FM CD player with a removable face plate.It's hooked up to the factory speakers, you might want to change that, and has about 15 watts of power, or is it 25? When I installed it I kind of by-passed the front and rear speaker control, which then just popped out and self destructed and now it just works on all four speakers all the time. Oh well.... If I think of anything else I will mention it down here from time to time.
